ROUND #134 :: The Eclectic, Eccentric Singer
DESCRIPTION
The Eclectic, Eccentric Singer
Inspiration: Tom Waits "Brawlers, Bawlers and Bastards"
Description: A man or woman who has been around for a long time, their age disguised by wrinkles and scars that the times have written on their face. A person of faith, but not necessarily of a religion, just a power of greater than their own. No man tells them what to do with their life, they are guided by winds and season. A drifter by day and a power of soul by night. They travel from town to town, playing in low-lit bars, drinking to drown out a regretful past. They sleeps when they can, eats what people give them. Their clothes are dated to a time before modern day technology i.e. a tattered suit with old snakeskin boots.
Their only goal in their memorable life is to sing about their life story, full of tragedy and despair. They has a good heart but life and appearance shows different.
In short, a vagabond.

This is kinda funny, I love Tom Waits, and made this quick colorsketch of him a couple of months ago. It will be hard to design a very different character with the same theme, seems like a tough challenge.

I wasn't too excited at first by the topic, but the more I thought about it the more ideas came. At any rate I thought the old cadaverous rocker like Keith Richards or Iggy Pop would be a fun place to start. So here are some exploratory sketches to get into the swing of things.

And getting a bit more into the direction of the brief...

Felt like drawing something so I figured I'd go with the CHOW brief so I sketched this character based roughly on my brother.
http://img83.imageshack.us/img83/7452/chow134wip01jz0.jpg
I decided to go with an abstract look and make it look as if the music is radiating out of him and/or like he's in his own world when playing his music and just had fun with it and this is the result of that. It's probably a bit too abstract and I plan on refining it and make it clearer and more 'normal' sorta the direction his face is headed. Hopefully I'll have more time to work on it this week.
http://img374.imageshack.us/img374/3627/chow134wip02ga4.jpg
EDIT: If abstract-esque stuff isn't allowed in the CHOW poll that's cool, I'm just having fun with this and trying something different.

Cool idea. Been stalking CHOW for several weeks now and finally have some time to participate.
Here's an idea I'm currently running with, not sure how much it fits the topic exactly (after looking at the ref pics posted). But from reading the brief images of old Western drifters and disillusioned holy men kept on coming to mind.

Constructive note I'd recommend for us all to ponder - a CHOW who "has been around for a long time, their age disguised by wrinkles and scars that the times have written on their face."
I'm trying my damnedest in WIPs not to skew this guy too young - I think the faces Aeronik did come the closest to that description so far...those pics that UCT posted might have the same "sound" or "soul" or "feeling" as Waits (though I have no idea, I listen to music ranging from opera to the 1930's), I think we have to keep the character description in mind...
Interesting, from what I'm interping from the piece Edriss posted - do we necessarily have to set this "present day" or even 20th/21st century? Can we go the whole "wandering Renaissance minstrel" route?

I noted that piece while I was at work today.
It needs to be contemporary. As is, Edriss, your piece is a bit off topic. Bring him forward and it will work, even with the cool ride.

YIIT - this is going to seem like an odd crit, but her head is tilted the wrong way. She isn't using a shoulder rest, so she'd probably tilt her shoulder up, and her chin further into the chin rest, tilting her head away from the viewer...
I'm probably just being picky but she looks uncomfortable and I love my violin. :)

Do you mean like this ?

I love the violin, love the sound and the distortion it creates on the player however I have never even touched a real violin in my life.Although I have seen people who play I realy dont know the right position it should be held.
On top of it all I have this personal policy of not using any references (dont ask its just plain inlogical and snob)... so your crit is not odd but greatly appriciated ( even more if youre a violin player :) )
But I wanted to create this feeling that after a long solo "the siren" pulls the bow away from the violin and with the sam movement her head releases it tight lock on the violin (in order to create drama) and we see the violin players face... also in the right position the head blocks th violin so I thought it was more practical too.
So please do crit it , tell me your opinion. Thanks.

Well, in this case I would recommend reference, even if you don't use it, persay, and just glance at it. We're taught a very specific way to hold the violin, and though most people wouldn't notice that it looks strange, I always will. :P It looks better now, but it still looks a little weird/awkward...
Though looking at it, I think I know why.
When you use a violin, the left arm actually wraps around the other side of the violin. Right now you have the arm coming up and behind the neck of the violin, and the hand awkwardly perched over top from behind.
Instead, the arm goes under the the neck and the hand twists so the fingers can reach the strings.
I can't recommend reference strongly enough because I don't think I can describe it. :/

Nuttin' But Stringz might be an idea to look at even if they're male and probably have another music style than what you had in mind... heh. Appearantly they got known through America Got Talent.
They play while jumping, walking, laying backwards, leaning and even without connecting the violin to their chin. Still they use the traditional pose a lot, at least as a base. Maybe this can help you?
Just skip the talk and the show stuff, look at them playing :)

I think Sorknes' research captured something in the brief - those pics posted have that "vagabond" feeling to them, which seems essential.

Just a thought for everyone, probably unneeded. I was in band for nine years and something I noticed was that each instrument carried it's own personality and attracted those with the same type of personality. Just a thought on choosing an instrument.

YIIT - I know this is kinda late to bring up as you are pretty far into this piece, but remember this is a CHARACTER competition, and extablishing character is REALLY difficult without seeing your subject from the front. At the moment I gather this is a female violin player with interesting clothes, but not much here is speaking to the vagabond with a world of experience written on her (or his) face.
You've put in some good work, it'd be nice to see you save this piece.
Remember the brief, and remember what you are trying to get across.

Hungryan - I was having computer trouble this week too, don't you hate that? I like your piece, the only thing I can see is that on the last piece, his right knee blends into the background a little bit too much which makes it look a little flat. Hope the computer stays up enough for you to make it to finals!

November 10th, 2008, 12:52 PM
Some late, but hopefully useful notes on the pictures:
Mutley: in the brief it says the character has to be old, or something like that, and yours doesn't look like that
Pixeltuner: He is also not too oldish, his belly and arms look a bit too smooth in my opinion, almost like a tube or something, there's no definition of any anatomy on it. Also his back is arched in a very strange way, is it possible for a human to be such a back curve? All the stylistic little pieces are nice.
Yiit: Good use of perspective, but she looks also very young, and is she a singer? Nice anatomic (and other) details, you really got that part very well!
Aeronik: The best piece so far in my opinion, the theme looks a bit like mine, but I swear I didn't see yours before I made mine! And you topped me in evey aspect, I'm ashamed :)
Daray: She is not old, and not singer, but I like it! This is the best picture I've seen so far from you (I think I only saw 3)
MJ Alcazar: If you use pen for shading (is it a pen?), it's better, if you try to follow the surfaces with your lines. Check how Duerer and Rembrandt used a pen to shade stuff. I mean this for example for the counter in the background, where you used lines with all kinds of angles, and because of that the surface starts to 'wave' around. There also some perspective problems with the top and the bottom of the counter. The figure itself has some nice detalils, and I especially like her hand. The face has some problems probably too, her cheeks look a bit like she got punched in the face, like it's swollen.
Rodriguez: The pose is a bit stiff, but it's a funny character
RayTwicket: She is scary. I see that you wanted it to be deformed, but still her hands are NOT deformed in a nice way. Her microphone hand for example looks like some rope knotted around the microphone.
Invinciblewombat: Maybe his furthest hand/arm is a bit too big? Or just coming from someplace weird? The pencil sketch had big head, but somehow that character looked more fun to me. A nice drawing although.
Equality: The arm going down looks a bit small probably, but the picture has a nice feeling, and kudos for making it in china ink!
C4L3b: nice Waits sketch, he looks a bit younger on the picture isnt it? The hand going forward looks small
Adele: will you finish this? She also looks a bit young.
Amaliax: You've cut the picture in a strange way, but it looks much better than your dragondentist one!
Sorknes: I don't it see enough to criticise it effectively, will you finish this?
Artofinca: He looks like a voodoodrummer guy, strange interpretation.
Poshspice: That piano girl has very nice mood, I like it.
Realronn: it seems your were thinking a lot about references, will you finish the picture?
Edriss: did you make this digitally? It has very nice crayony feeling. I like this ideas, it's just strange how you've cut the picture at the legs of the pure donkey :)
Cognition.sb: Nice, funny ideas. I understand that you like painterly feel, but her left hand which holds the cigarette has some problems, the 'topology' of it is a bit messed up (I don't know how to explain it better)
I know my stuff is very far from perfect also, so feel free to criticise it.

@hungryan ... Yeah, you're right, now I read the brief. Next time I'll be more careful. Good luck to all! :)

Thanks Hungryan for the pointers! I'll definitely be applying those in the future. I looked up those artists and I see what you're talking about. Again, thank you!

there are some old ones about, but not in this style at all. This style is defiantely a maturing phase in my art. But yep, shes not old, nor a singer, so thats why I pulled out. Ran out of time too ;) Thanks though Hungran!

I'm not nearly finished, obviously. Indecision, beat me this week.
I'm trying to inflict more style on this, a la James Jean, Glenn Barr, and Ashley Wood.

Hungryan: Thanks for the crit! I'll fix that when I get home if I can beat the polling.
Pepps: Hacked up your pic really quick to repose him. Hope it helps because he looks off-balance, and his right foot should be more aligned with the knee direction. The fix I've posted is a pretty boring pose though, unfortunately. I locked his left leg so it supports most the weight and reigned in his right leg and foot.
