I have the master collection
Luck me :/
I installed photoshop cs4 and Illustrator cs4 and Illo CS4 is not laggy like photoshop cs 4 when I make strokes.....
Then I uninstalled my PS cs4 and went back to an older one like 7 and cs2
The brush engine in 7 is almost like cs series with a few things missing but oh well you can get the same results.
And what is up with using more of your gfx card to run photoshop now? Cs4 does load faster but painting seems so awful in it.....
anyone feel the same way..
btw adobe the rotate canvas thing like in painter should have been in photoshop like when 5-7 came out lol. This was looooooong over due.

This is a pretty common problem with CS4. It is unknown whether it's computers are being too behind CS4's requirements, or bug in interface. You should stick to CS3 for now. Besides, digital painting has been the same since PS7, so CS4 feels like just a fad.

-Try this : in the preferences/performances/enable opengl adv. settings :
Just uncheck advanced drawing, close and relaunch Cs4.
-You can also disable the thumbnail option in the layers panel.

this is defin. a cs4 issue.
if your brush strokes are laggy then turning off adv. drawing helps, but if you're talking about when you increase the brush size in a painting and it start chugging when you move the pen around (without actually painting) then i've noticed that too.
i'm running vista 64 with ps cs4 64, 8gigs ddr800 (oc'd to 990) and have an nvidia 280 1g ddr3 card. so you think it would scream, but it still lags worse than cs3.
even when rightclicking to open up my brush palette. that takes longer to process than cs3.
it's frustrating and i just hope they work it out soon.

in other word I should stick with CS2 even though I could install CS4 for free from my lab?

Bullshit.
There are plenty of reasons to install new software, especially when the new features can increase your workflow and keep your workspace better organized.
But, with that being said, it would be nice if the lag in CS4 was non-existent, then it would probably be one of the best releases of PS in a LONG time.

I have noticed that speed increases if you go to preferences>cursors>standard.
The stupid one with the little paintbrush from 1990.
Its a distraction at first but by your 3rd painting you probably wont notice.

Lol yeh I noticed that in CS3 but not so much in CS4 - the one thing that is a major improvement in CS4 for me is the brushstokes are finally smooth!! You don't want to know how many days I spent on the phone to Adobe tech, searching thru forums and checking out every setting I could possibly could until finally being told (and realising) PS-CS3 is actually incapable of producing a smooth brushstroke (on my perfectly good enough machine anyway!)... rant... Unfortunately in CS4 that is such a marked improvement that I will probably upgrade my Creative suite - yet more cash just to have the software working as it should! >:{
