Hi everyone,
I finally decided to create my own sketchbook.
I'm 19 years old, live in Belgium and study Digital Arts and Entertainment, I'm in my second year now.
I'm hoping to get a lot better :p
See my recent work at the last page :)

Hmm...it looks like you're just taking the concept of "pod racing" from Star Wars and calling it something else...
As far as everything else goes...study anatomy and do some figure drawing.
posemaniacs.com is a great resource for quick gestural practice.

@DeeLock: It was a school assignment to design your own podracer, so it had to look like one :p
Here are some of my latest sketches.
The 3 to the left are from photo reference. The 2 in the upper right are from wolverine origins, the one with the sketch markers is from 7brothers. The other 2 I did on the train.

Shen Yi is the Chinese sun god who shot nine of the ten suns when they were burning the earth. Shen Yi became the lord of the tenth sun. He received a draught of immortality from the goddess Xi Wang-mu.
This was made for a painting competition at school, take an existing god and turn it into a robot.
Turned out I got the most votes :d

Here's a robot I had to draw for a school project along with the sketches needed to get to the final design.
It had be some sort of cute stealth bot, with al lot of round forms.

I really like those robot designs. Pretty cool stuff here.
Are those headphones all 3d or is it a paintover? Looks sick!

Nice progress! The stealth bot is probably one of my favourites from you! :) Good to see a whole spread with orthos and a posed version!
Your faces, even the cartoony ones, could benefit from some studies. If you do Bridgman, Mentler, Loomis, Hogarth or whomever, it'll translate to your cartoony stuff as well :)

Here's my latest painting. Done for a painting competition at school, the subject was design a Renegade and his/her space bike.
The bike design was the hardest part for me.
I used self made brushes to try to quickly add detail and texture to a painting.

Your work is quite nice, I like the image in post # 24. But I feel that you need still quite a bit of work in anatomy , proportions and perspective/foreshortening. These are just some very basic and important things you have to get down before an image can be mind-blowingly awesome. Some colours could be less satureated as well.

March 29th, 2009, 06:09 PM
Nice variety of stuff you have here!
Great bike and headphones, the stealth robot is looking good too. I'll second Janos about the anatomy and all that stuff. Also, the face features look too flat sometimes, make some studies of those.
Oh and I like the mask of that superhero, makes me think of the movie Nacho Libre :)
Just keep at it, progress will come, slowly but surely!

Thanks for the comments :)
I'm doing some studies for reference, and I'll be posting them soon.
Here a work I did a wile ago, for yet another a painting competition at school.
Its my remake of the fairytale 'De 3 Rovers' (The 3 Bandits). I Don't thinks it's know outside Belgium, even in Belgium its quite unknown. It was one of my favourite fairy tales when I was a young boy.
My painting tries to represent the scene in which the orphan girl ask the bandits what what they are planning to do with their treasures. This is the moment in the story where the bandits who where the criminals become the good guys. In the original story the bandits where equipped with a red axe, a gun and bellows with pepper and black capes, the orphan children got the same red capes.
PieterV
April 16th, 2009, 09:08 AM
Hi Hanne,
Last piece lacks some depth to the composition, you need to seperate the elements more using value. For example have the girl brightest the bandits a bit darker, the background darkest and the sky a little lighter.
A good way to check your composition is to view it a thumbnail size, if it reads at that size, it will read good when it's full size. I you do that you'll see the girl stands out but that the rest all blends together visually. You need to organize your values so it reads as good as possible.
You could probably exagerate the lighting on the girl more so the piece becomes more cinematic in nature.
Also think of contrasts, the place where the lightest lights meet with the darkest darks will naturally become the focal point, the effect drops as contrast becomes lower.
Hope the competition went/goes well :)

I agree with what Rubbadub has said, if you could lighten up the forest in the background a little it would push it back a bit and give the whole thing more depth and make the characters in the foreground pop forward a bit more.
Good work in this sb, its cool to see the process you followed to arrive at the final pieces of work, the thumbnails are cool too. Nice 3D work too, i have those headphones :D

Yo! Nice sketchbook so far! I think you need to work more on your anatomy and colors. Study that and draw a lot from life, doing self-portraits helps a lot . Also when constructing the body and face, well everything really, it helps to lay down some basic shapes first to get the proportions right and then build upon that. I like your concepts and designs, keep it up!

May 4th, 2009, 05:14 AM
Yeah keep up studying.Dont use some non-important line when sketching some characters. For example in these last studies i see some lines in the female body that distracts me from the beauty of it.Keep it clean and study its form so i guess you can live the hatching for later.
Keep studying and by understanding the forms you will also make a better rendering.
See ya and thnx for visiting my sketchbook :D

cool work so far. I really like your design products on the last page and all the thumbs you do!
faces are getting better, I'd recommend loomis though, to get a better idea of the planes you have in a face. the proportions still seem a bit distorted here and there.
keep working on it!

Nice work, I like your "cartoony" style and especially like the digital stuff, it looks really "worked through". I think I see a trend in your sketches from cartoon to the more realistic, thats probably not a bad thing.

danggg man im really digging that design work .. do you work with many paints in traditional mediums ?
i'd love to see some of that too , i think some of your sketches could use a looser feeling it seems a lot of the lines are pretty harsh

Hey man, you're very good. Congratulations for choosing your career. You have great variety in you work, I'll recommend you to practice hard the figure, perhaps more than all the rest, as most drawings usually have at least one guy there, and it's the only thing that remains always pretty much the same.
Cheers!

Thanks for all the comments :D
Here are some new sketches I made and 2 selfportraits, I like the 2de the most.
For the selfportraits I spend a lot of time (too much time) to get the lines correct.
@Zorcron: except for the lines I don't work traditional, I'm hoping to pick that up sometime (but I'm afraid i'm not patient enough :P). They only teach us photoshop at school, and I don't have much time for free work.

Here are my latest sketches. I want to be able to draw nice heads and poses totally from imagination.
The heads are mostly done from imagination, they all seem to have the same error, but I can't figure out what it is.
The poses are done from photo reference. I aint practicing anatomy now, first I wanna be able to draw dynamic and believable poses.
Grafguy
July 24th, 2009, 07:02 AM
first anatomy then poses ;)
as for the heads, draw some from ref and make some loomis plane like studies
and use some variation in line wieght, all your lines look the same and that make a drawing less interesting
keep up the good work m8 ;)

how bout I do? :D
its just that i think you first have to understand (a littlebit) what your drawing.
Doin just poses is fine, and it will help you but, if you do the anatomy first a bit and then go to the poses, ull have a better view of whats happening and understanding of what your drawing.
But hey, that's just how I roll :)
edit: yey i started page 3 ^^

I agree with Grafguy, and I also think it would help you to try more traditional, realistic portraits of pretty graceful girls (you have a strong line that is very charateristic but you can always use knowing how to be more gentle!) but that aside, wow.
Your 3D skills are awesome, and your 2D cartoonish style is also very original and funny.
You have a sense of brilliant color that shows in your second self portrait (no wonder you chose it for your icon!), this is definitely a sketchbook to subscribe to!

I gues i don't agree with this... poses are not about anatomy, they are more about movement, gesture and story. anatomy will defenatly complement it, but there is no need to know anatomy for doing good poses. It wil only make your darwing look more realistic... thats just how i aproach it :)

Love, love, love your concepts from post #66. Nice graphic/GUI work there, too :)
I would only suggest softening your strokes on face painting, it comes off a little artificial-looking. Unless hard-edged look is what you're going for, of course :) (still, the hard-edged look is great for showing your form understanding, in my opinion ;))

good to see all the studies!
I think you should address the gesture/structure of the figures and portraits before focusing on the features and contours. The details on George W. look good, and the colors/values are similar but the actual likeness is off. Perhaps locating different key points on the face (eye sockets, cheek bones, etc.) and then comparing their connections with those in the original painting before addressing more specific details.
Keep it up.

cool stuff, looks like you really stepped things up with that video game project and really worked on your creative process. one thing that you could try with the faces might be to run some photos through filter like cutout(under filter gallery) or posterize(under adjustments) and take a look at some of the value shapes.
Some more figures and enviros couldnt hurt either. Kchens notes on figure drawing are my favorite http://analyticalfiguresp08.blogspot.com/search?updated-max=2008-03-07T19:52:00-08:00&max-results=7 .
For the head spheres here http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=927354&stc=1&d=1268321610 you can get a normal line that projects out of the surface by passing a line through the center of the circle and through a point on the surface marked by the ellipse.
on a side note http://attachments.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=650694&stc=1&d=1240170197 I recognized the figure from the bottom middle, did a study of it a while ago, just found that amusing.

Cool environments. Do alot of photostudies from terragalleria (http://www.terragalleria.com/) so you get more confident with them. You will get a sense for the values. For the faces and figures I would suggest to get some more construction going on. Use simple forms for the body. Have a look at Kevin Chen's tutorials here (http://analyticalfiguresp08.blogspot.com/). For the faces I can recommend Bridgman's method of simplifying the head in different forms (http://img685.imageshack.us/img685/3798/faceug.jpg).
Hope this helps :) and good luck :).

Nice studies mate! Your faces have improved a lot! Although I think the eyes tend to be too big. There are a lot of great resources for learning the anatomy of the human head. I would strongly recommend taking a look at some :) Your pose studies look awesome! Keep doing them!

I entered the comiccon challange :)
I'm aiming for a 20years old magneto kid, I gonna situate him in the 50s.
For the helmet I was thinking to do a helmet smashed tot pieces that are held together by his powers. Ore floating pieces of metal riped from the ground, floating around is head, making his helmet.

dude, cool stuff.
But u don't seem to be progressing as you should!
the portraits, are those from live/photos?
If so, your just drawing what you think you see and not waht is actually there.
Try to forget what you know (how an eye looks, what lips look like etc.)
and focus on lines and planes, build up your portrait with geometrical shapes.
At first you won't see the use of it, but as you progress with the drawing you will see the face coming out of it!
hope this helps :)
cheers and work harder!
