Ended up looking like a cousin of the puffer-fish with a really bad underbite. :D

i think i can call that one of my better pieces, because i personally like the atmosphere that comes with it.i wanted it to look a bit like through a fish's eye, therefore the bigger eye and teeth.

I tryed to paint over a small area, it takes me alot of time to do with my mouse. Usually I just put some color to my pencil work, which ends up a bit cartoonish. Anyway I'd appreciate tip & comments..

Nice one PoX :)

I'm really happy with this topic, I LOVE deep-sea creatures! Perhaps I'll post another before the day is out. This took me about an hour in PSP.

Here's mine...for now...it's not finished...I'm too lazy to go on for today...al those distractions here...really annoying.

Well...did it in corel painter 8 after I scanned a pencil sketch....I like the shield.:D

http://www.xs4all.nl/~rfriet/peppo/images/peppo_turtlefish.jpg

Maybe it's a bit too teenage mutant turtley....but that was accidentaly done....I just liked the shells...so I decided to make it completly turtley....but....it's not even finished...ack!
Wee..look at me babbling.....yadda yadda yadda....good night.....

Edit: dont mind the bad detailing....it's done in a smaller size...so just step a little back from your monitor until it looks good......

great work people!

It seems I always paint the things I know how to paint, and by this, never getting better :( Stupid... cause I forgot that the dsg isn't for impressing, but for getting better. So I choose to do a piece that would make me sh*t my pants and think painting would be a waist of time. Much inspired by mr. mullins pirat ships (though ofcause shamefull in comparison). enjoy!

scumworks-looks great!.....nice waves...but why did you choose to do it grayscale?...

Edit: And one more question...that vague shape behind on the left...is that some guy wielding an axe? strange if it's on the open sea.....

Thanks mad! The boat was suppose to indicate them being vikings, guess not :p. I choose b/w cause I wanted to get better at choosing values etc. (pretty confused on the value vs hue vs sat thing...)

cheers :chug:

Scumworks- I really enjoy your work and how loose you seem to keep your style. I really enjoy this one because water (especially churning water and waves) are soo hard to accomplish and make it look like it has so much movement. I really think this came across. I saw the boat and the men right away.. reminds me of 20,000 leagues under the sea in a little offshoot way. Very well done.

Sapphire- Sooo pretty! I love how you got it to look opaque without streakiness. Even with the blur tool in photoshop that is still one of my noob weaknesses.

Mog and Pox I think captured the essence of why I am still afraid to swim in the ocean. Very nice!

BGermain- Utterly impressive, as all of your work I have seen has been.

In the great depths of the Hadopelagic ocean, beings thrive unseen by human eyes. The undisputed lord of this domain is the Abyssal Merman. Cunning and intelligent, their deep sea colonies thrive around the hydrothermal vents of the ocean floor.

http://www3.telus.net/badddspellah/Stuff/Deepsea%20Mermaid.jpg

bgermain --> sexy... yet not sexy. I like your take on the traditional mermaid! She seems near the surface of the water so some interplay of the refraction of light on her lit surfaces could do some nice things to really situate her in the scene.

al-x --> well thought out little critter!

Crave My Nightmares --> hey, tell you're fish to stop staring at me, he's giving me the creeps.

Sapphire --> ah see, as soon as I finished my beastie I thought, "I should've riffed on a jellyfish, that's be fun to paint." Nice work, some nice crisp white highlights would really make the forms of your creature stand out.

Mad Giraffe --> The shell is a nifty idea but where's its face? ps. After watching 'Master and Commander' I learned that axes are indispensible on the open sea for: cutting ropes and rigging, chopping wood, fighting enemy ships, etc.

scumworks --> Nice idea, it almost reminds me of a Turner painting how loose you've kept everything.

Jeano --> Boing! Wicked, scary and trippy-looking. Bravo.

carnifex, its nice to get commented on dsg. but dont be doing it for the comments or praise. i see dsg as a way of learning how to draw/paint. sometimes i feel like learning something and today i didnt. besides that, commenting everyone is hard. you cant always know when a person is working hard or posting his afternoon doodle. you might try the #art on irc if you want comments.

and now my comment for you: keep up, keep going :) i would like to see some more detail in it. you have the basic forms ready, so move to the detail. keeping it grayscale helps alot.

Cool work everyone.

Bob Loblaw - wow. I like how achieved that incandescent quality. All-in-all, the creature is very spooky. Great Work.

Jeano - the colors are really intense. Very nice work.

PoX - Cool and tranquil. I admire the form and texture you achieved with this piece.

Pox - I really like the lighting in your piece.

Bod - I like all of your DSGs. They are all well textured and always very original.

About a half hour-forty-five minutes while waiting for some RTV to dry. No thumbnails or anything this time. Left some of the basic quick sketch in too.

sushi!

vfxartist: I really like the creat itself, the translucent effects r nice. But the noised up bg makes it look like its in space??:p

Shambacca: Your pieces are always brooding and atmospheric, but b careful not to lose the definitiopn in your primary forms.

Sapphire: Nice revision and good use of reflections of the rainbow colours.

DraigAthar: Very leviathin

Elekon: Keep it up, try to center your form on the canvas, its hanging off the edge atm.

Hunger: Ghostly!

Jebus: Egyptian influence...maybe atlantean?

Bob Loblaw: Nice weighting. A lot bulkier than most sea creature pieces-it looks like a real hardass!

Jeano; Nice! I like

Scumworks: Im trying to work on the value scale as well. Yours looks very pastelly, perhaps not quite enough contrast?? I got that they were vikings tho :D

Mad Giraffe: I like where its going. The tail is misproportionately weighted at the bottom, but yeh i like the shield too!

Mog: Looks like the start of an awesome paintover

NBT: Cute haha

Pox Thats nice...it reminds me of something did u use ref?

Carnifex: Nice atmos...a bit cartoonish, but in a good way.

Crave: Awwww look at the cute little....aAaAAAARGH! HES BITING MY HAND OFFF!!!! I like him.

Al-x: I like it. Oil pastels?

Bgermain: Bloody nice work. Good job.

Nothing for me today im switching my hosting to liquenox... so ill post up in the next dsg. peace out all

Heh. Yep, only every image of a really deep sea critter I've seen, some nutjob ends up stirring up a bunch of silt and stuff from the ground, or there's just a ton of stuff floating around. Looked more like space to me without it!

Thanks for the comments/crits.

rev: I really like the creatures design, maybe build up more light/shadow to make it less flat.

mog: Looks like you were thinking along the same lines as me.

Jeano: Nice and freaky, maybe try to limit the number of colours,

Bob: Original design, nice texture.

form_n_focus: Thanks, no reference was used. I guess its inspired by a combination of dragon, catfish and those old classic sea beasts that sink ships.

moops: High impact pic, nice painty feel.

of course i know the general purpose of the dsg is to sketch as often and fast as possible,i just got a bit angry after seeing two guys comment on about every piece posted, except for mine.b/c of lack of sleep i guess i overreacted a bit too.nevermind.

schlo-mo,don't roll your eyes:p

edit: oh,and i kept my piece that simple because so deep under whater there's not so much more to see of a creature like that.and i don't say this b/c i'm lazy;)

Number 28... went with a bit more whimsical than usual, but still with some edge :) Its been a while since I have done something monochromatic, so i fuigured this one would be perfect for that (underwater atmoshphere).

at this rate, I may get caught up by next year! hehe
