Hello.
I've browsed through this site but this is my first time actually making any type of post.
I'll be posting some of my stuff here. Hopefully I'll be getting some good constructive criticisms to help me get better.

The cat is my absolute favourite, he looks so menacing yet cute. Portraits are nice, are any of them from life?

Just had a critique on this today in class. lots of things i could correct and make better. Done in photoshop, which i don't have a lot of experience in yet.

silhouette project for digital illustration class. done back in december. the assignment was to illustrate a discovery scene through a silhouette created in illustrator. it was my first time using illustrator. i'm still trying to get use to it.

I really like the silhouette! I think it's very good you did not try to detail too much. The only thing that looks odd to me is that tree on the right, the branch in the upper corner. But I very much like the middle part of the picture :)

iphigen: yeah, the tree is a little strange. i thought about fixing it, but decided that it's better to just move on and do more drawings instead. thanks for the comment :)
Chompo: thanks. i realized that scratchboard is really good drawing fur, but i have to say i'm not a huge fan of scratchboard.

another gaia commission. I wanted to practice painter (just got the 30 day trial, thinking about buying the whole program). I spent a whole day watching tutorials on google videos. It definitely helped a lot. photo reference used for the portrait

I really like this. All of your stuff is very confident and well executed, especially the first one on #20. Very well done. I don't really have any critiques, just complements. I'm looking forward to seeing more form you, keep it coming.

I drew this today in photoshop, based a friend's character. I'm struggling with the issue of style. Being an illustration student, anime style is quite frowned up in my major, although I think there are great illustrators out there who do great work in "anime" style. Since copying anime character way back in the days is what got me interested in drawing, it's hard to let go of it, but at the same time i want to break away and find my own voice...I'm just having a very difficult time right now with all this stuff, seeing how I need to build a cohesive portfolio to start looking for internships....anyone have any advice on this kind of stuff?

Thank you! I really appreciate you taking the time to comment. Definitely motivates me to post more work on here when you know someone out there is interested in your work.

Hey there! I really like a lot of your ideas and I think you have a strong start. I also really like your charcoal portraits. As far as your style goes, I think you need to hold off on thinking about it too much. Styles occur naturally, since stylization comes about in how you translate certain problems that the subject presents itself. Copying another style is not really a good thing since it limits you greatly, and anime is also very frowned upon unless it is done really well. (as with any style) So what you need to do is master the basics. How value and structure work, then how color theory works and eventually you'll find your style emerging. I hope that helps, or at least somewhat encouraging :D

Hi there majortom! Your comment is definitely encouraging. I guess I'm what the other kids and professors in my school would call a "late bloomer". I never worried about style or having my own voice type of things until I took this class called Sketchbook 1. At first, I was confident, but as the quarter went on, I watched my classmates emerge with unique techniques and styles and I'm probably the only one in class who has no idea of where I want to take my art or what direction I'm headed into. Just a bit depressing to think that I'm graduating in 2011 and I haven't even begin to think about possible career options...aside from being a high school art teacher...so much for wanting to never go back to school haha
But I know I definitely have to just keep drawing and I'll have to believe in myself more and believe the fact that with more time and practice I'll know what I want.
Thank you for your kind words!

forgot to post this when i posted the compilation of my sketchbook.
this is also a page from it. it's watercolor on sketchbook paper so the paper wrinkled quite a bit, but i guess i don't really mind it that much

A work in progress shot of an oil painting of Johnny Depp. Had to paint a celebrity realistically. This is my first time really touching oil since summer of 06 when I attended a pre college program at SAIC. Although it was very frustrating at times, I think the process is very rewarding. I about 2 more weeks to completely finish the painting. I think I'll be doing more in oil from now on.

some paint studies i did a few weeks ago. the orange on the left is painted with oil, and the orange on the right is painted with acrylic.
http://i37.photobucket.com/albums/e90/dirty_sox/orangestudy.jpg
the drawing on the left is done in graphite and the drawing on the right is done in watercolor. both were done for a class back in december. i'm not totally happy with either but i feel like i've learned enough from doing them and it'll be better to just move on

a painting i did for acrylic painting class about a year ago. i don't know why i painted this, but it was a lot of fun, and it got a lot of attention from both guys and girls. it's not completely done yet. i still want to go back and tighten some things up
