Hi! I think it's about time I started a sketchbook here. It's so inspiring to see everyone's progress in these threads, I thought I'd start my own. Hopefully, if you're reading this, you'll give me some tips or suggestions so that I can make some progress myself.

Right now, I don't have my most recent sketchbook. It's at school being graded. However, I do have some older stuff that I think still represents me pretty well. Have at it.

Can you read the text? I drew this while I was reading Hermann Hesse's Demian. It's one of my favorite quotes from the book.
Tried challenging myself with drapery.

Here are two paintings. The painting with the dame was done this summer as an art assignment. To be honest, it was a bit of a rushed job. I started waaay late and barely finished. One of these days, I'm going to go back and fix the head & drapery.
There's also that apple still life. Sorry about the glare, it's either my POS camera or my picture-taking skills..

My "Space" piece was done in oils on a textured canvas, really fun to work with.

Here's a semi- self-portrait (it never got finished) and a little sculpt that I worked on today.
You can't really tell from the poor photo, but the figure isn't stick-thin. It's fun to lay on blobs of clay to simulate fat and "softness".

Thanks Junko! I don't get the time to sculpt very often, but I think I like it more than painting! More therapeutic, maybe?

Teensy update. The apple core still life is very old-- from 2007- but it's one of the last digital artworks I've done.

Hi psypomp, great sketchbook so far ^^

I really like that when you use color, you combine lots of subtle colors to produce a stronger effect. I particularly enjoy the application on color in the apple and goblet still life in post #10. The sculpture project is looking great so far - I think her figure is perfect; it's beautiful but it also appears very natural. I really like the black and white self portrait in your last post; the sense of light creates a strong sense of volume and shape, and the fact that the toning of the paper shows through produces an almost haunting atmosphere. In the img with the 2 candles, did you use watercolor first and then colored pencil on top? The effect is wonderful.

For crits, your pencil work is sometimes terribly light and difficult to read (particularly in your 2nd post); using some darker lines could help tho the problem could also be your scanner. In the img with the 2 candles, the elipses on the left candle don't appear to match (the top the candle has a really wide elipse as if we're looking down at it, and the bottom elipse is very straight).

The two candles "painting" was done in aquarelle colored pencils, so I basically went over a regular drawing with water and ended up with that. Hard to explain.
You know, I never really noticed the ellipses on the bunny! I just looked at it and literally did a facepalm. What a stupid mistake! Thank you for pointing that out; sometimes it takes a new eye to notice problems like that.

As for the pencil stuff, I KNOW. I physically cannot press harder on the paper (yes, I seriously edited it in PS to fix the contrast, and it's still like that)! I really have to work on being more deliberate in my pencil strokes.. it's a problem with my handwriting, too.

Oh I'm not asking you to press harder. I am however suggesting that you try out some softer pencils and keep them very sharp when you're working on your finished lines. A 2B or 4B pencil from the art store or even cheap colored pencils could give you a very different result. For instance, the candle drawing/painting is also rather light but the addition of color makes it endlessly easier to read. Just keep trying out different tools and you'll find the ones that work out for you.

I think I'll try that. My pencils are generally limited to mechanical pencils, so it's no surprise that my drawings are so light! I actually have some "drawing" pencils made just for that-- I'll try using them more. Thanks!

Brand new stuff, finally!

The hand study was for a painting I did last week, all the rest were done yesterday.. figures studies are from Posemaniacs, the nude is based off of a photo by Christian Coigny (http://www.christiancoigny.com/index.html) and the cat photo.. I don't remember where I got it from!

I hope these are dark enough!
