What's up!
I'm a sophomore in HS. I'd like to be an animator or storyboard artist someday. I also dig character design. I have no formal training (I'm Rob Liefeld!). So I'm pretty much self taught, but I'd like to go to college and have someone...teach me stuff.
Anyway, this is my second sketchbook. Here's a link to my first one because contrast creates interest.

ihatemexies: Thanks for the support!
Rotor: I rushed through the figure sketches since it's hard to really study a rough sketch anyway, especially with all the strokes.
Mr. Juicy: Thanks. I do some imagination stuff but I'm trying to focus more on studies and observations from life because a lot of animation schools are stressing those things (not the studies, but definitely observations and life drawings). And when designing characters Chen Yi Chang says its best to research and ref your topic because otherwise you just end up drawing the stereotypes in your head. Drawing from imagination is important (and I'm practicing them after my studies to apply what I've learned) but it's not a big priority right now.

Equality72521: I used to hate studying anatomy (check out my old sketchbook for studies that reek of epic fail), but I think I've matured over the past couple months and I've begun to be more patient. That's when anatomy started becoming fun. And it helps with figure stuff!

Nice mass studies! I wish I had started taking art seriously when I was still in high school.
The face and hands on the first characterdesign.com sketch seem pretty off, although the sense of volume on the rest of the body is really good. Faces are something that I'm currently struggling with as well, so good to know I'm not alone.
I think the big problem is that line defining the lower jaw - the angle of the line pushes the rest of the face up and make it look really squashed.
That's about all I have right now, I hope this helps.

gmc9987: I'm taking drawing seriously because I want to get into a good animation college after I graduate. I have the cliche Calarts/Ringling dreams but I wouldn't mind attending San Jose State University. It's relatively cheap and a lot of alumni work at Pixar and Dreamworks.
As for the face in the first characterdesign drawing, yeah it's is pretty yuck. I don't know why I posted it.
Fighting Seraph: My mannequin sucks though. There's no articulation (but I heard all mannequins are like that). I read somewhere that buying a cheap, flexible Spider-man action figure is better than an art mannequin.

Your drawings are very gestural and alive. You should focus on 3d forms now since your drawings are flat in some areas. Try to get your hands on more of vilppu's basic drawing videos where he explains the whole procedure if you can.
You also need to be more careful with your drawings. Make sure things are in correct proportions and that they align correctly both horizontally and vertically. Don't be sloppy on important parts like hands and feet since this really take away from your drawings. I'm looking forward for more.

Thanks. I see what you mean about things aligning. I had my paper tilted a bit. I'm glad you think my drawings feel alive though. I've been trying to capture that since getting Mattessi's book.
Anyway, trying to practice 3d form (and might as well tackle rendering along the way) with a still life.

I shouldn't do these so late at night. I get sleepy, and it shows.

In practicing three-dimentional space, make sure your objects are really layed out nicely before going into the rendering. I can't really tell if the jar in the back is square or cylindrical. It's reading squareish, so I'm pretty sure that's what it is.
With your cylindrical objects (Morton salt), try to remember that the top and bottom are ovals when you view them in perspective. They are getting kind of a sharp corner on the right and left sides. Try to smooth that out and it will look better.
And then, once you go into the rendering make sure you follow the shape with your lines. In the Morton salt container, I see a lot of stray lines, just forming a tone (black), whereas you could be using them to also show volume. If you follow the form, making your shading wrap around your objects as a sort of half oval, it will display a more 3D cylinder.
As an example you can imagine (or grab) some lined paper, and roll it into a cylinder. Now if you tilt one of the ends towards you, the lines will follow the shape. Try to replicate that in your drawings and it will describe the forms much more. I hope this all helps...
Great dedication here. You're drawing so much, and your work is showing a lot of progress. Keep it up! :D

In addition to what Foolsauce said, I suggest you to get a book where they explain how to draw ellipses and cylinders correctly in perspective. Successful drawing from Loomis is a great place to start. Scott Robertson's basic perspective form drawing is very good too. Keep practicing!

hey gump. i remember your perspective and ellipses studies in your old thread and i know you understand your stuff. it mightve been a case of WHEn you did your still life than how. you mentioneed doing it late at night which might have prompted you to rush it and thus make some easy to make errors. still life are uncomfortable so next time try doing it a time that wont make it so.
hope this helps.

forgeman: Thanks. I'm glad you like the improvement. And by reference lines do you mean like a sketchy underdrawing? Since I do that, but I guess they don't show up when I scan it (they're really light, and I already drew on top of them anyway).
SixPrism: I have a PDF of Richard William's book, but I want to draw properly first before I tackle animation. I just do a couple of squash and stretch flip books now and then. As for the other book, I might check it out, but t3h mon3y$$ is short for me.

Well I like to save paper with studies :bashful: and a lot of the Bridgman drawings are pretty small anyway so I just do put a bunch of 'em in one page. My figure drawings are much bigger.
Thanks for the advice, by the way.

Some quick gestures and small caricatures from TV. Probably 1-2 second sketches and filling gaps from memory. They're nothing special, but I thought it was good practice for movement and character.

Well there aren't any hands in the first 50+ pages or so of Bridgman, so it's not like I'm avoiding them. Anyway, you made me realize it would be too long until I get to the part in the book that deals with hands so I decided to do some life studies myself.

i love the bright colors on the brit soldier but it doesnt read as well as the pirate ones. watch out for tangents, but i bet you already knew that. it's a good design though. i love his stone-faced expression

Thanks! I love Genndy Tartakovsky, which is where the graphic flatness comes from. And the soldier could be clearer, but in my defense, the ref I used had some clarity issues too. But no excuses!

Thanks. I don't really aim for realism or classical stuff in my original designs which is why they don't seem to carry over. They're mostly to learn anatomy so I can make my life studies more accurate. My designs are more cartoony rather than video game concepty.

Your line becomes more confident, be careful with the proportions though.
Keep on the studies to analyze arms or legs but keep practicing whole figures too, to understand how the entire stuff works! Nothing more to say, good job! :)

Definitely an improvement since you started the SB. I like your studies (post #91), I think they're very important and obviously help. Parts of your stylizations work nicely (the lady in black's thighs and torso, for example), and some are still a little rough, probably from lack of anatomy practice.
You're definitely improving, though. Keep it up!

Great word for your age. I also admire your work ethic, you are doing a lot of studies and devoting a lot of time to them.... That will pay off big in the long run.

Your still lifes (specifically ellipses) are improving.
Remember, ellipses NEVER have pointy edges. Also, Ellipses get wider (closer to being a circle) as you look down on an object.
So for example, when you're drawing something like a coffee can, and you're looking down at it, the cap (top part) will be a narrower ellipse compared to the base of the coffee can. But only slightly. Unless it's in a very extreme perspective.
Perspective is tough.
Kapil

JohnID: Perspective is a bitch, preach it brother! That coffee can is a relatively old drawing, I already know the mistakes I made (it's pretty terrible). But I changed viewpoints inadvertently so that led to the screwy perspective. Hopefully, I've learned since then.
Kapil: I feel bad, I haven't done anatomy studies for almost a week now. I've been really busy lately. But don't worry--it's all drawing related!

The only reason i crit you is because you look like you actually will use it.
I can't help it but i go to the hands in every drawing... Maybe take a moment to look at your hand and twist it, turn it, look at it from different angles... just absorb how it changes shape when you push against the desk or hold a pencil... the hand is a fascinating puzzle to draw and once you crack it you'll be happy you spent that much time. Some things i was told:
The distance from the wrist to the first knuckle is roughly twice the distance from the first knuckle to the second knuckle... and that distance is roughly half the distance between the second knuckle and the third. And the final bone of the finger is slightly longer than half the bone it's connected to. Do you see? that helps when you are drawing them. I think Andrew Loomis even says this (maybe)
See with the drawing books it's not enough to just copy them... you also have to think "what is he trying to tell me about how the body works with this drawing?" Whenever you look at the nude figure you're asking exactly the same question except "he" is now "nature".
I also see you still falling into the trap of drawing the symbol for "eye" instead of drawing what's really there. If you find a way to not do this tell me how ;)
keep up the good work! I look forward to seeing what you do in the future.

i love the clear fluid shapes with the dog gestures. CA is full of video game monsters and orcs, one forgets about appeal in simplicity. those dog gestures are cute stuff.
and speaking of appeal (somethign youve no doubt heard as an aspiring animator), this drawing has a ton of it:

it exudes elegance and fluidity. the expression on the face is really natural.

I really like your sense of shadow (especially in some of those hand studies). and with those stylized figures, I can really imagine them animated. in fact, they're going on a little reel in my head right now.
even in some of your stylized images though, keep an eye on proportions
for example, in this one (http://img55.imageshack.us/img55/6438/191dz3.jpg) the leg on the right looks like it's stretched back too far (compare the levels of the right and left foot. looks like the right needs bringing forward a bit to make sense of it)

great head start your getting for your self dude doing this shit in high school. your absorbing all those studies really well, its translating to those still life drawings your doing. Your starting to understand how to create forms from value, the progression is pretty visible from your early life studies to your current. I would say find time to do more life human studies, as much as you can, I would research and see if any life study classes are available to you at your local Jr. college. Keep at it man seriously, Good work dude.

hi man, good stuff in here, you made some improvement with these hands from life, I noticed that your studies from art books looking much better than your characters or figures from ref. you drew , that means you make copies without truly understanding of the form and how it should change depending of the pose, when you draw from imagination you hardly trying to express the muscles, look at some person outside and see are the muscles expressed so hardly? you know there are many muscles under the skin, but you can't see them, when you watching some bodybuilding competition you can see how these guys are oiled to can all the muscles pop-up but without this oil?(dunno whit what exactly they are oiled) they aren't so hardly expressed.it's good to study all the human body anatomy to remember where and how the muscles are placed under the skin and then to trying with stylized characters drawing, really like your drawings from life! sorry for the pain, just keep drawing hard and focus on the construction of the head and the body ;)

HTML rulez d00d: Thanks. I'm glad and thankful I got a Gold Key. Hard work pays off!
lilnebo: Thanks. Looking back at my previous sketchbook (even before this one) I feel I've made a lot of improvement. It's only been about 9 months since I decided to take drawing seriously (studies, still lifes, etc). There's still a long way to go though.

Wow--lots of great stuff here. The headphones and hand studies are particularly strong. The sps are great, too, but they look a hair on the static side. Were they referenced from photos? As an exercise, you could try another sp (from a mirror if you weren't using one before) and force yourself to work on all areas of the drawing at the same time, building up values throughout simultaneously. That might make the whole thing a bit more vibrant and cohesive... Great work and looking forward to future updates!

You've got something good goin' on. Obviously you pay attention to detail. I'm no superstar, but if I may make a suggestion. Keep looking everywhere, do more studies from life (anything). You can only go so far making two dimensional representations from other two dimensional images. Just passing on some sound advice. Nice work!

Thanks dude! CSSSA (California State Summer School of the Arts) is a 1 month animation program for high schoolers at Calarts. Supposedly, it's difficult to get into and previous alumni include Craig Mcracken (Powerpuff Girls) and a bunch of Pixar staff including Bobby Podesta and Shane Prigmore (Coraline animator).
