This is my attempt to try and break out of the rut I am in as far as poses are concerned...My main concern right now is the positioning of the hands and arms(not the sketchy warrior)...does it look off?

here is my refrence

I thought his arm looked a bit short, so I did a 'paintover'.

Not sure you'll agree, but here you go anyway:

I can see you followed the reference pic, but still there's something off with the arm. All IMO, of course.

Thanks for the input John.. I can see where the size of the elbow pad would make his arm look stubby

i think its because his shoulder pad is so far back, you lose the slope of his shoulder blade. try bringing the shoulder forward a bit and see how that works

heres a quick butchery of your work to show what i mean. i just cut-pasted and smudged the gaps in so excuse the lack of quality haha

Along with what form_n_focus said about the shoulder pad, I think his forearm is too short. I like the expression on his face. good work.

Would just like to say that if there is anything that is wrong, then it's your reference. That dude looks like he's trying to fall over instead of striking. His shoulder is hunched up and his body balance is way off.

He also tries to chop that other guys head straight off from the side. He will never get enough speed and power the way he is doing it. He probably watched to much starwars 4 where the actors does piruettes before they strike.

Always downwards. If you were to cut thru someone's neck (a bad idea) you would do it cutting downwards at an angle. Never sideways.

I made a quick google search for Iaido. http://www.kolumbus.fi/tiia.jokinen/iaido/kuvagalleria.html

Look at their shoulders their backs, straight up, balanced. Their foots are at a paralell angel. You cant cut thru anything standing on one foot.

The reason the arm looks short is that in the ref the left arm (our right) is bent too, the elbow pointing slightly toward us. The upper arm in your pic is flat (in the plane of the camera) therefore it looks short.

Nice going otherwise!
