P.O.W.! Challenge 16
Deadline: Sunday, November 16, 2008, 11:59 pm anywhere in the world.

Topic: A Walk in the Park

This one should give you a lot of room to play. For those of you not used to US slang, "a walk in the park," other than the obvious, can also mean something that should be so easy to do, it's the equivalent to "a walk in the park." In most cases, that's the first cue that everything will probably go straight to hell... :P You can interpret the art any way you wish, and the more creatively, the better. Any media. B&W or Color.

You can present your solution as a minimum of TWO to a tentative maximum of SIX pages which adhere to standard comic specs as below...and, yes, you can have the first or last (or both) as a splash page if you want. You can go to additional pages without asking if you have a decent idea that requires it--just don't get too extreme on page counts

Standard Comic Book Size:

--Trim size: 6 5/8" x 10 1/4"
--Live art area: 6" x 9"
--Bleed size before trimming: 6 7/8" x 10 1/2" (1/8" in all directions)

This thread will be the place you ask questions on this challenge, trash talk, post WIPs and post your final art. See the READ THIS FIRST thread for all specs.

Good luck.

P.O.W.! Challenge 17 will be posted before Sunday Midnight, November 16, 2008.

A little note here for all of you who have supported the P.O.W.! Challenges...

I'm very surprised and HAPPY by the number of people who came through and actually started something for this last challenge. At least I know we're not wasting our time here...thank you all for that. Those of you who didn't get a chance to finish exactly the way you wanted to, remember there is a sticky section where you can post your stuff when you do get it up to speed.

I have an idea for this! =D So hopefully my itching to make a comic will finally manifest into something substantial. :geekg:

I'll try to draw this one too. Still thinking on this topic.

I'd also like to announce that like in previous challange I'm not really doing this to compete with anybody. I just want to take my first steps in comics and have fun.

We actually don't compete against each other here all that much, f'... I like to keep it a kind of "look what I did--how'd you do?" kind of thing. I figured this would be better than the blood-guts-and-gore war that the other Challenges sometimes become because very few people here have actually ever done a real comic past second grade, and I'm more interested in getting them to try than I am getting them to win another bowling trophy... :P

I might actually be able to do this one finally myself--I have an idea that won't require me to do heavy comp manipulation to make it work...

Wee! I caught this one in a timely fashion. Gonna try for this one.

If you click on the Community Activities button you can see that all the other activities are just "_OW" but this one is "Panels of the Week Challenge" That's because it's hard enough to tell a sequential story as it is. If you finished this activity you won. You won experience.

I didn't even draw panels as a kid. But I'm here learning because it's a great opportunity. Every time, "Could I or couldn't I?" becomes more like "Can I or can't I?" because I learn what it takes. That's an awful lot of the battle. Eventually it will be just "I can."

Ok..making a go of this one as well. I've been slacking off too much lately.

Nov 16! Cool, I'll actually be able to give myself some time to do this one! Count me in!

Been playing a lot of Fallout 3 lately and its very heavily influenced my take on this topic.
Its basically a two page snippet showing a drifter travelling the destroyed landscape. Walking through what is left of a childrens playground (park?). He picks up a child's tattered teddy bear (symbolic of the innocence destroyed by the violent world). I am struggling at the moment to try not to have a sniper try to pick him off as i don't think its necessary and will also mean more pages. :)
Anyway, here's my character concept for the drifter. Gonna start on the layout roughs next.

I just started tonight. Mine's about a guying getting some oranges for dessert...

Redfrog: Aw dammit, I was going to do the exact same thing! I'm going to go and sulk now...:(

Ilaekae - Ha, mine sounds ridiculously over the top compared to yours. I think sometimes i should think more appropriate themes. I just can't help the desire to put in weapons and destruction. One day :)

Kmadden2004 - we should be able to do the same story/theme/take on the the topic. I don't think it'll be as bad as two girls turning up to a party in the same dress. Our execution of the story will most probably be different and our characters certainly will so there shouldn't be a prob. Besides, this is for a bit of fun. Its not like our livelihoods are on the line here. I actually can't wait to see your take on a similar theme. :)

Here's my super rough layouts. Plan to do the proper pencils next.

Oh...didn't I mention the nude landscapes and the talking birds? :)

Redfrog: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaw, mine even begins with an almost identical first frame!!! Aaaargh!

Oh well, I'll press on and keep hammering away at it for the moment. It's only two pages this week, I'm afraid I've got about three commissions going at the moment (isn't it great, I've only been officially working as an illustrator for about six weeks and I'm up to my ears with work!:steph:) so two pages is all I can manage... but they are a pretty damn good couple of pages!:teeth:

Just finished the refined pencils for the two pages. Stoked that i could get em done before i go back to work tomorrow.

Ilaekae - can't wait to see those taking birds and nude landscapes!

Can't wait to see some more entries people. Feelin a lil lonely on this topic at the moment.

Love what you're doing, Froggy. Don't sweat the loneliness...it's normal here. I don't even do pencils like you do--I work directly into Illustrator with no pencils, and do the pages in random order. If I can get a few finished early, I'll post them so you don't feel so lonely, but they won't make any sense... :P

Here's my final entry for this week's challenge. Just two pages this week, too busy for any more. Wish I had a little more time to add a couple more pages;

It's a little early because I'm going to be away from my computer this weekend. I can't help but feel it's a little rushed too, but it's the best I can get it for the moment.

I got my breakdowns done last night...I hope I have time to present a finished product....

I like what's happening here...

If anyone needs a bit more time, just speak up. It can be a couple of days if it will help. I think adding another week will probably be a bit much, though...

I'll get the third page done today, bringing me up to introduction of the idea of going to the park (so at least my pages will make sense). I have too much work pressure to do the fourth page even with a couple days extension the way it looks right now.

To anyone who needs it, you've got to Tuesday night. I just put up Challenge 17, but I won't be able to do the poll for Challenge 16 until Tuesday afternoon. Got another doctor's appointment to see how my broken foot is healing that will keep me gone all Monday.

Anyone who posts by Tuesday sometime is in...

AND I have FOUR pages done out of eight on mine--you're all going down in flames, especially if I can at least get two more done. Nyahh Nyahh!

these are the finals...until I figure out some decent dialogue that is. Most of it is designed not to use it, anyways...

I'm back...more or less. My apologies for not getting the poll for # 16 up yet--it will be up later today (Friday).

My little accident with my foot recently apparently did a lot more damage than we figured, so I was ordered off my feet to bed for the last five days. That meant no computer. I'm moving around with a cane now temporarily, so I should be able to catch up quick.

Sorry again...I fucked up big time. Trying to get up and around too soon set me back on my ass. I think things are okay now. I'm posting the three panels I had completely done before the deadline below. They're part of an 8-pager, but the other pages weren't far enough along to post. I hope to finish them this week if I can stay at the comp.

I'm setting up the poll for this batch right now. Should be up in an hour or so (Wed 2 am)...

Arttorney, I'm going to drop you a PM sometime today.

Everybody, thanks for your patience.

Redfrog, I really sincerely apologize. I somehow got the impression that yours wasn't done yet for some reason. I am sorry. I'm going to see if I can redo the poll to include yours and extend the time...
