Hi, this is my first post with my artwork so it looks like I'm a lurker no longer. I'm finishing up college right now and this is part of my senior project. I thought I'd try and kill two birds with one stone and enter this in the Fan Art competition over on Arreat Summit. But it took me too long so it looks like it's going to be for my prof. and you guys. Hope you like it.

If there's any experienced artists out there that want to give me some solid crits. That'd be nice. Otherwise, a few oohs and aahs would be okay too :) Posting after that street soccer concept is a doozie!

-Heh, heh, sorry Sinistar, the bow was just something I made up. But I tried to base the character art on things from the Diablo world. Hence, the Barbarian, Amazon, and Assassin. Also, in the background is a megademon and the skeleton in the foreground is a doom knight. I used screenshots for references. I made up the dead monster by the Assassin, he's kind of transparent so I'm thinking some sort of Shapeshifter. I had fun with this, it made me Nostalgic!

Davey Jones, what school do you go to, just out of curiosity?

-Joshua, I go the Evergreen State College in Olympia Wa. Traditionally it's not known for it's digital art programs because it's a liberal arts school. But the coursework is flexible enough to form your own studies. My intrests lie in computer art, so for my degree I've dabbled in several aspects of game development. I've done Modelling, Animation, Texturing, and now this quarter I'm working on 2d Concept Art.
I graduate in December, I'm pretty excited about that!

This is a cool concept. And you pull it off, but there are many ways that you could make it lots better.
First, the picture is very static. Your composition doesn't imply any motion. You have lots of vertical and horizontal lines( which take away from the illustion of motion) Your characters aren't bad, but they need a bit of tweaking to add more motion.
Second, you have too many elements in the picture with no strong focus. Right now, the guy warrrior gets the most attention, but the other two women and the castle in the background get almost as much attention. You need to decide on your dominant element, and then take attention away from the other elements.
Third, your perspective is off. It's not really "wrong", but it's not stong enough. So the feeling of depth isn't very strong.
Lastly, you should do thumbnails and studies before you tackle a complex picture like this.. It may seem to take away from the spontaneity, but it's essential if you want to produce good artwork.( work out the compositional problems small, so you can concentrate on your drawings when you get to the final piece.)

Nothing like some Humble Pie to finish off Thanksgiving!
-Riq, thanks for the post. Reading what you wrote and looking over the picture I can see alot of your observations.
I especially agree with the focal point, alot of people comment on the Amazon, but I think she appears too bright. The downside is, if I bring the eye to the Barbarian in the Foreground, it will leave the majority of the picture with less detail, and a smaller area with. This problem is created by where the viewer is positioned. If it was lower that would give the Barbarian more presence.
As far as the perspective, I think a reason it doesn't appear as dynamic is because the foreground runs more horizontally but behind the Assassin, it runs into the distance.
I think I may take this into Photoshop and see what I can do with it. The problem being when you have a piece with so many details, it becomes more difficult to change as the process continues. I can appriciate the suggestion to nail the concept with thumbnails etc. in the early stages as it will save time later on.
