Monkey King: Bull Demon

Just a concept sketch of Bull Demon from Monkey King. I'd appreciate some comments on how to improve the painting/coloring. My friend already commented on improving the highlights. Done in painter. Well, I'm no great artist, so for what it is worth, here is my advice : Try imagining a more precise location where the light comes from (using one source works, using two sources is better and more if you're feeling blod) :) and stick to them when placing lights and shadows. And remember light can be coloured :).

Here is what I’ll do. Normally I would start a painting from a dark background. This way I’ll only have to pick up the highlights and would not worry I would leave out any grey spots. This also lets you see clearer and better than a white background.

I think its lacking highlights here which is making it look flat. I used a warm reflected light for the body to bring up the form. I've chosen a slightly different tint? to pick up the highlights for the face, chains, armor and hair. I see there is a lot of grey which tone down the painting. You can use more saturated colours for the focus like the face.etc Sometimes I'll try thinking about negative and positive space. I use some greys in the background to bring up the form as well.

Nice character, I even learn something myself from doing this paint over. Keep it up. :)

thanks oddo! Lighting seems to be a problem for me...I don't think of light in terms of colors sometimes...thanks!

I would love to see a professionally done image of the Monkey King fighting the Bull Demon, with the Bull Demon designed as an amalgamation of Rob Bottin's design for 'Darkness' in the film LEGEND and a real Bull(slightly smaller horns of course, without making it look like a Minotaur). I'm currently seeking 3-4 good artists who would love to tackle some designs/scenes for a proposed film I'm developing about the Monkey King. More later....

aww, I think he's cute, haha. ^^ Really nice job! One thing though; his mule/nose looks a bit too pig'ish?
