Not sure whether this thread will be good or will die the moment it is created, but here goes:
I have always found weird and interesting facts inspiring for my work, so why don't we share some weird facts with one another in this thread?
My first contribution is part of the title of this thread; leaches from the rectum of an Hippo:
...scientists working in the Kruger National Park in South Africa have a different answer: inside the warm, airless reaches of the hippo's rectum are leeches looking for love...
This fact was also confirmed on a Channel 5 TV show called Nigel Marven's Blood Suckers.
Here is the article (http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=mg14519641.500) with the full low down on this anus sucker.

It makes me wonder how many parasites are living in us at any given time. Gives me the willies.

Cheese is covered in mites (insects). All cheese, all the time. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cheese_mite)
You are mostly microbes and other bacteria. There is no real *you.* You are a colony of other creatures working together for their continued welfare. (http://www.wired.com/medtech/health/news/2004/10/65252)

Heh yeah, those are great. I found out that your mind is not able to remember the original size of earth in the videos over the course of the animation. That's why I like the images more. A lot less impressive (that's what I love about the animations), but the perspective is more traceable.
Oh and by the way, Antares (the big daddy in the pictures above) is STILL IN OUR GALAXY, which is just a small dot in the universe itself. Not only are we small. Everything is.
