View Full Version : initial blend of oils in painter

Problem: when i use the oils variants (pastels or paints) at the start of my strokes, the color that is put down is a near pure white that has no reason for being there. i.e. i pick a deep dark red and the first eighth of and inch of my stroke is a bright white. I love the blending properties of oils, but this is making it more difficult than it needs to be. My Painter X manual got misplaced while moving a bunch of stuff around at home, so i'll ask here.
What settings can i adjust to minimize this effect and ensure that the color that gets laid down first is closer to the one that i picked?

I think by putting resaturation at 100% u could solve this problem.. not very sure though :o

Painter always blends with white that's why the canvas is solid white (or other color you picked), Oils have the Well section grayed out since they have their own set of options, I've spend some time trying to configure the oil brushes to do what I wanted and I simply gave up, it's the same with the Watercolors where the color never comes out with the hue that I picked up, maybe Real Bristes is better in this regard.
I'm going to make a new oil brush that uses impasto and I'll post it here later, I think they are miles better than Oils unless I'm missing something very obvious, granted they aren't as sophisticated as the Oils are but the blending/color/grain behavior is much better in my opinion.
Here they are, if you don't like the dab just change for whatever you think would make a good brush dab.

Here's the preview, all three brushes use the same dab, the point was to make a brush that mimics a round brush and a bristle:

Thanks for the feedback, I'm happy that you managed to install them without issues, I was worry they wouldn't work because I'm not very familiar with brush sharing process in Painter 9.5 =)

Not true. Painter's brush variants that have blending and smearing characteristics blend with whatever color exists on the Canvas. If the Canvas happens to be white, they blend the current color with the white Canvas color. If the Canvas is, for instance, green, and the current color used to paint is red, the red in the brush stroke will blend with the green Canvas color.
If we paint on transparent areas of a Layer using a brush variant that has blending and smearing characteristics, we'll see white edges around the brush stroke unless the Layer is set to a Composite Method that makes the white invisible and the brush stroke transparent. When painting on a Layer using a brush variant that has blending and smearing characteristics, always be sure to paint on areas of the Layer that have existing color to blend with.
Oils have the Well section grayed out since they have their own set of options,
Again, this is not true. The Brush Controls' Well palette controls (or in the Brush Creator > Stroke Designer, Well section controls) are available for all brush variants in the Oils brush category. The Oils brush category does not have it's own Brush Controls palette (or Brush Creator > Stroke Designer section).
All I can guess is that you mean the Artists' Oils brush category which does have its own Brush Controls palette (or Brush Creator > Stroke Designer section) and the Well palette/Well section is not available for any of the Artists' Oils variants.
I've spend some time trying to configure the oil brushes to do what I wanted and I simply gave up, it's the same with the Watercolors where the color never comes out with the hue that I picked up, maybe Real Bristes is better in this regard.

Again, I'm assuming you mean Artists' Oils, not Oils, in your comments above.
In either of these two brush categories, there are several Impasto enabled variants, as there are in several other brush categories in the default Painter Brushes brush library. For instance (including Artists' Oils and Oils), Acrylics, Gouache, Impasto, and Smart Stroke Brushes.
Here they are, if you don't like the dab just change for whatever you think would make a good brush dab.

Well they are true, you just expanded what I've said or offered other possibilities.
Anyway here's Oils, with the Artists Oils dab and the Well grayed out. Sure there are brushes in the Oils folder that use other dabs but that's not the point:

Since some who read this thread may not know:
If we choose a brush variant from another brush category, for instance Oils, then change the Dab Type to Artists' Oils, the brush variant is no longer an Oils variant. It's now an Artists' Oils variant with some of the original brush variant's brush controls settings remaining.
