Today's topic is: Creature: Banshee.

I think Banshees are the coolest, creepiest, and flat out freakiest things ever! I've had this fascination with them ever since I was very small and first saw "Darby O'Gill and the Little People". Anywho, here's my 45 minute sketch... I think I'll hit this DSG up again before the day is out ;p Can't wait to see the others.

In Irish folklore, the Bean Sidhe ("woman of the hills") is a spirit or fairy who presage a death by wailing. She is popularly known as the Banshee. She visits a household and by wailing she warns them that a member of their family is about to die. When a Banshee is caught, she is obliged to tell the name of the doomed.

It's been about a week since i've last posted on dsg... and I do belive photoshop are holding a grunch against me for neglecting it.
I know she don't look evil... but she has a very EVIL SMILE... that is when she grins :p

Maby i'll refine her a bit more later... aaand maby not.

Hey PJM go to 50megs.com and set up your own account then just use the photo page to dump your work for this forum, its realy easy.

Hey Scumworks I like it. Nobody says it has to be evil. If you read under my banshee I got that from a sight about banshees and if says that she is a ghostly female. I think a delicate ghostly grim reaper is just as good.

I was under the impression that banshees wail before catastrophes and such, so I made a little sequence around that

Thought id do anotherone before I took the trash out. Didnt like the hair on the first one looked to similar to what everyone else is doing.

Hunger_Artist that made me chuckle. Reminds me of ghostbusters with the librarian ghost scene.

My first DSG. Been following for a while though. Love all of the artwork on here. it is so motivating! So motivating I finally motivated myself to the store to buy a tablet. Here is my first try....

Beatnik -The creepy level is way up there on this one.
Brian - I think I like the first one better, all the lines in the darkness.

I sketched out this elaborate composition and said "funk it" and did this.

Phuzion- awesome, and creepy. the lighting makes her look like she's standing in front of the stairway to hell AND heaven at once. despite the fear factor, if i saw her in the streets, i'd still walk up to her and poke her in the boob. i have no choice. it's my duty.

BrianL- "Scully? Stop screaming! X-files isn't going back to the way it was. I'm sorry!" ;)

Crave My Nightmares- a very nice first. looking forward to more.

i don't feel comfortable telling people where to improve, since i have plenty of room for it, too, and no one else is critiquing anybody.. so i'll just Self-Critique
- i've been looking back at this thread a lot today (i have no life.), and i think i figured that my marker technique is just too messy and i'm not thinking enough about where light would fall. the pose is kinda whacky on it too. i was going for awkward, and it went TOO awkward. haha. there's always tomorrow.

This is the ghost of Rhiannon Lahey. In life she was a blessing to the eyes and ears of any observer. The fairest in all the county, she also sang like an angel. Now that once melodious voice pierces the wilderness with its relentless howl as she wanders the land searching for the jealous suitor who murdered her.

http://www3.telus.net/badddspellah/Stuff/Banshee.jpg

I'd be lying if I said Phuzion's bang-on rendition had no influence on me.

Hunger_Artist. Hunger_Artist! Who are you?! You got so much style it veritably leaps of my monitor and pokes me in the eyes!

brianl love the wood-cut aesthetic.

Everybody. Everybody. Ya'll gots the scary imaginations.

Over 'n' out!

scumworks, a little C&C: I know you portrait is that of a ghost but it looks like she's missing the top of her head. Unless I am mistaken and its a cranium-less ghost who walks the earth to steal the craniums of the living!

It's just a line drawing, but may add value and color later, I don't know... but it took walking through soaking wet paths at 10:30 at night to the library and back to bring you the image, so I might as well post it. Here ya go!

Fine Stuff Everyone!

I find it very interesting that so many of them ended up being purpley...
I actually painted this in blue and creamy colours, but landed on this finally.
There was an odd little offshoot tweak that I did that I might post later... I dunno.

http://homepage.mac.com/forumdump/.Pictures/Banshee%201.jpg

I gotta try and do these a little earlier in the evening... I just am so easily distracted. It's when I should be sleeping that I'm able to focus, ha ha.

Here's that Offshoot Pic that I was threatening...

http://homepage.mac.com/forumdump/.Pictures/Banshee%20OFFSHOOT.jpg

Obviously I cranked up the contrast, and screwed around with the blur effect.

Phuzion - Awesome work!

Loblaw - Niiice. My favourite part of it is the foot of the dress.

nBT - Like 'em bothe.

Grimlohk - I dig it. Especially from the ribcage down.

Sapphire - Great face! Has the feeling of an old Faerie Tale illustration.

Loblaw, I think that's the coolest exclamation I've ellicited from anybody -- Thanks!
plaf, yar!
Phuzion, wow thanks!

william you have to have a go at making that work with 3d glasses, then it would be just way to scary!

hmmm have a link somewhere how to do it with 3d images, surely you could use the same principles.

Will dig it up.

Phuzion: You should post here more often. I really dig your style. :)

Hunger_Artist: Love it!

Bob Loblaw: The green wash looks great, good stuff as always.

William B.: I like your first pic, good stuff!

I have a theory about the purple ones, im probably wrong about it but here goes:

The reason so many of them is purple, is that purple is the color you get when blue light hits a red surface. Purple=Moonlight on blood=scary picture.

Purple is also the color most of the western world connects to sickness, death and suffering, or so i was told.

great work all!

nBT
November 19th, 2003, 01:23 PM
i think purple is also the colour of mysticism blue of spirituality and black being close to purple the colour of death

at least i use em that way

Thanks, Mr. Hand, and mega props to you! Your image is spectacular... especially the first one. There's something sickening about that reddish hue tinted with green, and those teeth are so well done. How long did this take you?

Still screwing around with those textures. Dang I need a lot of practice. I probably should have remembered that I have some Silent Hill images with great texture use for this kinda thing...

Man I'm late...did my thumbs in class but then I got invited downtown for some drinks, and then we went to karaoke. First time doing drunk karaoke, and it is every bit as fun as they say it is, hahaha!

Damn you guys draw some seriously scary ladies...of DOOM!
