Can someone please advise me what brushes are best used for skin tones of people. And what the main photoshop brushes are best used for I really dont know what ones to use in photoshop what is the difference in hard round brush, soft round brush and the airbrush I dont really know which ones to use I have looked online and looked at a few books but none of them really give explanations of what each of these brushes are used for. I am really finding digital art overwhelming with all of the features and options in software like photoshop and corel painter I find drawing on paper a lot easier but I am still trying to get the hang of digital painting.

Personally I use mainly hard brushes for painting, usually around 80-90% hard. I use soft brushes just for particle based things like clouds or to blend colors. When painting, start out using a larger brush at near full opacity to add the basic color areas. Then start adding lighter and darker values lessening the opacity as you go to blend the colors. DO NOT RUSH! If you try to rush this process the end result will suffer. Once you have all the colors looking like what you want, add details. This is also a lengthy process so do not rush. If this is your first painting do not get discouraged by the finished picture. Nobody's first painting is what they wanted. With time and practice you will improve greatly. Also post your art in the critique section to get suggestions on how you can improve. Hope that helps:rendered:

If you look at my profile you can see an attempted digital painting of a mountain and red sky. I wanted to make this a fantasy illustration so I put a dragon in the foreground and got a few ideas from some reference pictures but when I finished the basic pictrure of the dragon I didnt know how to add details to it so I gave up and deleted the layer it was on. The thing about photoshop that confuses me is that there are so many brushes made for the program and I dont know which ones to use. Can anyone who is good at digital art on photoshop look at the picture and let me know what I could do to make it look better? I did buy some Massive black tutorials by Jason Chan on the conceptart website which were quite helpful. I just dont know what brushes the digital art professionals use for their illustrations

hey demonicdude.. there isn't no specific brush for skin tones or anything. first tip i would tell you is practice with the normal round hard & soft brushes. they do most of the work you'll need (be it skin tones, clothing). Then I would advise making your own brushes. And start messing around with the settings in the brush option palette, and draw and see what comes out of it. If you like it, then keep it, and so on. That's what pro's do. If you have a chance, check out page 9 of my SB (link in my sig) - those recent master studies I did? they were done in PS, with basically normal hard and soft (blurry) brushes. Nothing not to fancy or special.. just practice!
