Welcome to CA. That's fantastic start. Your figure sketches have very dynamic pose and the composition seems to be planned in a good way.
Keep posting :).

Damn, my scanner doesn't pick up light strokes at all...that's going to be an issue. For the time being, just imagine that it looks way better than it does.

Bought an Intuos3 yesterday. Added a digital thingy to the first post. The new tablet looks so shiny and expensive, it makes me just want to draw forever.

Exams starting up now. Probably won't be able to update for a bit, unless I absolutely need to draw something...
Meissner: Haha, you're too kind. I wasn't even going to do any art tonight, but here's something kinda quick.
Peetaer: Thank you. I don't have much else, unfortunately...I'm studying chemical engineering, which leaves precious little time for art.

And Peetaer speaks the truth.

Okay, so now I actually need to study for exams. Promise I'll be less sloppy during the holidays...felt kinda rushed for this.
Peetaer/Meissner: I really wish I could. But I'm in my third year, at this point I think I'm too far in to drop out.
bleedsheet: Thanks!

Great stuff m8. Chemical engineering :) I know what you mean when you say little time for art :) I like colors you use and dark tone of drawings. Great work engineer :) Keep drawing whenever you can :D:D:D:D

Hi Septomin
thanks for commenting on my sketchbook!
some advice i think would be not to use too much black
(i think i'm guilty for that sometimes too)
you've got some really nice use of colour and movement in your pics tho
septomin
December 15th, 2008, 10:55 PM
Stevan: Thanks man.
Jeff Lai: Thanks for the advice. I definitely agree about the black, I've gotta fix that habit.

Debating about how loose to keep the strokes. I should probably render more tightly, but how much more...

I've been doing some leg/foot studies. I've basically just been drawing legs as cylinders/blocks up to this point...
Also, I know the photoshopped 'background' looks silly, but I messed up the pose and I had to save it.
Rustveld: Thanks man. But I don't know, the faces I draw seem so flat to me.

Brun: It's true, I've been staying away from color lately. I've just been trying to grind the basics I guess. I recall hearing that if you can get the thing looking good in greyscale it's easier to work in color. Thanks for the kind words!

adi: Those ones I posted were mostly E.M. Gist, but I'm also going through Loomis, Bridgman and Hogarth.
Rostas: Thanks man. You're right about that Hogarth-ness...I guess I fall back on building things out of blocks and cylinders when I'm confused.
Suira: Thanks, I will!
The Pariano: Hahah, thanks. I'm definitely going to have to do some enviros at some point...but my current goal is to be drawing nice figures from memory. So it'll be only studies in here for a little while, I think.

great stuff! i'm only saying this 'cause i don't see anyone else pointing it out, but i noticed a tendency for elongated legs in your work, and i know from experience (albeit very little) that's a very easy mistake to make. but yeah dude stick with it!

For your last b&w digital - just the thighs are too long and the leg beneath the knee is a bit short. When you fix that you will see that the torso is a little bit long too.
The last drawings are really good, lot of feeling they have, especially the third one. :)
septomin
February 14th, 2010, 11:35 PM
marina, thanks. Definitely see what you're saying. I did some lasso tool...what do you think?
I also realize the upper body is too large on the male model drawings...but there's no lasso tool for newsprint.

I've been working on these three for the last few days, but I don't think I'm getting anywhere. I'm planning on applying to TAD with these, so maybe I've been wasting time trying to make them better than I'm actually capable of. It's obvious the competition for scholarships is going to be stiff...
Speaking of TAD...I'd be forever indebted to you if you would nominate me for this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=181150), if you think I deserve it. It could be my only chance at finally getting an art education. I wasted a good three years studying engineering, trying to please my parents, and I don't know how long it'll take to correct that mistake. Maybe it doesn't show, but I've spent every waking moment since I dropped out last April trying to make up that lost time. If nothing else, I'd like to prove to my parents that it's been worth something.

Hey, thanks for stopping by my sb.
Good work with the figure studies-would like to see more colors, but I can tell that you're trying to nail anatomy, which isn't easy -_-;;
A few notes: limbs and torsos seem to be a little exaggerated and long. I can't tell if that's intentional or not, but I would be careful about making them too exaggerated.
Also, be careful about boobs! Remember that they are soft and fleshy, and stretch and move with the motion of the body. They don't generally hang there like globes.
Best of luck with the scholarship!

February 16th, 2010, 11:58 PM
I agree with the comment above but I like the distortions in the figure. What do you do to impove your rendering skills? I always seem to have a problem with that or it's not exactly the way I want.
