these are nice

keep working on your head proportions.

do some drawings of skulls. FROM LIFE.

work on your accuracy......your marks are great...but keep working on correctness.

be more exact in your drawing....youre nice and loose at times...keep that...just watch your proportions. the womans head in particular...and in your self portraits...the heads are always a little off....look closer....MEASURE.

double check everything as you work. the guys forearms are very short....the fingers on the hand on the right are VERY long....

again..yer on the right track...but you are really not measuring enough. if you are confident with your accuracy you will shine.

got me?

yeah, i have been having a lot of trouble lately with proportions. i can tell that something always looks off...but i can never tell what. when i measure from the model it comes up the same on my drawing, so i dont know what is wrong...i guess i just need to practice and observe more. thanks for the comments jason.

Hey, I wouldn't be too upset about the proportion thing, that'll fix itself if you keep working on it. The feel of your drawings are beautiful. The line and gesture are really solid (which I think are much more difficult for most of us to get right). Keep postin!!

I think your proportion work is showing. Construction is also my current concern. I'm thinking about asking for one of these skulls (http://www.anatomy-resources.com/human-anatomy/sh210A.htm) for Christmas. Anybody have any skull reference recommendations?

Daarken, I absolutely love your rendering style. I wish my life drawing stuff had the same confidence in the line render. How long are these poses?

SouL

Daarken: How's that Intermediate Anatomy class? I'm thinking about taking it next semester... just kind of want to know what I'm getting myself into. Better to hear it from a student than one of those lame advisors.

Proportions are supre critical when it comes to standing poses. Annoying, isn't it?

Good stuff, though. Reminds me a lot of how this one guy in my class draws.

November 8th, 2002, 12:49 PM
blackhawk: thanks! um, the last one was 50 minutes i think...the guy standing before that one was 40. not sure about the portraits...

soul: i think the class is really good. i have sean conner, and hes really cool. i would recommend taking him. i think it is actually a lot easier...no master copies and no skeleton drawings. we just have to do one semester long project about anything we want. its cool.

today was the costume carnival and i totally forgot. i woke up at 11:30 and ran down there. it started at 9, so i was totally bummed. i spent most of my time taking pictures and doing a painting...and when i got home my pictures are so pixelated...my digital cam sucks so much balls. i was able to get in 2 quick sketches between poses. i think they are about 10 minutes each or under. not sure.

sean connor is an arrogant fucking cocksucker. all he knows is the names of the bones. take his information on this, but dont listen to any of his drawing advice, half the newbies in this forum could smoke him. i had him for intro to anatomy a few years ago, and let me tell you...take tom marsh or doug....sean once told me that my drawing style "irritated" him. not that i cant take criticism, but it was my first year there, and i think comments like that could potentially be damamging to a young artists ego. luckily i saw some of his personal work at a faculty show and felt alot better when i saw that he sucked. you can know every bone, muscle and tendon in the body, but to teach it from an art standpoint, one should also know how to draw it..my 2 cents-c36

coro: haha, wow i didnt know he was like that. he seemed ok to me. yeah, i had thomas marsh for intro to anatomy and he rocks. he is probably my fav. teacher i have had so far. ive never actually seen any of seans work either. thanks for your comments, i will have to watch out for him then if he starts being an ass. i tried to take marsh again for intermediate anatomy but he is not teaching right now. doug subbed for us one time, and i dont know if he was just having a bad day or what, but he was a total ass. his stuff is good though.

daarken/el coro : Where does that guy teach?

daarken

amphex: he teaches at the academy of art college in san francisco.

Eep. I guess I better keep an eye on Mr. Connor, eh?

I had Lee Ballard for Intro to Anatomy. He's a really cool guy. I think partly because he's really young.. not sure *shrug*. But he let me pass the class even though I really should've failed it! :)

Lee's approach was more from a drawing POV when he taught our class. He'd have the section of the body on the board for that day, he'd have us copy it (w/ names, etc) then we'd just draw for the rest of the day.. but he'd want us to look for that certain bone/muscle on the models.

Man, come to think of it.. I still don't know how I passed that class. Haha

hey, your proportions on that one girl are a lot better this time around. nice work. i should be spending more time at the workshops (i graduated in computer arts a year ago) cuz there's a few models i don't recognize. anyway, any of you SF folks want to get together and draw sometime?

this thread is starting to sound like a conversation at the break area in the illustration building at AAC. It's too funny to hear what everyone thinks of all these teachers I have had. Just for the record I think Sean Connor is fucking hilarious.

Crap, ALL of you go to AAC? Heh, yeah I had Thomas Marsh for figure modelling and Auguste Haboushe for anatomy; I think I've learned more from them than just about everyone else combined.

Daarken, your stuff is shaping up fast. I think you really nailed it with the last girl.

heh, thanks everyone! i was looking back through my older drawings from this class, and i thought it would be fun to post a before and after of some of the same models.

Daarken, could you talk a little bit about your technique on these? i can see that your proportions have definitely gotten better over the past weeks, but do u usually start off with a contour drawing? Structure? or what? I'm very curious as to what goes on underneath your finished drawings...

daarken
December 6th, 2002, 04:53 PM
i start off with getting the whole structure of the head. then i start trying to mass in the shadow shapes and the big areas. if you find all the structure first, then you can drop in the little details at the end and they will be in the right place.

Justin-el coro- so sorry if your ego was hurt or damaged. I don't think you passed my class or showed up or maybe you got a d-- whatever. i don't think I ever said your drawing 'irritated me', just thought you could learn a new trick or 2-but actually after seeing your website-it does irritate me...i guess you're in for the long haul.

hopefully you are doing well here on line --it takes 1 to no one--arrogant that is..

woah crazy! just goes to show that shit sure does get around on the net. nope, im very happy to say thats not one of my old drawings haha. its gotta be seans im assuming. in reading my comments, i cant help but feel like i came off a bit harsh, and i really dont want to come off like a whiny bitch who got my feelings hurt cuz he told me that my style irritated him. oh well i aint hating. its all love. hes not an arrogant cocksucker, he's really not. hes a teacher i didnt click with, and honestly i kind of embarrased at my juvenile behiavior right now. a persons perspective can change a lot in the 3 years since i posted that comment. but...at the same time i think its kind of cool when one of your old teachers finds you on the site you founded, disses you cuz you trashed his teaching style, and THEN backs your argument by posting some of his work in question. goddamn life is so wierd sometimes.-c36
