Hey I was wondering, what initial shapes do you use to stage figures in your drawings? Are there any kinda quick shorthand marks you make before adding detail? I'm having a little trouble staging characters. If you have any techniques please share them.

Well, how do you mean? Are you talking about how we initially set up a composition? Or is this about basic shapes used to convey a craracters form? Or is this more of a mystical symbolic thing where you want to know how to use geometric alchemic daVinchi code symbols to direct in the drawing of a picture that can be used to awaken Cthulu?
In other words, I think your question is a bit vague.

There is one method...it's pretty new and kind of experimental...
They call them lines. They're these little strokes you make with a pencil, pen, or even a brush. They can be straight or curved.
You should try it.

You'd have better luck with a more descriptive thread title.

I sort of draw the sides of the rib cage, then turn that into a peanut shape including the upper torso shoulders and all and the hips. Then I draw the upper legs one by one, then the lower legs and feet. Then I draw the arms one by one and the head last. I used to start with the head and work my way down, but eventually after doing 100s of gestures I found starting with the main body mass and legs was the easiest way for me to get the basic pose down with reasonably accurate proportions.

I just study the way others do it (Loomis hint hint) (Christopher hart hint hint)
And after trying out all these documented ideas I do what feels right. I often mix alot of different ways when drawing a figure. Just think of it as 3D and not 2D and add lines where it feels and looks right.
Remember, Ctrl-z is your friend! (Or eraser if you prefer the old geezer way! j/k)
