Hello CA.org!

I firstly want to say thats the work on this forum is exceptional, really inspiring work here.

Secondly, I have come to the realization that I need to be a lot better if I am going to make it as a concept artist, so I am going back to basics and hopefully become excited and more confident about my work.

Here is my lil mission, going to work really hard and concentrate to become a better artist, as this is the only thing I truly enjoy, I need to get better at my art!!!!!! its so frustrating being crap

So please help me by leaving comments and crits so that I may learn and improve.

Without further a do, here is todays lil dump of sketches

Thanks for the reply in my sb, good stuff here, good luck and dont give up! One thing about your sketches, try and get some darker values in too, use a softer pencil at the end and just bring out some details with darker greys.

Kerbox
November 21st, 2008, 07:47 AM
Your lips are very nice! But I think the eyes might be misplaces on Mila, maybe the right one is too far back? Still pretty awesome tho! Full steam ahead I'd say ;-)

November 21st, 2008, 07:50 AM
Hi! nice work - I agree with renew about darker values (and highlights, too!) push those tones! If you do that, then it should start to correct my other crit - outlining. Outlines are great in initial sketches and more graphic or cartoony styles - but if you're going for a more realistic approach you may learn more by using only shades and tonal variations to define shapes. Just a thought:) Keep it up!

Renew: yeh no worries, i will be leave a comment as often as i can :)
I actually dont have any softer pencils atm ha ha so i really need to get some, cos they are looking a lil flat in volume arnt they

Kerbox: cheers! Milla has some issues, maybe i will revist it and try again with her proportions.

Sinneart Thank you for the helpful comments, I will take them on board and carry on.

cheers all! much appreciated

Hey I like the way you seem to take on your paintings from now on, from sketch over thumbnail to the final workout. This creature is sick ... you know sick like looking ill ;)

donalfall
December 16th, 2008, 09:39 AM
Hey mate, great sketchwork, particularly when you use reference. There's a face up there from Nov 22nd. that looks a bit like Kabuki or something similar that rocks. The early sketch of a girl biting her lip is nice too, it has good volume. But when you drop the ref, it looks really obvious.

Like on The Butcher - her face seems really unfinished, especially seeing as you did a good job on her arms and ribcage. And theres something weird going on around her groin area. I'm not sure if either her belly button is too low or her crotch is too high, but it makes it seem distorded and small. Good execution (heh heh) of the challenge though, good idea. You obviously have a load of good ideas though, cos the monster is cool as well, very convincing.

Practise your anatomy, but keep the imagination going. ;)

azekariel: Thank you very much :)

skorpi: Yeah I like seeing the steps in other peoples work too, I try to saves screens of most images so i can see how i work, as its a blur sometimes hahahaha.

FAST ART: I will keep it up, my basics need alot of work still, but its a fun journey

lord_regenschirm: Thanks, the creatures name, or rather the name of the file while i painted it was called "gross worm bitch", think its suits so may keep it as that hahahaha

donalfall: Thanks for the critique, The butcher puzzled me for a while, could not grasp what it was that made her look strange, I thik her face is too flat, no cast shadows from her hair etc.
To get better without reference, do i need to practice more from reference to learn more, so that when i dont have reference i have more understanding?

shardana: Cheers dude! i aim to post more! been a bit lazy recently! eeek.

Ok here are a few lil sketches and doodles for paintings I have on the go at the moment, no reference used for the portrait image, just trying to remember stuff i have observed from life.
The geisha i used some reference for clothing and just the general aesthetic, still unfinished images though.

hi ghost, i like your morbid motives :]
you work it out in a believable way

couldn't you post your pics in smaller seize? sometimes I can't get the whole composition.. I think width 450px should do it!

next time you start some bigger project please post your first concepts, I like to see how's your beginning. I think you should use base shapes and lines for first compo to get the right props and volumes. some figures look flat and unnatural. let me see more pencils please!

Hello,

So yeh I can post my DMIV wips here to show you guys and gals!

exciting stuff this competition, been busy scribbling, decided to go for a Machine - Cyborg, something i feel I have an eye for.

So yeh here are my wips so far, just sketches evolving from eachother, unno where this will end up going, but I want the design to be very organic and ornate, with a Giger influence, I want that gothic/ dark technology look to it.

Trying to avoid guns etc, as they seem pretty useless against demons and magic, forcing the foes into close combat means the machines have more of chance I feel, but thats just my opinion.

These are nowhere near final the design will most likely change loads more till i finalise it.

I want to win!!!!!!!!!!!! so working real hard on this one!

another DMIV update for no one to look at ha ha ha
nah jokes.

just some more WIP stuff, started looking at the design of the back of the torso area, have got this idea that a baby Norm in a stasis tank is manipulated by the bots AI to control the "arms" that come out of the back of the bot.
so just desiging that area, think i gonna change it from where it s now tho, feel its way to Giger, want to add my own flare to it.

please crit me :)

ok just trying some more things out here.

Going for a super advanced anti grav technology, the machines are taking influence from their new foes, the demons, and as such are starting mimic their appearance and weaponry.

what you think? I am on the fence on this idea, I like the legs etc, but does this make the machine more formidable as its not constrained to the ground? I dunno, any ideas and/or thoughts would be helpful at this point

cheers!

Holy shit dude, you got some seriously nice colors and values going on in here. I would suggest you focus some on the anatomy, I think your work would benefit a great deal from that. Cool stuff man! Your designs are great, umm, for the rendering, try to think about edge control more, like, hard vs soft. There's a thread about that in the tutorials section -> http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=51913 Check out Vyle's stuff too, he's amazing with that!

There´s really a lot of cool stuff in three pages allready. Good going man. The big cyborg for the .... what izzit? .... Dominance War (?) looks interedsting. I am curious to how you´ll develope the thing further.

Your Sith Lady caught my eye in the voting but fell a little short. But it kinda worked for me. Dynamic pose. Well keep it up. See ya round the Activities Threads, eh?

I wasn't here and I didn't look at this sketchbook. The last pic there is pretty cool, although the values are very uniform. It could do with more contrast. I like the design aspect of it, it's kind of like a WH40K eldar or something similar. You going to stick in some legs?

u have some great sketches and ideas in here, however i think u would benefit to do a bit more anatomical and colour studies they will make your work even stronger

bbwolf cheers! yeh its dominance war iv, its a massive art competition running at the moment, its the forth time the event has been run, google it and check it out, has been good fun so far, really looking forward to taking everything I have learnt so far and doing my best image yet for the final illustration - then gettin crits and moving on from that to the stars... hahahaha.

I am quite proud of the sith, felt it was a bit of a leap for me, would like to go back and redo it, try to put into practice the edges stuff algenpfleger mentioned before, I prob will once the war is over ( dominance wars i mean ha ha ha)

thank you for stoppin in :)

donalfall ha ha ha i wont tell anyone u were here *memory erased men in black style*

Y eah going to stick some legs on and play a lot more with the design etc, sort out some problems I have spotted and ting.
cheers for the comments dude, appreciate it

Brun ha i saw that pic of you pulling ur face in the "what do you look like thread" very funny, then to see someone painted it was even funnier ha ha

Yeah anatomy seems to be a reoccurring theme/crit I have ordered bridgman and loomis today so will be gettin mah pencils out and gettin some serious studies in, as I really want to improve and progress, Because i love art and I love drawing!!

thanks for the crit, its good to hear them, take them in and learn.

All the best to you all,

DWIV final illustration thumbnail concept!!!!!

no colour as yet, what do you think tho? as a basic idea and layout, needs a lot of shape definiation etc

The magic the norm is trying to cast is being contained by a sound distortion field create by the cyborg...blah blah blah

tell me what u think

Ghostbrush
April 10th, 2009, 11:08 AM
some wip stuff, working off the thumbnail and sketching in the details to paint over later, still a long way to go!

surrealitycheck
April 10th, 2009, 11:50 AM
The blowback effect you're getting from the lines is perfect - it makes the picture feel very radiating. The silhouette effect in the post before where it looks like the parts of the cyborg are interrupting the volumetric light from the magic work very well, and should imo be focused on.

I feel horrible having to say this, seeing as you own me in every freaking way, but you need to work on your eyes dude :p

Some stuff to remember:
°The top eye-lid always casts a drop shadow on the eye-ball.
°The bottom eye-lid usually always catches light.
=> there's always a white space between the Iris/pupil and the lower eyelashes.
°Everyone has soggy eyes, perhaps us sketches a little more than other people, but there'll always be a darker part under the eye.

Just trying to help :-), love your compositions btw

Hahahahaha Cold, your cold man, ha ha my words are terrible at best :)

anyway here is some stuff, just playing really and having some fun,

so we have a paint up of one of the sketches i did a few posts a go, really something quite different for me, quite happy with the result as I had no idea what i was trying to achieve

we have a quick portrait of a friend of mine (Alix), showing her photoshop whilst doing it so its not really that great, but at least looks like her! thank you liquify for those small fixs!

The image of the girl in the bath was something i started while ago and abandoned, certain parts of it I like and others fail miserably, the hands and the blood in the water are what I like from this image

finally we have a doodle of my brother and I riding in my nissan micra!!!! drew this for my brother as he is at uni and misses our roadtrips :(

Enjoy your sunday everyone!

Dominance Wars final illustration thumbnails,

Please tell me what one you prefer, trying to convey a battle in progress, the cyborg is suppressing the magic that the Norm is trying to cast, due to advanced sound manipulation technology (my excuse anyway), wanted the battle to feel tense and one sided, almost like a last stand for the poor norm who is about to get messed up pretty bad! hahahaaaha

personally I prefer the image in the middle, think it does this the best

(thank you for the crit on that cold, appreciate it so much)

anyway these are just thumbs so dont worry to much about the details atm

yo yo yo so GOOD NEWS!!! My Bridgman book arrived this morning, you know what that means? PROGRESSION! from now on I get better, really going to address all the issues people have raised with my work so far and move forward, I am excited as this is the beginning I suppose.

Scanner is unfortunately out of action so i cant post my Bridgman studies yet, but I have bahzillionz of them now and I already feel like I am improving, which is great for confidence, anyway now for the update!!

First one is a quick coffee break sketch from imagination, no reference, no line work, just straight in with colour and a big brush, trying to work on my edges and see what i can remember from the studies, i really like this sketch a lot, so will work it up into a piece I think :D

Ok some Bridgman studies! yeh thats right!

followed by a study of a photo by Marko Schwinald - contortionists (Vicky), studied at the Whitworth Gallery in manchester

Followed by a quick crab sketch from the Manchester Museum ( you would not believe the size of this thing in real life :D)

followed by some quick studies on an elephant skeleton also in the Manchester Museum

hopefully doing this kinda thing every week will get more sorting out some anatomy and rendering issues

Are they going to be for sale anywhere? :P

Your bridgeman way up there look really really nice, and then on #97, the first piece looks nice. The oil factory thing I think it is?
Environmental studies are pretty fun.

Your stuff all looks really nice, but you seem to have this wet brush look to everything. I'd tighten the edges on your stuff with a hard brush and only use the wet brushes to blend the colors together.
Keep it up though, you're definitely on the right path. :)

On those colour studies, you seem to have bounced between oversaturating every colour in the first one to undersaturating in the second. I would suggest occasionally colour dropping the colour in the area you're looking at, not to directly apply to your work but to compare the colour and see in which direction you are making a mistake. Then you can isolate the biases in your colour vision and see under which conditions you make which mistake, then deliberately and consciously correct them. It may sound artificial, but after a while everything conscious turns unconscious, and you will have FOUGHT YOUR COLOUR BIAS PEW

On the topic of studies, I could ramble on forever, if I see you on vent I'll give you my usual spiel :P

Nice Sketchbook man, lots of images and I can see that you're practicing, thats the way to go...

I've noticed some stuff while I was looking at your drawings, for example: In almost every drawing, you seem to place the belly button way too low. I think you should try to review a little the basics of classic proportion, vitruvian man and all that jazz.
On your anatomy drawings based on things that I suppose you don't feel that confortable with (hands for example) you seem to end up with a way better result, probably because you end up trusting more your eyes than your brain.

Your color work is quite good, way better than your anatomy. The last portrait is very well done, I can see some subsurface scattering going on, nice effect. Just a little more definition on the edges, and maybe try to make things a little less blurred could give your coloring more definition, and make it look less "dirty". But, anyway, great coloring.

Good luck with your practice man!
Cheers!

Ok here is my WIP so far for CHOW 161 - The City

I have chosen to represent Hiroshima, She is a young city with a tragic past, but moving ever forward , growing and healing as time passes.

I am trying to work a lot of symbolism into her design, her hair flows in a shape reminiscent of a mushroom cloud, depicting her history.
she is a young girl to represent the rebirth and growth of the city since 1945.
The light she is heading towards is the future, hopeful and promising.

Finally, due to a super suggestion by Clochette Her costume has the shapes and forms of the Ginkgo Biloba flower, the first plant that grew after the atom bomb explosion, apparently a symbol of hope for the city.

Hope you like, obviously its nowhere near finished yet, just my wip

Jakers
June 4th, 2009, 08:19 PM
Just found your book so heres a few thoughts!

The last one...I really like that you are putting a story and adding things that a casual viewer wont catch right away. Her face is looking very flat because of the overall intense lighting. I understand the light is strong, but maybe less light on the side of the face, under the nose and a rounder chin might help. A few of the features feel off (its a hard perspective!) Id say the nose feels turned upwards, and the mouth is a little to the viewers left side. Its not clear as to what is composing the effects on the ground. Leaving her hands in light is a great touch...sense of harmony.

As far as studies of the head - draw from bridgman if you can, and study the very most basic forms - if you can indicate the major planes in your drawing, it will really demonstrate the 3D aspects. I think if you spend your time doing sketches, trying to make them solid and in perspective, back to basics, it will help when you go digital again in what to include. See you around! I'll be back

(and I'm am just staring at that previous color study (post 134) where you used different brushes - all I can say is wow - maybe simple is better sometimes or something - damn - it's beautiful - I can't stop scrolling up to stare at her.

So I have been musing over this newborn contest to try come up with an idea for it.
I have been playing with this idea of a comic book page layout, that tells a short story over a few well rendered and detailed panals, The story is still quite loose and the details I will be working out as the idea evolves I guess.

basic narrative:

A queen/diety/high echelon....someone important is giving birth to a special child, a new leader maybe, a god (details lol).
The father of said child is a general fighting a war on a distant planet, the story will show the birth then cut straight to battle where the general is receiving a holographic feed of his son, The idea of which will be quite poignant, I have started thumb nailing this story to get a better idea, wanted to share them here.

So here is a thumb of the moment the General recieves the video feed mid battle.

btw this shud hopefully make more sense later down the line ha ha 0_0 (i am a tool)

Walid D kind words, thank you, will keep working :D cheers!

ok so I am going to start my first oil painting tomorrow, very excited and nervous, just finishing off the digital that I will be using as my reference.

The piece is heavily inspired by the work of Michael Hussar, his website is here (http://www.michaelhussar.biz/)

The image is a portrait/personification of the town I live in, its a very socially orientated shallow town where money and "who you know" seems to be very important to the inhabitants, needless to say I hate the place :D no joke.

This girl represents that place, insecure and image obsessed, hence her blotchy face and over the top almost clown makeup.

wish me luck trying to recreate this on canvas tomorrow, I will post photos, but sure it will be a mess ha ha ha

Aha Monsieur Ghostbrush, we meet again.

On that young lady I has several criticisms.

Near her mouth, the strokes moving away from her lips are very obvious. They make that area seem dirty. Frankly I'm not sure they should be there at all, as the margins of the lips on such lipsticked lips would probably not be faded like that.

Second, the highlights on her lips seem very chalky. It looks like you were using a textured brush with white, which I'm not sure is the right way to go for highlights. If you were to get a straight up hard brush and do them I think they'd look more shiny - as it is, they look a little muddy and unclear, which is a style you seem to throw out a lot. I think attempting some more clearly delineated pictures would help you a lot, as that picture feels like it needs sharpening.

The chalkiness also shows up in her skin which is mostly white, which makes her seem dead - which is all well and good, but nonetheless I feel a little bit more colour would do her good!

Or is it a prosthetic leg?

Where do I sign up for collabs guise? :P

blaaaaaakman
June 22nd, 2009, 09:48 AM
It's a peg leg!
Ghostbrush, I love this concept. The execution of the idea is very clever: I really enjoy how you worked the archetypal pirate costume into his dress (eyepatch, cuffs, boots, etc.). The 'loosening up' was an improvement.

If the sketch "really does not say pirate to you" still, I'd suggest working in a bit more of that archetype. Give him a cutlass or two instead of the katanas, or a pirate-like hat, or a parrot-like companion.

I cannot wait to see how this piece pans out; I'd love to see him in color. Good luck, have fun!

EDIT. Just realized that you won't be making any more additions to this, and that you won't be the one to paint this. Silly me. Oh well, my comments still stand. Great job!

Holy schnikes you guys are both amazing artist... I smell a comic budding between you two ;)

surrealitycheck
June 22nd, 2009, 03:25 PM
The drawing above the pirate chick that you loosened up - I actually slightly preferred the older version, as the solid lines really emphasised that the forms had been perfectly represented. I really get the feeling that he has three dimensional structure when I look at him, which I didn't get when I looked at some of your earlier pencil stuff. The same is not quite as true of the pirate girl, but I think it's more a function of her less rigid and more fleshy and gentle soft clothy shapes - it's harder to imply her form without colour, and so the painted version looks perfect!

On the topic of your still lives; the most recent one is beautiful, with very strong diffuse lighting - but I nonetheless feel you are taking refuge in vagueness, slightly. Once you have done your first pass I think you would benefit a lot from going over every clear edge you can see in real life and defining it adequately in the still life as well. Even a small amount of definition in a painting can really make it pop, as I feel your style automatically lends itself to a painterly diffuseness. This is not necessarily a bad thing, but the contrast that you would gain by defining a bit harder in some areas would really help I think!

Sorry for always carping on, but you seem to take the criticism awfully well so I'll keep it up until you finally snap and try and find me in London 8(

Hehe, at our place we have a dog that sleeps in the same position. ^^
Nice work on your painting with the newborn, though one thing bugs me: The left eye of the character looking at the baby seems to be a bit bigger then the right eye which kinda messes up the perspective of his or her face. I like the colors, I need to work a lot on my own knowledge of color... ^^

Ok so had some really great advice given to me this last week (thanks Khan), so really going to knuckle down to the stuff that matters and will serve me better in my progression.

so here is an update of the life drawings/observational sketches and doodle I have been doing this week!

life drawings etc were done at a short course I n london I have just got back from, working in an Atelier style approach, really trying to improve accuracy and conveying form with pencil, drawing from casts, Charles Barque drawings and the model we had for the week! was an excellent course, learnt a lot.

Although most of these are unfinished, its more for practice of the principles, speed will come from repetition of the techniques so as long as I keep up the studies and critique myself, I WILL BE THE BEST!!!! mwahahaahhaha, no joke its true tho, get all ur basics dialled and u can use ur imagination to draw anything convincingly!

this is the start of a brand new and exciting time for me

Alex

PS: check my article out in 2dartist magazine, its the issue due out any day now :D

Matte_Art ha ha looking forward to seeing that drawing

Nicky S yeh very good point there, the eyes have not changed since i started that image, hence the weirdness, something i will get round too at some point. cheers mang!

FAST ART cool thanks for that dude, nice to hear u think so.

And the reffed ones are of course great (really like the one on the plane, and the last page of animals), But its your drawing and characters from head that I'm truly lovin'!!

Hope your trip when well Alex!

Laters,
matt

Ah, there's so much stuff I didn't see yet. Cool updates! The figure drawings just reminded me that I can't go to figure drawing class tomorrow D: (this unneccessary fact shouldn't keep you from going, haha) cool stuff, just keep updateing! I always feel like figure drawing classes help a lot.

Hey man! Your studies looks like they are helping you a lot. It reminds me that I have been neglecting those stuff myself. So I'll be trying to do the same. I think you are on the right track and doing loads of studies will help you out. You have some good renderings. I think more lighting work would studies would definately help the digi paints, but generally just keep the amount of studies you are doing.

oooh, even more!

Nice work, try to go a bit more extreme with the values, it'll give more volume to things. And the foreshortening of the arm seems a bit incorrect, the connection of the wrist with the rest of the arm... Something bugs me, it looks like his arm is made of rubber.
But it's just a matter of foreshortening, and overall things are looking good.
And damn, I need to go to life drawing classes aswell, but don't have any time right now, need to work, vacation job. :(

But keep it up!

Really glad you are going this way. Every second invested in a study pays back in pure gold.
It was a pleasure meeting you, bud.

Very Nice i like your works.
The last post where you are studing skin colors try and add a bit more warm colors like rosy red for the cheeks, nose, knees, etc. That gives it more life :D
This is a advise color on a 50%(or anything neutral) grey background so your eyes dont burn(at least my do ahah) and you do get a better notion of the valueshues.

Apart from that i have nothing more to say other than keep on doing what your doing :)

Take care.

nice work again!

I really like the spider creature, it's looking very good so far, great color usage, perhaps that the canvas should be extended a bit horizontally. Phew, sorry for the crap english every now and then. ^^

Keep it up man!

wow, the WIp is looking great so far. The colours look really good in that one.
As for the fleshtone studies you might want to use some more saturated colours like a little orange here and there to make the colours pop. Just keep it up!

Some very nice works in this SB. Liking a lot what I am seeing so far. Good job with the last SP, nice colors and that mask fits in the painting well. Keep rocking!
