This is my first time posting artwork. Here are some artwork that I did for Dead Space. I've worked on Dead Space form day one and it was the best project that I've worked on. This is only but a small sampling of artwork that we've produced for the game. I hope you enjoy.

Something about the way that game was marketed reminds me too much of Bioshock. By the way, beautiful environments! I look forward to seeing work from your next project some day.

Been playing the game the past few days, as a matter of fact. These sketches get the eeriness and cold feeling across pretty well. Did you do any of the main character sketches as well? Isaac's suit has this H.G Wells type look, which I thought was pretty cool.

Great work, Played Dead Space and it's one of the best horror games ever, i hope for now! Love the graphics, and concept is superb. Thanks allot.

Thanks for the kind words.

I have to disagree with the Bioshock look comment. We were well into production even before any word of Bioshock came out. The only similarities I see between our game and Bioshock is that there are characters in the game that has helmets.

My friend Chi did all the design for Isaac. He must've have done hundreds of sketches and designs before arriving at the final one.

The game was awesome. You really did a great job at capturing that 'abandoned spaceship' look. The morgue scene in the game had me scared shitless.

AMAZING concept art. Thank you so much for posting, very inspirational. I myself am a big horror game and Dead Space fan. I got the little artbook that came with the preorder, but I wish I could buy a full sized one!

Sadly, we didn't make a full sized artbook because of costs. There was a ton of artwork generated for this project and it's somewhat unfortunate that a lot of that work probably wouldn't be seen.

You can check out my site at http://www.imagethread.com to see some more artwork from Dead Space that I've done.

Totally feels like Alien and it's got a really creepy abandoned feeling to it. Great stuff. I'm always curious when someone's doing sci-fi where they get their references from.

imagethread
November 12th, 2008, 05:33 PM
We did looked at a lot of Sci-fi / horror films when we were working on this game, but we didn't take too much from Aliens as much as the visuals may lead you to believe. The aliens/star wars looked didn't resonate too well with the team during the initial stages of development. It wasn't until we drew influences from classical architecture that the visuals started to pull together.

I loved the game, finished it twice, then watched Dead Space: Downfall on DVD. The concept art under the bonus features was the best part. I know this post shows only a small sample of the team's efforts, and I am extremely hopeful to see a concept art book on Dead Space. Put that in the works for me, no matter the cost! Great Job!

I have heard "BioShock" and "Aliens" mentioned in the posts, but you guys must have had Event Horizon running in the background (the reference was awesome).

Awesome concepts, I love them all.

I just ordered Dead Space, and now I'm even more anxious to play it!

Good work!

We did release a 96-page concept art book. You should have received a free copy of it if you pre-ordered the game.

We did have event horizon playing in the background in the team's common area at the beginning of the project. how did you know? :)

November 13th, 2008, 12:47 PM
Just got my hands on the art book you mentioned, a friend borrowed his to me. You had a pretty awesome concept team on the project!

Other reference movies? My guess is Outland.

November 13th, 2008, 01:24 PM
I don't know Outland. Is that a good film?

By the way Mikko, I really dig your work. You have a great sense for color especially one of your latest speedpaint....the one with all the pink color.

thanks for the post, the concepts are awesome, maybe loose a little bit, but full of atmosphere...
i saw your artwork at the official web site too and btw i loved gun concepts. did you know the name of the artist who did it?.. i saw some ryan church's artwork too, it's very interesting how it was to work close with such a master? and again the overall artwork for the game created such a sense of the horror and drama, thank you!

I haven't seen Outland (a movie from 1981 with Sean Connery), but it has some nice environments that are in my reference folders ;)

Shame. I would have loved to see his work.

By the way, who did the creature designs for this game? Whoever it is, they deserve some mad kudos.

Ben Wanat designed all of the creature for Dead Space. In addition to being a kick ass VFX Director, he's an awesome concept artist as well.

Man I loved deadspace, but after seeing these I feel a little bummed that the environments in game couldn't capture quite the same flair. Personally I'm looking forward to the day when games try to look like art rather than photos.

Tons of nice tech-ish floor/wall paneling. I can think of a few way you may have gone about this. If you have the time to response id be curious to know, it might help save time from the way I might go about it.
Thanks... Killer work man.

I played Dead Space. It was ok... I got bored :P I liked the art style but I didn't like how the actual space ship was generic and didn't actually show any real hospitality ( I mean that it looks like its meant to be filled with zombie-monsters. There is no comfortable seats or warm colours or homely objects or rooms. It is all cobolt metal and iron grills...) But apart from that I liked the art style just needed some reality... The actual skill is amazing though just maybe the choices of the art directors.

imagethread
November 14th, 2008, 03:56 PM
that's the balancing act the art director has to juggle. on the one hand, we could have made the ship more friendly, but that wasn't the type of game the team wanted to make. we did do a whole bunch of concepts with a lot "friendlier" designs and colors, but they just didn't fit. i'll see if i can pull some up and post it.

the ship was purposely designed to feel cold and uninviting; it is a mining ship after all and not a love boat type of ship. we drew a lot of inspiration from battle cruisers and mining rigs and it's hard to find a place where it's pleasant.

You guys did an impressive job on the art for this project. There are a number of strong works in this group - I wanted to point out that on your site: images #6, 16, 18, & 27 are very compelling designs. Thanks for showing and let us know what you're up to next, imagethread.

Thanks for all the kind words. I've been incredibly busy with work and with taking care of my baby that I haven't had the time to upload some more images. I'll do it once I get the chance. Our studio is doing a ton of new IPs so I'll definitely post more images up once those games get release.

Great work! I LOVE the painting of the marker on the colony; great detail and composition.

If you have time to reply, I've got a quick question:

How are the design briefs actually divided up amoung the artists at EA? I've read that concept artists in bigger teams often get work that plays to their individual strenghts, but is there more to it than that?

Very cool enviroments!
If I can share my opinion about the game... well, it was scary for a short time just like a Doom 3 - a the begining of the game.
Camera is frustraiting. Ok, it's a new idea and player is force of habit in time spend on the game. Why it's frustraiting? Because any time I was in the corridor or any room I don't seefrom where appere the monsters, they where next to me screaming when I move the camera right or left.

But... all enviroments which I seen where stunning! This is one of thefirts games that has new styles in S/F designs, of course based on the for and shapes we know form earlier s/F movies or games.
Even if gameplay in this game is no soo good (of course it's my opinion) it was a lot of fun to visit Ishimura space shipand seeall that rooms - destroyed or not :)

Great job!

Wow. My thanks to syk3 for floating this old thread to the top. Wonderful to see this.

I'm a few hours into Dead Space (Dead Space 2 came out this week, so Steam was offering the original for £5). It's stunning to look at.

It occurred to me that, conceptually, it's no different than the original Doom. I mean, with the environment becoming more alien and organic and...squishy and veiny as the story moves along.

Which means our horror myths haven't advanced in twenty years. They're just much, much more convincing and rich.
