I guess I can add some self-commentary: My main intent in this piece was to portray a child who was never young, hence the concentration on the face. I thought an elaborate costume would be distracting from this goal, plus I wanted the figure to echo my memories of portrayals of Catholic saints (from my very eclectic upbringing), who seemed always to be portrayed as being simply garbed, and totally infused by beatific grace. Yet I also wanted to hint at the seed of madness within her, something I don't think I really quite managed, maybe trying to be too subtle.
The pose and composition lean on some probably obscure conventions and references. The moon bears the mark of Muad'Dib, symbolizing the constant influence her brother had on her despite her resentment of it in later years, and the rock formation recalls the life of the sietch, which, in this pose, she is beginning to turn away from. She is also turning from the night, the Fremen's friend, into the light of her future arrogant glory -- it also makes for interesting scene lighting. Lastly, she's turning to her left, and her knife is held left-handed, both allusions to the ancient superstition of the left side of things being "sinister."
OK, now I feel like I've had to explain the punch line ;P

Final!
It may not seem like it, but I spent A LOT of time on this, and I'm really proud of what I was able to accomplish.
EDIT: Don't hurt me Oregano!! please? :) I switched the images, I didn't realize that I would have time to work on it today, yay for canceled classes! So, I worked on teh background a bit.

Finally! Here it is, hope ya'll like!! *crosses fingers*
About my process, I wanted to capture the feel of both her youth and her wisdom so I tried to emulate Byzantine iconography. If you notice, her right hand is making the Christian symbol for faith, and her features reflect Anglo paintings from the 14th century. The background I wanted to keep as simple as possible, to make the character the most prominent part of this piece, but the corona also reflects on her saint-hood. The headdress was where I went a little more in depth, mimicking the hat that the pope wears; this ties into the Bene Gesserit sisterhood which is a lot like Catholic faith today. I also wanted to make her seem world weary, as she has thousands of years of information and experience inside her from birth; this I tried to reflect with the color scheme. I tried to tie in the Atreides colors which are black and green.

Obviously there is my final and some WIPness.
EDIT: Reuploaded, as I gave it a border in MS paint and that lowered the JPEG quality!
Duh!

St. Alia.
My idea for Alia developed as something of a mad child - someone holy by Fremen standards, but also someone you didn't really want to get too close to. I felt it was important that she have a sense of barely contained tension and impending movement.
502928
Wip.
I'm notoriously bad for not keeping wips. Usually my process involves many quick sketches on layers over the background in painter that are disposed of almost immediately until I find one that I like. I rarely if ever keep any of these, as they tend to be nothing more than quick scribbles.
502926
Ref.
I only used one reference shot for this image (which was done in two sittings) after I settled on the pose. I tried showing Alia in a variety of poses, but none of them conveyed the impression that I was after other than her crouching. I spent about an hour searching for an image that worked.

Okay, some weird colour choices today. I based the patterns on some clothes that I saw at an exhibition of traditional palestinian and bedouin outfits. Desert cultures and all that. She's leaning like pisa but by the time I noticed it was too late. WIPs are pencil drawing and the first pass of colour.

sorry... very rushed final... traditional poster colour with a bit of Photoshop touch up.
was hoping that she would still appear as mythical and godlike next to even stilgar.... beneath all the relatively more elaborate mini-reverend mother robe, she's still a very much a Fremen....
503142
regretted making her lost her baby fat too much and giving her a chin, maybe she would look more like an innocent Lolita with deadly intend...

edit: little red riding hood?!!! its not showing, but the veils are supported by mini dark crysknife

Not as finished as I would like, but I'm out of time, so here goes.
I tried to keep her looking childlike, and yet still have the serious demeanor of a fremen.

GENERAL NOTES:
A general reminder about the naming convention (WunderDark, Marco Mazzoni, gtgauvin).
Trev, I think your other piece was the stronger one.
Ashton – had this round been over 50 entries, yours would have been cut. There’s nothing there to identify the character as Alia.
Bluefooted – I was very sorry to see that you pulled your piece. Though I understand and appreciate your reasoning (and agree), I think we could have worked something out.

Lots of really nice entries - I voted for quite a few - though I think the younger ones fit the brief much better.

VampireHungerStrike and Opanewworld : wow... seriously, awesome job
loved the face of vampirehungerstrike's alia, and the overall ''desert feeling'' of opanewwworld
There was a LOT of other great piece. I think I said ''shit this kick ass so much'' like 15 times while watching everyone piece

it was kind of ignorable - I opened it up some on page 3 or 4, but forgot to update the brief. :[
And Bluefooted - you know, it's still not too late to get your piece in there :geekg:

Lol, opaneworld. Come over here and give me your hand, *slap!* now go read the rules. :P
Anyway, there are many eye catching artworks on offer. I do favour opaneworld's the most, but there are also some pretty cool costume designs on others, such as Vampire hunger strike's. I also just voted for a few that just made me feel good. :)

Oh Bluefooted, I'm so sorry you took away your entry, but you are loyal. :) Anyway I still vote for you.
My real votes goes to Openanewworld. Amazing mood in your picture. The desaturated colors are just perfect, I love the composition too.
Also voted Alice, I like the texture and the clothes design.
A lot of entries for this one, and a lot of good works!

Sorry, no time to crit all of these, just a couple of notes.
edujante - while I love the texture and detail, I think the figure gets lost easily in the midst of it all - just looking at the poll thumbnail, I said to myself, "where is the character?" I understand the stylistic approach, but I think it hindered being able to display her fully.
ws.iono - I love the eyes, they're really creepy!
Adi - great painting, but I wish the cloting/costume/design were a little more detailed.

Very nice round.
Buckster, Openendworld, Alice, Marco Mazzoni: very phuckn cool.
Trevor: your preliminary sketch had more potential.
Voraz: great composition but dude, this is the adult version of Alia.
Cheers,
Kan
