What flea said is true. This kind of a thread is supposed to be in the Lounge. Guns can be cheap if they're at close range but a 50 pace draw is honorable. All in all I think swords are cooler usually.

all i can say in defence of swords is that there is no better satisfaction than killing sompthing up close and personal
i mean all you have to do with a gun is squese the trigger

ok back off guys/girls yes this thread is for art but also to get new ideas notice the word concept in conceptart.
I personly think theres more of a skill to learn behind swords. 50 paces was point less it took no skill except to try and be the first one to shoot. When fighting with swords you have to try and see what you opponents next move or attack is. But yes your stupied to try and attack some one with a gun with your sword.
I'll go with swords:)

Well actually I don't and won't have any satisfaction by killing "sompthing" up close and personal. Even at a distance for that matter. Maybe if I'm really really hungry and been in the wild for a month or two.
I do have to admit having a fascination for blades ("armes blanches" of all sorts for that matter). Guns are more of a technological marvel.
Now as for the usability of swords vs guns... I'd choose guns to be more practicle. In the sense that I have ZERO technique handling a sword. I'm a wuss so won't take any chances and would opt for something more expeditive like a UMP ;)
Btw form_n_focus, that was my first smile of the day :)

just wondering where people got the illusion that killing is and has to be a part of life... At least on human beings. If matters cant be resolved peacefully then imo they haven´t tried hard enough. Guns are cool because they are a technological marvel. The technology in the average guns nowadays and back to the old muskets is incredible. All the little details. But guns, like swords, should only be art pieces nowadays. Swords are cool because they look pretty. If you´ve ever seen a real swordfight then you would know that the anime sword fights are WAY off mark. They aren´t cool, it isnt cool to fight with swords, except maybe all the different ways you can slowly kill a person. Cut off chunks of flesh or some such. At least the gun goes fast at it.
Now.. Guns (lead traveling at high speeds) or swords (metal that bends, leves metal fragments, chips and cuts quite slowly unless sharpened to the extremes) are definately no cool..
but they look good

November 18th, 2003, 01:40 PM
i go for swords...because their is more honour behind it and they look cooler imo
when i think about using a gun in open battle i think about being a camper and not even seeing my enemy properly.with a gun you just can shoot, but with a sword you can also slice bred or cut wood or sumthing...;):P

Mhm, I suppose this is a question like who´s better Ninja, samurai or monk. This leads to nothing ...
Hi Talmir,
I don´t know what "real" swordfighting you´ve seen but if done properly it´s a short, yet bloody thing not better or worse than a gunshot. I´ve been doing Iai-Do and am studying the old, medieval european swordmasters (Thalhoffer, Meyer e.g.) and all what they show is - as you´ve told right, it has nothing to do with Hollywood and Anime - how to effectively disable your opponent. And this is a matter of split seconds and not of an elongated opera as is shown in many duels. Some japanese movies show good Iai (e.g. Kurosawas "Yojimbo") but over there there´s an audience that can appreciate it.
You´re not right about the sharpness of swords. A sword hasn´t got to be razorsharp to dismember your opponent. Most european, medieval sword have been somehow sharp as chisel and only the last 10 - 20 cm to the tip that was important to penetrate armour was razor sharp. Even so there was no problem (as e.g. the excavations in Wisby in Sweden show) that with this "blunt" weapons whole legs could be dismembered.
I think there´s no aesthetic in killing but an overall aesthetic of fighting that a gun (except in some of Jon Woos movies ;)) can´t provide. Anyway, as an owner of 8 swords (plus different other hand-to-hand-stuff) and because I feel uncomfortable with guns you may understand that I personally prefer a worthy sax, falchion, sword or whatever when it comes to drawing and fighting. For killing a gun is the more effective way.

If were talking about what is more useful when using these weapons for survial a sword is more useful. If you use a gun to kill an animail then you need a blade of some sort to cut your meat to cook it. But with a sword you alread have you blade and if you have a dagger your able to still through it to get distance.
Thats just my thoughts
Annubissl
November 18th, 2003, 04:47 PM
ok for the record talmir is right death is a part of the cycle of life but killing eachother is just pointless.
nuff respect to Zero Wave the pen(or wacom in his case, i dont have one yet) is mightier than the sword.
however being the violent maniac that i am i'm all for swords and various blade weapons. 1 for the shere violence of hack and slash, more damage more pain and if u do it right they dont have to die.
But seriously, like most others have said there is the aspect of honour involved in swordsmanship, but dont be confused with the hollywod crap. Swords are a work of art (especially the Asian blades) swordmasters but ther heart and souls into making a single blade(well some of them did anyway). IF u ever get the chance to examine a katana u'd see what i mean. There is just something that is kinda sexy about them, i can't say the same for guns.
well thats my 2 cents
OLSEN
November 18th, 2003, 05:44 PM
The reason that all armies in the world dumped the sword for the gun is pretty obvious. The gun is better.
And for the honour of using a sword, pffff, thats a load of crap if you ask me, honour is for idiots, if i ever end up in a life and death fight, honour would be the last thing on my mind. Now, wheres my popcorn...
Yea, and post some art..

Swords take alot of skill to use, and yeh, theres probly alot more honor in it.
But there's a reason guns win wars, and not swords.
Personally, I find guns really cool. A well made gun is as fine as any well made sword, and takes just as much skill to wield.
But I have some skill in using a katana, theyr cool and all, but I'd still take a nice sexy firearm.

I don't know about killing, but I personally think that the creation of a sword is a methodical process worthy of as much praise any any work of art old or new. I'm talking about master crafted swords, not the cheap remakes of movie swords you see on Ebay. I personally love swords, not for their purpose in killing, but for their beauty. There's just somethin about a sword....

I dont see how in days long past a sword could be pretty
just a tool used to kill if i were a pesant back then i would find no likeness of a sword
but that was then this is now through the ages wepons were ony used to inforce what people belived in and if you diddint agree well you would get the point
i guess guns are usefull but cheap all you have to do is point and pull the trigger
well in modern day there is no room for true warriors
couse you pull a sword then they pull a gun
bang you are dead
swords in this day and age are just for show which really sucks

Swords: needs a lot of pratice and brains to win a sword battle
Guns: Needs a lot of pratice to become a great shooter and also is VERY hard to win a guns fight
In a concept view: Sword and guns are almost the same .. when a guy (or girl) is the master of sword .. everyone likes it
when a guy (or dolphing) is master in guns and can shoot 40 guys w/o miss a shot .. everyone likes
The actual "diference" is in the kind of scene .. in a sword fight you show speed and skill ... in a gun fight you show alertness and strategy ..
some times a sword is better them a gun (like if youre killing w/o been seen ..... ) ... some times a gun are better (when youre coming by the front door against 300 guys ) .. XD even way .. i like better swords for rpg playing (people 2 people style) XD .. because you can do more stuff (like cuting the hand of the guy when he tryes a axe in you head XD )
well .. violence is fun just like any game.. have fun w/ not real violence is the same of drawing .. of playing a happy card game .. that dont make of you a killer w/o no heart .. the wrong thing in violence is not care about other lifes .. not the act inself ..

In todays world there are warriors, what do you think our army is made up of... yeah warriors, S.W.A.T. teams, special weapons and tactics, sounds pretty warriorish to me.
so to continue on my point, warriors are just really they ones that fight.... for a job..... gang members in L.A. are not warriors, but the cops that fight them are, because they have been trained. I guess what I'm getting at is the ones that were trained to fight.... by some one who was paid to teach them.
also I have to agree with OLSEN, honor is for morons..... such as People are Stupid

He-Man would win most definitely, but he would spare Skeletor because he's a forgiving kind of guy and he needs a worthy opponent like Skeletor. Skeletor would give him a run for his money though.
And in response to the original question, swords vs. guns, I say why settle for one? Grab some of both! Both take practice and skill to master, both exude cool, both get the job done, and it can't hurt to be skilled in both.
Also, some have been making comments about swords being more honorable, or saying that honor is for fools. Both these statements are incorrect. Neither swords or guns are more or less honorable. Honor comes from the person, not from the weapon he wields. Honor is not for fools either. Honor in battle is simply this: you do what it takes to defeat the enemy, but keep your honor by fighting for what is right. A combatant who rapes and pillages and steals and fights for selfish and evil gain has no honor, but a warrior who fights to defend his beliefs, family, and friends is an honorable warrior, no matter what weapon he uses.
Just like the most righteous He-Man, who rocks it hard-core.

also, consider using at least half decent grammar and spelling. noone is going to care if you screw it up a little, but when your entire post is so bad that it is barely legible, it is a sign that something is wrong. especially if you are a native english speaker. i dont care how old you are, have some respect for the boards and the people that are regulars here. you guys (i think you know who im talking about) are not doing yoursleves any favors.

Random thought when reading people_are_stupid's remarks in this thread: " ... where is your brain? it seems you're one of those people liable to play GTA-3 and then go out and shoot people's cars... "
For you: go and buy a plastic sword. It will give you a good feeling and at least you won't easily kill anybody with it. Stay away from the kitchen (sharp objects and strangely interesting colored fluids in weird bottles)
Why is it so difficult to talk about anything other than killing and maiming when it comes to concept art? Why do most pieces of art consist of half naked bare chested barbarians with either big tits or a huge club or the futuristic equivalent? I'm getting quite exasperated about this and threads like this one don't help... I sometimes find it difficult to even think of a story without any killing or fighting in it, that's what it's doing to me, and i want it to stop.

Erik: The reason why such violence is so central to games and movies is because it's the most straightforward manifestation of conflict.. it's not the only one, but it's the most popular..
Personally, I'd take the view of the question ("guns or swords?") as meaning 'which accessory has the capability of being most aesthetically pleasing?', and to that, I'd say 'it depends'.
