So I have decided to seriously commit myself to concept art and buy a pad to paint with painter/photoshop. Anything around 500 US $ suits me, but I'm ready to pay more if it what it takes to have a good pad.
What do you use, what do you recommend?

intuos 3 or a wacom cintiq.
Intuos 3 6x11 is pretty good an ranges around 300 dollars.
The smallest cintiq which is about 1000 dollars.

Amazon is good too:

Most of this is repeated before but really we need a good hardware and art supplies forum.

I'd seriously start out with an intuos, doesnt really matter which one (if you're lucky u can even pick up a used one from amazon or even wacoms own website).
I still work with my intous 2...though i bought the largest one, its not the most nimble thing to move around (if youre using ps and not painter where u can rotate the canvas)....
I just bought the larger cintiq, though i haven't even unpacked it yet (i know....i suck) but i wouldnt consider buying into this thing untill youre seriously racking up doe for your art, otherwise its just a very expensive toy.
Just remember, its not the tools that make the artist... ;)

I'm looking around for a new tablet as well..
Anyone know if Wacom is about to come out with something new? It's been a while sence the Intuos 3 came out. I would really like a small bluetooth intous for my laptop.

Just like to drop a question sort of related to this thread.
For anybody who upgraded from another tablet (Graphire, Bamboo, etc.) to Intuos, were there significant differences which makes the Intuos worth the cost?

Yes, it's definitely worth it. I've had my intuos 3 (6x8 ) for a while and was upgrading from a graphire and the pressure and tilt sensitivity (I have a 6d art pen :D) is awesome. Definitely worth it the extra 100 bucks. Also, I bought mine from provantage and it only ended up costing 270 after shipping and taxes. :P
I'm probably gonna end up getting 6x11 pretty soon though since this one is acting a bit funky. >.>

Don't get the small Cintiq (12WX), it stinks and is overpriced.

wo wo wo..... i love my 12wx i admit i hate how it has like 4 heavy cordes hanging out of my laptop and around my feet but if id actully set up my computer equipement itd be fine. its a pretty great little tablet moniter i only paid like 700 for mine.... i just need to actully practice with it more
but the biggest intuos or the most money u wana spend on one is probably the best bet i have no clue how the bamboo ones handel. but most people iv seen have intuos so must be ok

If you're a reasonable person get an Intuos 2 A4 size and order a new coversheet from wacom.

I bought the biggest cintiq and it broke after a few months. The repair wait queue is about 25 - 30 days, NOT counting the actual repairs and the time it takes to ship.
If you are just starting up, buy a small intuos. I personally don't find a huge difference between bigger intuouses and smaller ones, except that my arm gets tired faster on a big one :P It's not a big initial investment, and more importantly, should it break, you can exchange it at a local store instead of the ordeal I'm having to wait through.
The smaller cintiq isn't as bad as it sounds, by the way. Even with all its wires it's still extremely portable. It's also a huge plus being able to put it flat on the table and rotate it 360 degrees easily like a piece of paper.
