Congratulations on reaching 100 events, Beautiful. It's not a small accomplishment, so here's a special salute to all the artists who have helped to get there by competing in the Challenges...

Wow - that is really awesome Chaos! :)
Some fantastic listed suggestions to pick from as well. I'm sure this will be a hot round!
Pern, Disk World, Foundation, Dark Materials, Deryni (would actually be Gwynnedd, if I remember correctly), Dune, Burrough's "Mars", Wonderland - just some of my favorites!

1984, Brave New World, Children of Men (you'd have to bring a lot of origonaity to these), Shade's Children, I Am Legend, Aladdin (Roger Allers), Around the World in 80 days, Battlefield Earth (L. Ron), Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?, Eaters of the Dead, Fight Club
You can make an RPG out of almost anything and I think a good idea here is to make yourself standout and making seemingly mundane or "normal" environments seem extraordinary. For example, Fight Club, its based in the "real" world but you could render it in a hyper real or almost surreal style with an emphasis on dull unsaturated tones and bright color.
Im not talking to anyone in particular just throwing out ideas because I have a feeling everyone is going to choose the typical grand, epic, open, vast, megalithic type of environment idea.

buck weasel...
to start with your definition of Epic is rather small. Fight club is not epic.
the roger aliers aladdin I would no accept , although the actually 1001 nights is on the list. i might accept around the world in 80 days. I Hate L.ron hubbard.
of course you can make an RPG out of almost anything. thats kinda the point... but would it be a GOOD rpg?
I would also accept Redwall
vast open and magalithic is definately the right direction.
Kitty dear most of that list was written centuries before even YOU were born
silly

Congratulations on getting EoW 100! Pretty interesting list of topics for the event, even though I don't recognize any of them.
I really can't wait to start doing the "" of the Week events, but it'll have to wait. To anyone doing EoW 100, I wish you luck and have fun.

So you just want the typical epic poem high fantasy type stuff?
chaosrocks
November 12th, 2008, 09:10 AM
no, not high fantasy nessisarily.
could be historical or SF Goth or steampuunk , I do want Epic though...
and who said anything about typical?
the challenge is to surprise and startle. make it new.
i do resent your dismissal of epic poetry as subject matter
I once worked on a project called "Adventures in Purgatory" part Dante Part Alice..... im Just giving , as a basis, the Icons of Epic.
I'm hoping that imagination and vision will carry on from there.

I read over the list again, and I must have missed the five I did recognize. There's still those others I will take a look at.

Based on the kind of stuff Richard Solomon has been saying, I would say only be typical if you want to be some kind of slogger in this world.
If you want to stand out, then be very recognizably you, and do it well enough that someday others will end up considering such work to be typical (because of all those people trying to copy you).

I wasn't trying to insult epic poetry, I am just trying to see where the limits are make sure that I understand the rules correctly. Since I had an idea before and it turned out to be off base, I just want to get a better idea of your definition of epic. To me epic literature is something like Gilgamesh, Iliad, Odyssey, or Beowulf but then you look at an interpretation of Odyssey such as O' Brother Where Art Thou? (despite it being a movie) where the story is still "epic" but the environments are what most would consider not epic. I guess I should have asked this question to begin with, if I were to interpret an approved literary work as set in the modern age would I automatically be disqualified?

nope. in fact as long as it is clearly the epic saga in question, I would have no problem withthat what so ever. but do remember the goal is not to tell the story , but to base an rpg in that world. if you can pull it off... more power to you.
