youre work is very professional and youre style is very marketable....youre working with 3D? wha....
You have some serious talent. I think you are already there as far as cocept art goes. If you can do bad ass life drawings you are WELL on youre way to getting a concept job. I envy youre faces! please keep posting :)
I have a question...do you know if its easier to get a job doing 3D work over 2D work in the game/entertainment industry?

cateaic
November 24th, 2003, 05:07 PM
Thats good that you got youre foot in the door with doing 3D while getting a chance to build on youre 2D as well. Im sure you will learn a ton from youre co-workers...sounds like youre working with an awesome team. You sound really dedicated to youre work so im sure you'll do just fine in the industry.
Aww yes now that makes sense that there would be more 3D jobs out there.
I definately agree with you on knowing "the basics". Thats what it all comes down too..I think its how you can expand on those basics that gets you the job.
That first speed painting of the girl is my favorite i like the colors, you nailed that one...youre really pushing youreself with the life drawing stuff. I think thats the most important concept to grasp. Looking forward to more stuff =)

I really love the concepts but if you don't mind my suggesting, I think that you should try doing some clothing with more varied themes. Everything is sorta modernized or futuristic and it would be cool if you had some more traditional designs. Keep up the good work though, your characters are great.

killing.people
December 29th, 2003, 04:36 PM
i enjoy your digital painting sketches. is there any good tips to be aware of for blocking in color like you do? - i have not really activly persued such a study, i will have to. you have inspired me to dabble on this technique, it is a very different way than i work.

when you create a painting like this, are you going all over the place? - or are you growing from areas, how i tend to work.

a problem i think i have is that i will start in one area, paint and paint and define, and then it will spread from that point like a spider's bruise. what makes me think this is a bad way of doing things is because it takes control from me - everything i am painting is set in detail and i dare not paint over it. i have bad judgment, not knowing where to go, knowing well is enough, and when i need to push an area.

my questions are always vague, its hard for me to think of questions when i want to talk.

December 29th, 2003, 06:05 PM
awesome steps xia. though you break it down simply i know how hard it really is....

thanks for the walk through though!!

colour is great

love your latest painting.

you dont have to finish them always, that would be no fun! who needs nitty details anyways unless u want a finished piece, though its finished with a blotch of paint if u want it to be.

keep up the paintings i love these!

very kind of you, i love looking at your steps in these paintings and seeing how much freedom you have throughout your process. this was very enlightening. i appreciate you taking the time to share your process with me and others - i love seeing these - i see in your paintings selflessness and patience, which i aspire for. for how long you stay thinking about the relationships in your painting meks me think about how much thought i put in these aspects of paintings (which is barely at all).

cool.

xia, I'm by no means an anime "fan" but your angels look very nice. I admire how you achieve a proper looking anatomy with so few lines.

Your self portraits are also full of character.

As for the paintings, yes, it's hard and you still have a way to go - however, looks like your getting there. Ever thought about blending the tones a bit more?

I think he just recently broke up with his gf or something. As you can see, waiting for emails takes up most of my time here at work (: Back to building animal shelters I guess.

i must say your work from life is fannn-tastic. i love the energy your gestures have and you're really good at capturing light and shadow in the longer drawings.
i do think that the concept stuff gets too cartoony though. i think you'd do a lot better to implement your life drawing techniques in with that to give them more life. don't get me wrong, they're nice drawings and all, they just lack the energy and pinache (sp?) that your work from life has.

but all in all, very nice work none the less

nice work xia, that head shot is tight.
I really like your gestures and I think there is some of that you could bring into your more detailed figure drawings, dont be afraid to make bold lines and increase the value. Some areas of absolute black would help kick that up (could just be the scan)

I know its been said, but I love those gestures, they have so much rhythym and harmony. did the models actually do that acrobatic stuff? thats cool...anyways I think you should use some of those twisting poses as a jump off for a character concept!

Im sure ive said this b4 but ill say it again, your quick gesture sketches r what i like the most, youve got a good feel for proportion, weight and form which always wins out in my books...Id personaly like to see you build a drawing from those gesture sketches,I know theyll turn out great..

Looks like my host is haveing tech probs..maybe it will work if you try again later. I really like that grainy look you got going in the blue ones. How often you going to drawing usually? I was going a couple times a week but the last month or so the school lab I snuck into was closed..finally got to go again last night. Maybe I will post something if I get a good one. Youre gestures are nuts. I dont really like anything I do unless I get 30 min or more on it. I guess I should work on that.

steak-tron
March 4th, 2004, 12:38 PM
nice work dude, it's a good idea to keep trying to capture the gesture in a finished drawing. It's just not as successful because you're not as familiar with it. My illustration teacher tells our class that the gesture needs to be at the core of all of your drawings. The form, structure and emotional impact all hinge on the underlying scribbles.

I find that I can't capture something great I did in a tiny thumb bigger allot of the time. There is some strange part of your brain you have to turn off when things start to go awry, I guess my point is keep doing what your doing. Those animations style headshots of the girl are my favorite - they have lot o' emotion and the figures are moving. My only suggestion is maybe to try simplifing a natural form instead of making the characters look like that particular animation style. then you'll have your own style-o-anime grounded in reality.

keep er up dude.

We just shipped a milestone, so it was hecktick at work. So far there is no opportunity at this job for any character work, so I have to make monsters and demons and guys with axes at home, in my huge amounts of free time. Snowboarding and beer drinking last night. What kinda stuff you doin at your job? I havnt modeled a character since my last job. I miss it. Heres some recent work I posted. All pshop, I think it shows, but it was fun. Let me know what you think. http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=19961

wow. your gestures are among the best on conceptart.org i really mean that too man, im pretty critical when it comes to the figure(far from perfect myself, but then it's always easier to see someone ELSE'S mistakes, right?)

there's a big change in the confidence from your figure drawings to your color pieces. they almost look as if they're from two different people. but i can tell just from looking at the first colored ones to the newest your grasp of color is definitely improving

your character designs are very fun, too

Wow.

Just trying to work as hard as I can, and gettin slowed down too much. I wish I did characters at my job. Its weighing on me. I finally got a nice tablet for my home, so I can work away. I got about 20 drawings in line to paint. Do those paintings I did have too much black in them to you? People been telling me I shouldn't paint that way: with a black and white image set to multiply, and then paint colors underneath. What do you think? Looks like you just go straight to color.

xia, I was looking at your coloured peaces and i was wondering how you can draw on a Painter or a Adope PS programm that well, have you got one of those mouse pens? or do you use a mouse?

I was wondering because I seem to be smoking alot more when colouring stuff in with PS and get frustrated, atm I dont dare to play much with colour like you have in the resent sketches.

and figure drawing , and they are right,
its awesome , i would like to know what
media you used on the first line drawings
in this thread ???? is it a brush or marker ???

And about your characters what i like the
most is the contrast in their form and
concept .... the Panda who usually is a cute
character is carried in a different manner,
great , and your girl characters who are slim
and nice ,, contrast with the huge and rude
panda ...... :) :)

just my point of view,

and about these last
color works just one complain, it seems
that you give importance to everything
in the drawing , with brights everywhere
BUT
i can see you know the theory you just
need to land the theory more to
the works .... i dont even
have the ability to do these kind
of works, congratulations :D :D

and maybe the most close forms, more
saturated and behind with more washed
color ... . . i dont know i dont know

just my personal point of view

UNBELIEVABLE! These pics are super.
I found your game's website(i always forget the name :P). Those screens are fukn badass. I did 4 backflips and kicked myself in the head when I saw those. Even awesomer than the stuff in pc gamer. Coolest environments I can remember, great freakin colors, really creative. Our E3 build got sent off a week and a half ago. Ur pencil sketches of women are absolutely fantastic in my opinion, i love the way you draw so little and make it so much, a few lines a few shadows and the rest is all suggested, they all look like those old picture with too much light. Excellent work. Keep posting real life sketches!

Gaboartpage>> Thanks for the comment and critique. Your opinion is highly value here. Yes, I tend to sometimes get muddy in painting and sometimes too saturate...still trying to find my way to enlightenment. As for the first gesture post, I used mechanical brush.."Tombo Brush". They are easy to carry around and disposible. I try real brushes some time but they are pain in the butts...cleaning, mixing ink and all.
Thanks a lot.

oi! your gesture drawings rock a house party! I esp like the quick ones. your pencil (or charcoal or conte crayon) is like "whoosh, whish, whazam! there, I'm done. who's your daddy?" that is, of course, if your drawing utensil talks and asks rhetorical questions like "who's your daddy?"
I've checked out your stuff before, but this is the first time I've commented.
These gestures are so good. It's like 5 strokes = super incredible gesture drawing. nice. noice, even.

xia
June 14th, 2004, 03:22 PM
legacy & Van>> Thanks :chug:

dakoscwash>> Thanks, I don't usually render sketch like that anymore...but I guess I felt like it at the time. I feel that...it takes too much time for me. I love short cut like speedpainting and such. But I feel that I have to go back to relearn rendering using what I've learn from painting/speedpaint...and see if I can see any improvement in my sketches.
As for books... "Andrew Loomis" and "George Bridgeman" should be great for everyone. In addition of the comtemporary master "Glenn Vilpu" would be good to have. But...if there is any life session around your area, I strongly recommend to go joint them because those books are sketches from real life. It's good to practice from life...in any real medium. And look around on life drawing thread, there are some awesome free stuff online. Good luck.

Awesome awesome awesommmmmmme. Thanks for showing some of your beginning oils. I'm about to start playing with them myself, just to try and familiarize myself with the medium. Your pencil work is awesome, and the way you are using the markers is what I aspire to do, once I begin practicing with them again. I can't really find any noticable crits, other then on the 2 bottom speed paintings everything seems washed out. Theres no real light lights and dark darks to push things into place. They are fuzzy. my one crit would be to use more ref when painting ..even for a speedpaint/sketch. use a painting or photograph that you like and base your painting or SP on that...i think it would help you learn about light and color quicker. that was one of the cool things i leraned from George hull in austin

keep it up --your making alot of progress!

JetPack42>> Thanks, I am hoping to get better at the oil thinging. And yes, looking forward to see us local arty kids.

One2hit>> Thanks! It the magic of the internet some randam photo as ref for that (It was done in like late 2002), but I modified it enough so that it doesn't look like actual real person rendering.

MikeC>> Thanks buddy.

Tyboo>> Shit, you don't even know how much l am in love with your last batch!!! Thanks for the advice, I will do that. you are the Man!

Groover>> Thanks buddy! yes, you should try...my mentor told me to start of with just either black and white or monocromatic painting for the first round. So you can just feel how the medium work and work the value instead of worry too much color and how to mix the exact color/value, it can be frustrating. After you feel comfortable with the routine...then you can start of with three major colors with white (you mix your own black, it's better that way.) Anyway, good luck.

gaboartpage>> You are one hell of a poet!!! Thanks! Yes ABCart session is so much fun. He's like my mentor since I was in school. And now I am officially learning how to paint from him.
Thanks, I like drawing female...because I used to suck at them so bad. Now I am working on getting good at landscape/scene concept.
Markers are fun...havn't really try them before but now I like them a lot because it sort of fit my personality. I don't have enough patience for tight render...I like painting like Sargent (think Big shapes and values...your eyes will fill in the rest. Do not worry about lil tiny mark of every single detail.) And markers have that ability to pull that kinda thing off. Am I making any sense? Well, it works for me...and I like it fast. I am sure there will be more 'cus I plan to do more on site landscaping this summer.

fukifino>> Thanks man...I try to be as diverse as I can...because I never know what I might get into yet. But if I can choose, I would love to just draw woman all day, but I don't think that alone will get me anywhere I want to go.

Thanks guys

lookin good as always homie.

I wanted to learn noses and face features better, so I set a goal to draw 100 heads from reference. I am on #78. I feel like I have learned a lot already, but when I go to make a nose from no reference I still feel like I haven't progressed very far. It is still a big struggle for me to get a nose out of my head . It seems like you dont have this problem. I was wondering if you get a second, could you post a quick step by step of how you construct a nose and the way you break it down? THanks man, it will help me a bunch if you can.

I just started doing that too. Sitting down and drawing huge pages full of heads/faces. I mean, as long as you remember that everything, even on the face is a 3D object then you can draw it from any angle. Noses seem to come pretty ok to me, but my problem is drawing different types of noses. Like huge fat ogre noses, or slender long french women noses. I say don't try to make anything too complicated. Think of what kind of nose you want. Imagine the basic shape from the angle you are drawing and lay down 3 or 4 light lines to get the basic shape. Usually I'll come back to it later after I sketch the rest of the face to make sure it's still in proportion and looks good. *shrugs* Everyone draws a little different so it's still good to hear how Xia does it too.

Great figure drawings as well. Man I don't check this threat for a while and all this new work! Your real confident with the pencil judging by the graceful marks that happen in a lot of your work, especially in the guesture drawings.

wow, ok first time looking at your book and I am mucho impressed. One thing I'm noticing: I like your gestures and speed paintings more than the "clean" drawings. Don't be afraid to leave things dirty and murky! If you explain everything 100% you run the danger of turning it into a diagram (which is great for art that is going straight to the 3d modeler but isn't half as cool as it could be).

I don't think it's clear above: I like your gesture life drawings A LOT. Some of the best I've ever seen.

marc_taro>> Thanks, It's an honor you stoping by, I am loving your thread and head study thinging. (Me, long time Big fan of your work) What am I doing different? Possibly, I have started painting oil about a couple months ago. It's very difficult medium to work with in short amount of time (I attend a weekly session, three hours from live model). In myopinion, I notice more the harmony in real color, playing around with edges, solid shape/reability of overall pic. I haven't been painting (digital or traditional) for that long...so I know nothing about any of it. Now...I know a lil... It helps me out a lot, I guess. Also my mentor
Aaron Coberly (http://www.aaroncoberly.com)
helps me out a lot in how to achieve certain thing in oil painting.
And I listen to whatever Craig Mullan has to say everytime he post on Sijun...and absorb whatever I can...even if just tiny lil molicular knowledge.

Going over your gestures? thats a actually a good idea, iv'e heard my teacher suggest that. But I was thinking more about making the characters have a fluid movement; where the whole body is moving in one direction. You had a lot of nice contaposto (gasp.. artword) positions for the ladies that would look nice for the finished paintings.

Xia, you are really doing great work. Wish I could have been there today...and Friday...man, I just buggered up my whole weekend, tomorrow I'll try and get some momentum back..heh.

The windmill is cool..the simple perspective is so dead on, thats what works so swell about it. The green haired girl is good because she looks so slick..everything seems to hold together convincingly. The pigman is too rough, and not contrasting enough, for my tastes.

The model on Sunday did a pretty swell job, I thought. Hopefully we will catch up to do some drawing this week.

Keep up the great work, sir.

Hi Xia,

I think this more smoothed out technique youīre working on is a good step forward. In the face itīs getting photorealistic. If thatīs what youīre out for - great success. Because such a realististic approach is something I personally would go for I like it very much.

Awesome, awesome stuff here. Your super clean character sketches remind me of stuff by a guy on here named Isric. Not sure if he's even on the boards anymore but i remember his stuff being really nice. And Im diggin the chick with the horns, thats a really cool shape you used.

shnikes! those pages of little sketches rock. page 2, robot on the far left! awesome!!!

On the girl, I think the reflective highlights on her neck and jaw are too strong. Looks like a skin condition. The corner of her collarbone is just right..that orangish hotspot.

is that a Kent robot I see? drawn from life? do they really have a robot here?????

the bed, the cloth, and the features of the face are awesome. its difficult to paint good looking ladies. kudos to you, sir.

T-Minus 8.5 HOURS TILL SKETCH NIGHT!!!! :vodkamachine:

wish i had a decent insult to express my jealousy and rage about that girl painting, but I dont.

All i gots is that I think all the speedpainting youve been doing came together on that one, freakin sweat dude.

I struggled and staired and found something to crit you on:)...the positioning of her right arm seems a little awkward, sorta hard to read. Its a combination of the cloth making it look like her hand goes behind her leg at first glance, and then there is no fold or wrinkle to tell me what its really doing. Thats a super nit pick man, this is amazing.

You probably get tired of hearing how good you are!!!
I apologize for not being more original!!!
You make me want to buy a set of markers (the big set)
If you have time turn me on to speed paint - no nothing about it
and I probably should since I am primarily a painter in traditional media.
I am pretty well versed with digital :::: having built my first computer in 1982 :::: it didn't work so I bought a Mac

Thanks guys :)

mephisto>>Thanks buddy! That's right side thinging shall be fixed, good thing you point it out. I should soften the edge and tone down the lighting on the bg behind her. That should solve the problem I think....maybe a lil more define shape to that side. Then some tweaking push and pull here and there...that should be it. Thank a lot buddy!!! :D

Jetpack>> Cool!

mentler>> No need for the set, the most used one is 30%, 50%, 80% then some black pointy pen if you only using them for sketching. Speedpaint is like underpaint for traditional, all they concern about is composition, lighting, and readibility...no need for neat picking detail. I will post some tutorial on my site soon. Keep your eyes and ear open.

Stokes>> Shut up! go draw something somethin...

lima c.>> You will be surprise how many people have that same reaction to that Panda. I don't understand either.

A walk in the park yesterday, couldn't resist to get some quick tree marker sketching down.

great gestures man! i love lookin at your stuff. it looks like the legs on your dudes got a little short at times. don't know if you were doing it on purpose (for a more "heroic" look)...also, the model wasn't even CLOSE to to being as ripped as some of your gestures make him look! haha!

Hey xia,

i really dig the shapes in speedpainting099.jpg, nice stuff all around. I like the marker sketches and poses too, makes me want to do some my self.

How about a tutorial or step by step of your digital work?

Excellent work on these. Your entire sketchbook, in fact, is inspiring. I remember hearing somewhere that the shorter the wavelength of light the more difficulty it has in travelling through water, so reds are really hard to see underwater, yellows less so, greens are easier, and blues are just fine. Something like that.

I tried, for the hell of it, adjusting selective colors on your image to see what effect it would have. I was really just satisfying my curiosity. I don't know if it is an improvement at all; rather I'm inclined to think it makes the image too flat, but I thought it was an interesting analysis so here it is:

Let me know if you're not okay with my doing this and I'll take it down.

one reminds me of "streetsharks" (like bikermice, just on rollerblades...), the other reminds me of evangelion. both funky. like your pencils more though
