Hello everyone! wow. I haven't added anything to this in a LONG time. I was even gonna start another SB and found this one I already had up! Well, here's some stuff - some LOST character studies and some other random sketches.

Sanejack,
I really enjoy your work. Where did you pick up your style? Who have been some of your favorite artists?
Sanejack
August 28th, 2009, 11:28 PM
p sage, goma14, nancy_kelpie, Eva K - Thx for the compliments everyone! Much appreciated! :)
Diabolique - Thx! Yeah, I've been using Photoshop for a while now, but I've only recently started to really explore different painting techniques - I'm still really new at color, but every now and then I'll paint a piece and post it on here and you guys can give me tips and feedback!
yoooee - I'm glad u like my stuff! some say my art has alot of Disney and Warner Bros. animation influences, 'cause that's what I grew up on - two artists' work I REALLY love and admire are Glen Keane and Florian Satzinger. They have such an amazing style that lends itself well to illustration and animation - plus, Satzinger's work is so imaginative! I love it.
Here's s'more shtuff:
BTW, something I really struggle with is just figuring out what to draw - I'm constantly looking for ideas and inspiration for what to draw, and if anyone out there would like to see me draw something in particular or have some cool ideas for characters and would like to see me design something for ya, I'd be MORE than happy to! I love to hear other people's ideas and concepts and I REALLY thrive on direction!

Great update, btw.
As far as ideas go... I know my mind likes to take things it sees and combine those things with totally unrelated things. There's never really a "pure" new idea... it's always some kind of cobbling of two or more old ideas.
Maybe that will get you a jump start.
Sanejack
August 29th, 2009, 12:28 AM
p sage - I know what you mean - something I've gotten in the habit of doing is going through old sketchbooks and re-drawing old sketches by giving them a fresh new take - it really helps to see how you've improved as well and how differently you approach a drawing this time around.

Nice stuff! Definitely seeing the Disney influence -- and glad to see it used well. If you're still looking for something to draw, I've got some characters/creatures that I haven't yet been able to do justice to:
Whimsy:
A fairy princess of sorts, charming and temperamental. Her wings are a bit like butterfly wings, but with more parts, some of them elongated, swirling and spiraling. Her costume includes a mask on a similar theme, various bits of jewelry, and many-layered, flower-like skirts that hide her feet as she hovers. A remarkable sight, altogether, but perhaps a bit... much.
Weavers:
Elegant and alien, centaur-like insect/humanoid creatures, with four insect-like legs and four human-like arms. Their faces are elongated, fey. Sometimes they use their long fingers to weave webs like dreamcatchers, strung with beads like gems, or stars, or worlds. Sometimes they spin, unravelling bits of reality for the fiber.
Baku:
A Japanese mythological creature, like a mix between a lion, a tiger, and an elephant -- with horns for good measure. They use the trunk to eat nightmares. They're definitely the good guys, but they also need to look predatory enough to tackle those nightmares, and (somehow) not too goofy. Despite the trunks.
These are all concepts for a 2D adventure game I'm cobbling together. If you'd like to draw any of them, I'd be delighted. If not, I'll still be hanging around to see what you do next.

ohh, never heard of florian satzinger before, but after looking...damn,he sure has some nice stuff.
scribbles are looking good... me,i'm rather fascinated by pilgrim outfits (i think it stems from addams family 2 (http://www.addamsfamily.com/addams/chair.jpg)),because of their geometrical simplicity (atleast for females)....so perhaps a cute pilgrim girl? :)

@Morgan_R - sorry it took me so long to put these up! Here are some sketches on the Whimsy fairy - she's a bit older looking, and the clothing's a bit revealing :) I don't know what you had in mind, but for some reason, I kept coming back to these designs for her wings and jewelry. Very leaf-y-like. I hope you like them! I'm gonna see what I can come up with for the Weavers.
@Jason Scanlon - shane glines? hmm.. I think so - I don't remember! must've been a long time ago. I'm glad u like my stuff, tho! I'll keep postin' as often as I can.
thx for the CC everyone! Here are some concepts I did for @Morgan_R - I would colored it, but still being a novice in that area I didn't wanna screw it up - I'll leave it to you, @Morgan_R! ..or anyone else who wants to give it a shot!

Really cool work, strong characters and nice, flowing style. On the fairy in post 33, be careful, though. All the figure (pose, hair, wings) has some flow, some movement, but the small leaves in the skirt make a very regular pattern, that kind of "stops" this flow. It could help to designate some main flow lines before starting to draw. That way, the drawings would look more consistent.
Anyway, nice sketches!
Keep up the good work man.

thx for the comments everyone!
@p sage - hey thx! I would love to do this professionally and work for a studio or something, but unfortunately I don't have alot of work experience or a degree. So I guess right now I kinda just do freelance - I'll do commissions! ;)
I'm actually looking into going back to school for a BA in game art & design. I would love to do character design for games someday! That would be fun!
@Carnifex - Yes! The deliciously evil Ludovica... hallelujah! haha. I LOVE Barbucci's work. Sky Doll is such a great story with an AMAZING visual style. This would never happen, of course, but can you imagine a story like Sky Doll (adult themes and all) being made into a full-length animated movie with the same style and production values of a Disney film?? That would blow my mind. It would have to be rated R, of course, and American audiences wouldn't be ready for it. "Hmm, that looks like a Disney animated movie for kids! ...wait.. what...WHAT THE HELL IS THIS MOVIE ABOUT?? RATED R?! CAN THEY DO THAT?!?" haha. I can dream, though.
I might post some more drawings of Sky Doll stuff in the future, btw.
@Abrodos - I know EXACTLY what you mean! I was struggling with that when I was drawing the dress, I just didn't know what to do about it - I couldn't figure out how to make it look more natural and flowing. I just started drawing the leaves on her in random places, and u can totally tell. I never thought about using some flow lines first to make the leaf-skirt look more believable! Clothes are something I definitely need to work on and I appreciate the insight and help - thx!
I just picked up X-Men Origins:Wolverine and started playing around with some Victor sketches while watching :)

A long time ago I had a thread where anyone could post a drawing and I would try to draw it in my style - I called it "Sanejack-it!" - I wanted to try that again! It's sort of like a one-way sketchtrade, but it really helps me practice and helps improve my skills by having to draw different subjects - and it's really fun, hopefully for both parties! So if you like my stuff and would like to post something or send me something for me to tackle, I'd love to give my take on it and see what comes out!

woo-hoo, page 3! I'm gettin' there... :)
@Zombie_Rich - Thank you sir! I'm glad you like my stuff! Yeah, I'm always looking for fun characters I can do fan-art of - and I LOVE the Sky Doll story and characters!
@Carnifex - you're absolutely right about Lodovica being a bit more pudgy - the first of the three sketches I did was the one on the left, and I made her way too skinny. So I tried adding some weight on the other two, but she still came out too skinny! I'm gonna have to do some study sketches and post 'em once I get the look that's right - Lodovica's physical attributes are that she's shorter and a bit thicker, whereas Noa is taller and slimmer. Good eye! You are a true Sky Doll fan, my friend :)
I hadn't heard of Blacksad before, but I just checked it out and was reading about it and looking at the artwork, and it looks awesome!! Very cool style and I love the characters! very Sky Doll-ish! I'm gonna have to get my hands on some of the books - thx for the heads up!

Man, your character designs are so awesome! I love the style, the influence, and of course it is 100% my cup of tea. I even really like the wolf-like characters! I'm already subscribed to this thread.
Although I was kind of itching to say, it's a bit of a shame that while you draw guys very well, with lots of character and variety, all of your women really look exactly the same from their construction, and have no actual variety. Not to go "draw me this draw me this!!" but it'd be nice to see something besides Tinkerbell wearing different skin suits.
But anyway, cheers, and I really do look forward to seeing more!

@GammaRadiation-X - Thx so much! And I get what you're saying about all my girlies looking alike :) Others have commented the same thing, and I think I've come a long way in trying to adapt to different styles and not always using the same "formula" - but I'm still working on it!
But then I guess I have to ask, at what point is it considered a "style" as opposed to drawings that all look-alike because they've been constructed and drawn the same way with all the same attributes? The whole 'using the same "cookie-cutter" model with just different skins and slight changes here and there' could in fact be applied to some great artists' work, but most people would instead just say that's their "style". Here are some examples of some artists' work I really like so you see what I mean:
1.Ashleigh Hetrick 2.Chris Sanders 3.Dean Yeagle

I think any style can cover any model. The thing is, with the general "western cartoon" style, people don't draw women outside of being incredibly sexy, oddly proportioned, or really fat. It could very, very well be done. There are tons of models of all varieties in real life. I don't know why people don't do it (But I'd absolutely love to see your life drawings, though ;) ) except it seems that people only want to draw what they'll fap to. I can kind of understand it, but the implication that 50% of the human population can't have unique character designs I do find slightly disturbing.
Style is like handwriting to me. I think Chris Sanders is really talented, but his women characters still look dull to me because he refuses to draw anything but. Same applies to the other two artists (I'm not really familiar with them, but I did a quick Google Image Search.)
I think there's a really good little section in "Making Comics" by Scott McCloud that can phrase this in a better way than I can.
Anyway, what I think you should do is draw as many different people around you IRL and then caricature or draw them "realistically" in your style. Makes great practice and is really fun.

@GammaRadiation-X - good point. I totally see what you mean - It is hard to sometimes break free of drawing the same things and in the same way. Arriving at one's refined "style" while being able to vary their art and subjects is tough for many artists, especially when it comes to the cartoony/disney style.
But great tip about trying to draw different types of people and subjects around me in my style! I rarely use reference for my drawings, and I know that's a bad thing :( I really want to get better at drawing environments, animals, etc. and not just girls! They're just so cute and fun to draw and exaggerate proportionally :)
Also, I will try to post some life drawings soon as well!
thx for the insight!
@Victor B - glad u like my stuff! and hey thx for the heads up on the Blacksad release! I have the marvel release of the SkyDoll hardcover, but I had no idea they were doing a SkyDoll Sketchbook!! your animal characters are a lot of fun to look at and they give a feel of their personality in each drawing and gets one excited to bring them to life through animating. lol.

@cAstAwAyLOVER - yes! I would LOVE to do character design for animation! How does ones get a job doing that, though? Hej Jack! Really like your work, you've got a great style. Impressive poses and characters altogether! Especially like your more "edgy" works.
Looking for inspiration? Then we would be more than happy if you could support our team.
We are a group of students making an animated short about a 19th century author who sells his soul because he lacks inspiration. It would be great if you would design 2 characters for us so we could model them in 3d and awaken them to life in a cool film.
I will send you fully detailed descriptions of the characters and a script if you're interested... Would be nice to welcome you aboard... Regards... Matt

that looks like fun! I think I'll try it out next :)
@cAstAwAyLOVER - yes! I would LOVE to do character design for animation! How does ones get a job doing that, though? I would imagine getting a degree in animation would be a start - I tried that, but there was too much 3d stuff involved - I was more interested in just drawing :) I went back to school to study graphic design, but I've not finished because of $$. Eventually, when I do finish, I hope to get a job where I'm doing SOMETHING with my drawing :)
thx for the C&C everyone! I will be posting more sketches shortly.
Its not necessary for you to have a degree in animation if 3D is not your thing. However, it doesn't hurt to know a bit of character animation in 2D if you are designing the characters. A lot of schools out there are too focused on 3D and don't even teach 2D. I go to SCAD and I'm majoring in animation, and unlike other schools we have a program where we can learn both if we want. But, if its not your thing and you just want to design characters, there is no specific way to go about it or a degree. You just have to love it enough to go after it and just draw draw draw..lol. :)
Keep up the good work! :D

I love your drawings alot. Good amount of character and action! Great gestures. May I ask about your mental attitude while drawing? Do you put yourself in the shoes of your characters? Do you fully comprehend the impulses and feelings that put the characters where they are? If so, have you practiced anything in particular to obtain that skill?
Kind Regards.

Victor B - hey thx again for the heads up on the Sky Doll book!
cAstAwAyLOVER - thx for the great advice! yeah, I know now that there are lots of great schools out there that focus more on just 2d and illustration, but I've invested so much money and time and credit hours at the Art Institute (an unfinished Graphic Design degree) that I really have to go back there to finish it - my credits won't really transfer to other schools. But, still, I can't afford to go to ANY school right now anyway, so I guess it doesn't matter :(
But, you're right about just pursuing my art anyway - I don't need a degree to do my own thing and get it out there myself, right? I've actually always wanted to make a children's book and get it published, but I'm just not a writer. I do, however, think I could make a really cool "How To Draw" book for kids! I know I'm a nobody as an artist, but I think it's something I would really enjoy doing and I think I could be good at it. Truthfully, I've also been wanting to make a video podcast on how I draw for such a long time, but I don't have a camera. :(
Anyway, thanks for the encouragement, and I certainly will continue to draw, draw and draw no matter what!
kaktuzlime - wow, great question! thank you so much for the kind words, first of all - second, I honestly don't think much about the characters themselves - what they're thinking, feeling, going through. I guess I should be, tho! maybe it will help me improve as an artist! I'm sure it would help out alot more if I were using the characters for a story I'm writing or a comic or something. I have studied acting and how to convey emotion in a character's face and expressions (Glen Keane is a MASTER at conveying emotion in a character when animating!) - but honestly, I think the main thing on my mind when I'm drawing anything, is making sure the drawing has appeal - making sure I'm using the most appealing pose or expression or overall look. I guess that's the reason why I didn't pursue traditional animation after quitting the 3d either - I didn't want to keep drawing the same thing over and over, and having lots of inbetween drawings that maybe aren't as appealing as the key frames. This is why my interests kinda started to lean towards illustrating and creating children's books or comics - but again, the problem is that I'm just not a very good writer or storyteller :( But anyway, great question, thx for the feedback, and sorry for rambling alot! :)
Kristo Novo - hey thx! That Blacksad pic wasn't mine tho - it's from the comic :)
Thx to everyone for the C&C! I haven't been able to post any new sketches lately (or work on alwaysacid's project either) because I've been working more hours at my PT job, finishing unpacking (I just moved), and getting over a nasty cold :( But I will have more time very soon to post s'more stuff, so thx for checking in! I appreciate everyone's comments and thx again for visiting my sb!
see you soon

How would you classify your art style? I have received many different views; some find it reminiscent of Disney, or of Spumco. Personally, although some aspects of Spumco art styling is there, and it does indeed seem to draw from some Animated Disney techniques, I don't like overly categorizing it into such restrictive art profiles. If you could name your art style as you personally see it or as it is known more broadly, it would be greatly appreciated. Whatever this style is called, is one of my favorites and your Art is very inspiring for my limited artistic capability. I hope some day I could draw in a similar manner.

Some random sketches - some inking and coloring practice on one of them... lines done in Illustrator (first time and it's VERY tedious!) and color in PS. I'm still struggling with color and light, but I'll get there - just need to be patient and keep practicing!

nice to see stuff again! quite sexy. good work with the digi inking too, infact very good by the look of it. for the colouring, maybe you should go with harder shadows? you got em lined out in your sketch already,so why not try them cell-shading style? :)

Carnifex: yeah I think the inking in Illustrator turned out ok, but the color I'm still having trouble with - I wanted to use that technique you're talking about, but I don't know how to do it right and I'm afraid I'll screw it up! I never know where to put all the right shadows and color combos. know of any good tutorials for that style of coloring?

Hey SJ thought id recommend a good dvd set for learning some of the colour techniques.
There are a couple dvds showing various methods, such as realism, anime style, , comic-book style etc.
The link to the site: http://www.digitalarttutorials.com/
Go to this page to preview some of the lessons: http://www.digitalarttutorials.com/previews.php
I think they have a couple of free tutorials available for download off their website.
Anyways just thought this might be helpful to you :)

@kaktuzlime - thx! coming from you that's a huge compliment! I wish I were half as good at painting as you are :)
@Ricardo Robles - thank you so much!
@Carnifex - I know, everyone tells me I should use more hard shadows - but hard shadows scare me! I'm always afraid I'll get them wrong - do you know of any good tutorials for correctly using hard shadows? If I could master them, then the "cel-shaded" look would really be complete!
@The_Show - I'm glad you liked my LOST sketches! I'm obsessed with LOST... and that's an understatement!! The finale totally blew my mind and I think the show will be remembered as one of the best shows in television history.

nice, dynamic drawings, I like them - just be careful that you don't reuse that one-eyebrow-up, one-eyebrow-down on half of you characters
(it's one of those expressions that is overused in cartoony things but rare in real life)

attractive disney style, but try to draw the feet of your characters more often. in a lot of your drawings i see no feet.. and some figures aren't well balanced.

I'm absolutely in love it your stuff. I'm a huge fan of styles like yours, and it's something I hope to incorporate into my work. Skydolls is by far one of my favorite comics/styles on the face of the planet.
Any tips, or thoughts on what goes into the making and stylization of your work? At the moment i'm trying to get some of the science of anatomy/drawing down before diving into heavy stylization. Don't know if that's the right way, but it seems to be chugging along.
