Hi guys,

I've finally decided to start a sketchbook. With all the inspiring work I see on this forum it's hard to not want to improve. I want to practice regularly to develop my drawings and will hopefully be updating this thread weekly. Any crits would be much appreciated!

Nice drawings, the buildings are my favourite :)

I can tell youre struggling with your ellipses on the car tyres though, heres a tip, draw a line for the axels of the cars first then draw a line where you want the tyre/ellipse to be at right angles to the axel and draw your ellipse on those axsi. hard to explain it in text, its explained more detailed and with drawings here: http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=117049

keep up the good work!

Hoho! Great start man! Those buildings look good, like, really good :) Keep posting! And do color studies from life. That helps more than just looking at photos :)

hey thanks for the kind words in my SB :)
good studies in here, you seem to know what to do to improve :)
the line quality will improve on its own with practice and time, so thats just about keeping the pencil moving. You should keep doing TONS of those posemaniacs, they're pretty good for getting warmed up before a session, but they must be done on with some anatomy studies to make sure you know what shapes to look for while you draw them :)
Make sure you grab your copy of a Loomis/Hogart/Bridgman book, they're pure gold.
About the enviroments, i'm no big expert myself, but i suggest you do reffed pure color studies, without lines, together with you perspective ones, mixing the two things together should come on its own :)

keep it up man, doing great :)

ciao!

that study of the Capitol's got one of the best color schemes I've seen in a while, and I like the distorted perspective. Great cars! Keep posting.

TheGnoll: Thanks for popping by! Yeah I've got the books and indeed pure gold, I'm trying to focus on gesture and basic anatomy at the minute so I can draw more figures from mind, but I'll definitely get back into doing some anatomy. I've attempted what you suggested for the color studies today and it's damn hard! lol, but hey practice makes perfect right?

TASmith: Thank you!

I've only been doing digital practice recently so I thought I may as well put my older things up, plus this sketchbook thread is also part of my college hand in so I guess it makes sense to put it all up.

Feedback on Digital Painting would be very helpful, I'm struggling with getting this to look right in painter. :nohope:

The Christmas bells have great volume. I think if you made your highlights brighter in the castles, the forms would look more 3D.

Hi again, got some tips for the environment/colour/value studies: one thing that really helped me was this: "paint what you see not what you think you see"... I know it might sound stupid and obvious but it helped me. reading up on some colour theorey might help, and when youre doing these studies dont worry too much about getting the shapes and that accurate just focus on your colour and value. Another useful trick is when youre using the colour picker (not sure if its the same in painter as it is in ps...im using ps) first look at the values and try and get that right by eye and then trace across to the pick the right saturation/colour.

Oh, and at the end it really helps to use the colour picker on the photo and then on your study to compare your choice and what the really colour is, that way you correct yourself and you learn faster. as opposed to just leaving it at the end and starting a new one instead of evaluating how you did.

keep working :)

eminkey2000: Thanks for the tip, I generally never revisit sketches but I'll keep it in mind for future pieces.

renew: Thanks for the advice, I like your environment doodles, most impressive especially considering how little time you take! I generally try not to use the color picker (Corel Painter) but it makes sense to use it to compare in the end, I think I'll do that in future because the studies I do are generally way off in color. As for using little line work, I'm trying that as well, thanks again! :)

Hi Guys, these are the best bits from this weeks work :rendered:

As you can see I'm really struggling with the digital stuff, the line work is not a problem for me, but I would be thankful for any crits on the rendering /lighting process.

Thanks

holy crap man you've been busy.
Excellent work again, at this stage not talking about the quality but the effort and thats what counts really, if you keep tackling your weakness with this dedication, you'll reach pro level in no time.Just in case you needed even more motivation, check out Bobby Chiu's podcasts, i always find them great to listen to while sketching.

keep going, it's all mileage once you understand what you have to do and actually DO it hehe (and kudos for that)

ciao!
