ahh crazy good work and progression man, been killing it. I was just looking through the earlier pages of my sketchbook and I completely forgot that you were one of the very few people who actually gave me regular support in the beginning and I just wanted to say thanks dude.
February 2nd, 2012, 10:00 AM
It is very inspiring to see how you have progressed. It shows that with a lot of hard work and dedication you can get very far. I love it!

Thanks a lot nicky, nibras and timo. I really appreciate it!
Ohh wow been having a crazy breakthrough the last few days with how much I can finish something. I think that doing 4+ hour studies has been a huge help in learning the other end of the image making spectrum. Feel like I've been on a huge plateau the last 4 months or so with my stuff, over-complicating the crap out of everything to impress, so much so that I've been forgetting a lot of key fundamentals. But when I think about it, if I want to make something impressive, I'd rather make a very simple image that absolutely NAILS the fundamentals and is polished to shit than an idea thats trying so hard it suddenly has no backbone or decent finish. It feels wrong to even say its lingering in the comfort zone instead of pushing it, since I'm still painting stuff I don't know well and researching it. Been discovering crazy simple flaws in all my stuff, like the eyes aligning with the edge of the nose (which is funny because I've known that rule for the last 3 years and haven't noticed I've been doing it wrong!) Using desaturated lightsources (not everything has to be a very warm or very cold lightsource). And other than that, just finding out how much time you can spend really finishing something if you break it down into something simple. The challenge is only as difficult as you make it. Of course, keep yourself on the edge of your seat, but don't blow yourself out of the water if you want to make pieces to impress people.
Annddddd some art!
Life Drawing, all fairly quick today. I went back to using characoal. I totally suck at it but actually really love using it. Something so awesome about just running your hand through it and working back into stuff
Photostudy from the streams. This is 6 hours, so glad I spent the time. I felt like any longer would start to feel a little bit too much of doing it for the sake of doing it. You can check the creation of studies like these at www.livestream.com/samc at 10am GMT daily (I hope)
February 6th, 2012, 07:00 PM

February 7th, 2012, 06:39 PM
YEAH man that knights kicks fuckin ass!
February 8th, 2012, 02:15 AM
great study man, you're rocking these lately.
one thing i noticed is that when you draw arms you tend to want to draw them at perpendicular angles and with the wrist pretty much straight. your hands and upper arms from imagination are good but i think you could benefit from studying how the whole arm bends and twists and especially what the elbow and forearm muscles do when the arm moves. i think that has a lot to do with the stiffness of some of your pieces. hope that helps.
cheerio mate :yayca:
February 8th, 2012, 01:05 PM
Your sketchbook rocks this stage ;-]
February 8th, 2012, 04:45 PM

I thought i start young, but you started with 14 ...
this is a great sketchbook :D
February 11th, 2012, 09:48 PM
Good to see that you are fighting your problems.
CRIT: Anyways someone may have already mentioned this but your characters seems to be a bit awkwardly placed, like the axe guy on the gauntlet piece you did or the lizard dude ( it might be the arm positioning). Those pieces are history now though so you have probably already addressed it :p.
Anyways keep rocking!! And if you already know about this !IGNORE! my post :p. Just trying to help :)
February 13th, 2012, 10:20 PM
good work, i like the knight piece very much!

Love that last poster! And the 3 girls, the head exploding, the portrait and the bladerunner chick. Nice work man!
February 18th, 2012, 06:23 AM
Ha! That Nausica one's great. Your skin tones and faces have such clean and detailed definitions (your colours in general really). They're awesome.
In some parts they look great, like the face of the knight you drew earlier, it's all sharp and looks really slick. But at the same time some parts need some more texture to feel more convincing (only in my opinion though), like around the highlights of the cow-girls arms, or some more definition in the near-background behind her.
Hope that makes sense / helps. Your colours are beautiful.
February 18th, 2012, 11:16 AM
February 18th, 2012, 08:12 PM
Those bottom two paintings are impressive, man.
February 19th, 2012, 02:04 AM

Sketch for fun
February 22nd, 2012, 07:24 PM
Love the blond girl in post 2295. nice facial expression.
overall I like how your studies shows focus areas clearly. I guess in your finished work any of the loose areas will also be painted, but I hope you keep the nice balance between focal point and other areas...It adds a lot to the overall composition...and it also creates nice flow.
February 22nd, 2012, 08:48 PM
im gonna just go ahead and give you 5 stars again because youve earned it man! seriously loving the studies, but that musketeer looking fella is amazing man! really pushing yourself on that one!! keep it up bro!

February 28th, 2012, 02:53 PM
Great work on the book cover, man. Really diggin' it.
March 3rd, 2012, 06:04 AM
Try to increase the pencil level! Don't become one of the artists who get better slowly since they changed to more digital stuff! I can see it in your progress: the surface of forms is built digitally in another way. It's like two stairs:
One with small steps and one with bigger steps. The understanding of transforming your thoughts into the to the audience communicated content will grow much faster if you keep on drawing more pencil / line sketches. That might sound like just someone's personal opinion, but remember: Many many pros suggest Bridgeman for the reason of understanding this "surface of the form stuff".
I am looking forward to watch your journey, even if you keep on staying in the digital world. And now: Grab a pencil and a paper ;)
March 3rd, 2012, 06:32 AM
New stuff's looking really cool man, diggin those lions!
Now without wanting to point my finger at any specific persons I will just give some general adivce which was probably one of THE best advice ever given to me:
ALWAYS check who's giving you crits, especially if they want to give you advice on technique and on HOW to improve your work. I do this all the time, whenever I get a crit I check out that persons work immediately and then judge if I take or if I trash it!
Pointing out flaws in a painting can be done by a five year old but giving advice on how to actually improve is a very hard thing to do, and manymany people (many people in this thread) think that they know what they are talking about but they really don't!
March 4th, 2012, 05:50 PM
A little treat: me as a dwarf <3
March 4th, 2012, 05:59 PM

March 5th, 2012, 06:36 PM
Your studies are paying off a lot, man. You knew exactly what to simplify on this (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/attachment.php?attachmentid=1435614&d=1330897801). SB pages are getting stronger and stronger looking. Good stuff, man.
March 5th, 2012, 07:31 PM
2hr study this morn
March 6th, 2012, 12:57 AM
Wow. These are the sketchbooks that really get me interested in the site. The amount of refinement you've achieved in the last 3 years really impresses me. You seem to start to get a significant improvement around page 40. Anything specific happen around that time?
March 12th, 2012, 02:14 AM
i really need to keep my eye on you man, every time i come back here your power level goes up by like......9000 :O
March 29th, 2012, 05:53 AM
Hey, I know you get this a lot, but you genuinely are the most inspiring person on here for me. I looked through your sketchbook every 10 pages-ish and I was captivated, your progress, dedication and raw talent are awe inspiring. Thank you for sharing your work. It makes me think perhaps if I was to practice as much, given time I could improve as much! Although I have a long way to go, you've inspired me to give it a shot (:

Rankao: I think I had a short period of hard work at that point over a christmas holiday, but wasn't able to maintain it. The real journey starts at page 50 though when I started doing this full time
Oh hey, figured I should update over here! Thanks a lot for all the nice comments, really appreciate reading them :)

Man,... I love your line work. It is so clean in studies. I wish I can do that instead of scribbling like I do. Thanks for sharing. Keep'em coming. More lines please... :)
April 7th, 2012, 07:00 PM
Almost forgot, theres this too <3
April 7th, 2012, 07:00 PM

April 7th, 2012, 07:25 PM

Very nice use of cold and warm color contrasts.
You are developing great! :)

good stuff man! Love the colors in the background in that first masterstudy <3
April 11th, 2012, 10:35 AM
You have a good eye for color and you create a great atmosphere using those colors in every single piece. Really amazing work! :)
April 11th, 2012, 01:08 PM
you're a sexpot, a handsome uk sexpot.
April 11th, 2012, 02:49 PM
April 14th, 2012, 12:46 AM
Im digging your masters studies.
April 15th, 2012, 03:44 PM
On the bloodsports entry, something about the stomach/lower back of the girl looks off. The way that hes grabbing it makes it seem like its just a circular cylinder instead of being an actual torso. Haha I'm not really sure how to explain it but hopefully you get what I mean.
Keep it up Sam! And your streams are awesomee. :)
April 18th, 2012, 05:44 AM
seems to be one of my fave sb's in here, i love your technique! Thanks for being so inspiring. :D
April 23rd, 2012, 01:44 PM
Woaahh forgot to post this stuff in here. Trying to reactivate the Crimson Daggers SB so I've been posting in there, you guys should too! Here's stuff

GoT fan art. Jorah Mormont, the brave bear
April 25th, 2012, 10:27 AM
WOW! Amazing studies and really sharp color skills.
It's pretty mindblowing to see the transformation from page one.
April 25th, 2012, 03:16 PM
Great values and textures as always Sam!
I think for your knight design at the bottom of #2358 you should consider the silhouette of the character more. At the moment he's a bit blocky/chunky.
The master study came out amazing, by the way :)
April 25th, 2012, 09:25 PM
Geez man...so awesome!
The colors..the FORMS! Everything has this solid feel to it, like it exists in reality. But without being hyper realism...geezzz...lovvve it!!
April 25th, 2012, 09:43 PM
oh facking awesome colors dude whattahel that piece of that girl the colors theyre so vibrant colorfull *faints*
April 26th, 2012, 09:39 AM
Wonderful stuff as usual sam!
Done a really quick painter of some issues with the boat painting. Her closest arm seems to be rather chunky, and I think her shadows are a tad too strong and red to match the surroundings. It's pretty messy and i'm not too well informed on the subject but I made them a tad more blue to match bounce light from the sky/sea. Also, the top of her hands on the rail seem to be lacking in volume (I couldn't do a paint over for that because i suck too much.)
April 26th, 2012, 10:48 AM
BHCS: Maann yeah that's been bugging me so much, kinda convinced myself it was just me being weird. Made like 10 editions to this piece since I've called it done, but I think this'll be the last one D: aha thanks!
May 2nd, 2012, 03:43 PM
Been pretty sparse with updates recently. Kinda fallen into a thing at the moment where I have so many things on the go that its kinda hard to update regularly. Still doing 2 hours of anatomy studies in the mornings, and sketching around in pencil to help with figuring out my ideas. That stuff all looks the same, and there doesn't seem like much point in scanning.
Decided I'm gonna illustrate a made-up book, as a vehicle to improve on. Gonna be called 'Storm Brewer' (so gay I know) and its all about flying ships :D Gonna be doing some character concepts to figure out who everyone is and what they wear (got the protagonist here) and then illustrate all the key moments in the story. Should be fun.
Next thing. Me and Dan Warren are running a book cover challenge for whoever is interested in that: http://www.crimsondaggers.com/forum/thread-836-post-6668.html#pid6668 Doing James and the Giant Peach as the first one.
Lastly, some sculpture refs I took in Berlin : http://s268.photobucket.com/albums/jj29/SamCarr94/sculptures/
You got anatomy, hands and drapery all right there!
Anyway here's the art :)
Protagonist for 'Storm Brewer' She's a fairly clean slate character to start with. Supposed to be very ordinary, hence her longing for adventure (which I think we all get around that age.)
And some studies!
Texture experiments, trying to figure out all this stuff is hard!
May 2nd, 2012, 04:27 PM
WOah man. I just flicked between your first and last page and GOD have you improved! A real inspiration, man. Keep it up!
May 2nd, 2012, 04:58 PM
Studies just keep looking more and more boss, man. Those sculpture refs are fucking awesome, too. Thanks for sharing.
May 2nd, 2012, 06:01 PM
May 2nd, 2012, 07:33 PM
Really great artwork you have here :D Your use of light is wonderful.
May 3rd, 2012, 01:40 AM
I really love the illustration with the blonde girl and the ships; it seems very different from what you usually do but at the same time really showcases how much you've improved and how wide your skillset is. :) i love that there's a really strong narrative feel to it too.
as always, amazing and inspiring studies! the texture in them, man.
May 3rd, 2012, 06:51 AM
Seriously, 2 hours every morning?! Damn. What kind exactly - detailed gestures or quickies?
A mixed bag, I suppose. Posemaniacs?
May 3rd, 2012, 11:09 AM
Love the references and love the updates! You made us wait but it was worth it - great work as usual! Can't wait to see more of your story art.
May 3rd, 2012, 12:58 PM
Great Stuff here! I have some work for the Nightfall line coming out in October so who knows maybe we'll each have pieces in the same product! It's good to touch base with a colleague and you can consider yourself bookmarked!
May 3rd, 2012, 02:11 PM
really great sketchbook. love all these studies!
May 4th, 2012, 11:53 PM
Cheers for the reference images! shame they are on photobucket *shrugs fist*
I like the book idea, shall be awaiting new updates. I saw some issues with the Elle painting, thought I should point them out with another paintover -> http://i.imgur.com/QXmoh.jpg
He skin looks a tad too rubbery, so I added a bit more of a highlight, fixed some lighting inconsistencies, hand size and a few other tweaks. Not sure if its an improvement, but hopefully it will help in some way. :)
May 5th, 2012, 08:38 AM
all those work on vagina commissions really show nicely in you work. nice implied details there. .....the rest is alright.
...I love you
May 5th, 2012, 07:50 PM
nice work lately man, The Jorah Mormont painting is really close to how I pictured them reading the book :)
May 6th, 2012, 07:41 PM

New Storm Brewer concepts
May 15th, 2012, 08:40 PM
Ooo Forgot this. I have work coming out my ears haha
May 15th, 2012, 10:26 PM
Love the storm series thing you're doing! In my opinion the white parts on their armor are too bright, almost like its overexposed. It shows the reflective material but it could be toned down a bit. Ah I dunno. :X
I like the dudes piercings!!

May 16th, 2012, 11:20 AM
great stuff. and the improvement.. just wow
May 17th, 2012, 08:33 AM
I know you're constantly improving, but the amount of improvement visible in the last few posts is unreal and so inspiring. I love how you're pushing more and more of a narrative slant lately, especially with the project you're doing, just adds so much more depth to the pieces.
One thing that's bothering me about the latest though, is the figure's body language - she's naked, exposed, chained up and imprisoned in a big scary castle/dungeon by a big scary monster (and probably freezing too)... and it seems like she's posing for a fashion shoot instead. Her expression's pretty vacant and I think it takes away from the drama of it a bit. Other than that though, it's beautifully done - the lighting, texture, edge control, atmosphere, s'just love. :D Incredible.

loving what you have in your moleskine, nice studies. Dig the illustrations as well! Keep up the great work :)
June 29th, 2012, 03:10 PM
Nice personal piece. Cool to see you used the frog study. The only critique I'd have is that there is a disconnect between the top part and the bottom one, because the two characters aren't interacting at all (e.g. knight isn't looking at the character below). It looks more like a poster where two scenes have been collaged together. Btw I love how the knight's face looks like, despite that's it's a small piece of the whole picture.
Can't wait to see more.
June 29th, 2012, 06:22 PM
great studies :O

July 8th, 2012, 03:28 AM
wow what an update, love the first sketchbook pages alot!
July 10th, 2012, 05:49 PM
Aaannddd a fairly shameless application of the Alien screencap from my mind. This was more of an exercise in recreating the essence of the shot rather than creating something mindblowingly original...You can see how my brain tried making everything seem like its from a normal perspective haha
July 14th, 2012, 06:19 PM
hey man , your gallery is truly inspiring and amazing , keep it up .....cheers
July 15th, 2012, 02:01 AM

July 15th, 2012, 04:20 PM
Love the studies, man. Painterly, just the way I like it. The sketchbook pages are damn nice too! Lovely work with the pencil. Overall this whole sketchbook is fucking awesome! You've come a long way ;]
July 15th, 2012, 06:32 PM
Thanks for all the feedback! The words of encouragement really do help more than you know when I feel shitty
Got some work stuff I wanna show but as usual it's NDA :( sucks when it feels like I've done nothing because I have nothing to show. Got a new Storm Brewer concept in the works and personal illus on the go so they should be done soon! Keep an eye out
Sooo here's some steps to that 'Cave Exploration' piece. As you can see I'm kinda shitty when it comes to planning with personal work. This is kinda half laziness, half intentional. With freelance, a big thing is showing the client the thumbnails, they pick one, and then you paint it. It's definitely more efficient but I do enjoy (for the most part) playing with ideas as I go with personal stuff. I guess I kinda shoot myself in the foot sometimes though
Michael Hampton studies
Anddd some fun sketching. I usually take breaks by going and harassing my brother or curling up in a ball and crying, but I figured I might just start doing some quick 15 minute things instead
July 16th, 2012, 12:28 AM
Love ya work mate! It really shows from your first images until now how much work you've put in. Good on ya!

Amazing paintings man, your anatomy studies are looking really good too.
July 19th, 2012, 05:00 PM
Really loving the latest one, really shows how much control you have over texture and I love the cold colour scheme on his skintone. :)
July 19th, 2012, 06:24 PM
I could easily see that on a card. Great work Sam! Wonderful rendering and the expression is great.
July 19th, 2012, 07:16 PM

Perhaps i'll get this kind of level when i reach page 81 heh :D
Saw you draw after miles_ sketches at some point. Did it help you improve your linework? What else did?
Thank you for sharing :)

Dany & Jorah team FTW! Love your approach to the subject - very original.
If you're an ASOIAF fan - maybe you'd like to give a look to my sketchbook.
It's not even near to yours quality, but it deals with a similar subject.

This stuff is crucial (http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rDOo_W_UpwU/UB9r1ZS004I/AAAAAAAAA0w/CqWkOB90B8I/s1600/hampton+004.JPG), dude. If you get the ellipses right, you get almost everything right. <3
August 7th, 2012, 03:41 PM
This SB is so awesome, so much improvement in here, i applaud and congratulate you man, keep it up!
August 9th, 2012, 01:16 AM
83 pages!? I got some WORK to put in man. My ass even gets kicked right before bed. I'll be at 50 in... wow. I am gonna have to RAPE my sketchbook!!
August 11th, 2012, 03:39 AM
You've put a ton of work into your progress as an artist. I must admit that I did not look at every page of your sketchbook. 80 + pages is a lot of material to glance through. But I did stop in at about every 2nd to 3rd page though, and I am most impressed by your sheer dedication to your craft and the care and attention you give to each study.
To this I say congratulations dude, your improvement from pure shit to gold has been most breath taking. It is really a true pleasure to see an artists progression in the way that I have seen here in your sketchbook.
There are of course areas in which improvement could still be made. I will attempt to outline a couple here.
I have noticed a consistent problem in your paintings and renderings thus far, especially in the human form and that is the natural surfaces, in particular fleshy textures, are not rendered well. Many of your live subjects have an almost plastic-like, or porcelain quality to them. I would suggest doing a series of longer studies of flesh tone, flesh texture, and the nature of highlights on different fleshy and organic surfaces.
You have made unbelievable progress in that area, but this is the biggest glaring flaw in your art that I could see at a glance.
Additionally, I think you should dedicate a little more time to fluidity in the human form. You have clearly developed a magnificent understanding of superficial human anatomy and it's application to art, but your imaginative and unreferenced studies show a certain rigidity to them that stems from a lack of understanding of how shapes should flow together to create a smooth and seamless appearance of weight and movement.
So to recap: Work to get a greater understanding of flesh textures and the nature of highlights and sub-surface scattering on and in living flesh, and work to make your creatures and people have the appearance of rhythmic and fluid motion. If you improve these two things then your work will shine all the brighter for it.
Again your work is a true inspiration, and I thank you for sharing your progress with the rest of us, and all the best of luck in your future endeavors.
With kind regards,
Nikolai -- Sepulverture

Sketching <3 (http://www.livestream.com/samc)
August 13th, 2012, 06:46 PM
Izzual: Thanks! I have two reasons: 1) Its a pretty boring image, nothing behind it, if I'm not interested than it probably won't get done. 2) I do quite a lot of polished stuff for clients that I can't show, so sometimes just sketching for the sake of making sketches without having to commit can be really relaxing

ANYTHING IF YOU WANNA GO! FROM JUST A BEGINNER TO A PRO! Y'GONNA NEED A MONTAGE! *chorus: Montaaaaaaage* EVEN ROCKY HAD A MONTAGE!
August 14th, 2012, 09:02 AM
Great update as usual, you definitely have the moral high ground here :') Gorgeous stuff, real clean brushstrokes... I saw the Drizzt piece on Deviantart, really love the way you managed to capture that sunset-y glow, the lighting's perfect. :) One thing I have noticed, is you seem to use a similar compostion to that one alot - main focal point/character in front, secondary focal point/character in the back, maybe some framing elements...
Not saying it's a bad thing, it works really well, just thought I'd point it out just in case you hadn't noticed (and because I can't find anything to crit and I'm getting tired of saying how good your textures are. :'] )
You're kicking ass here, fer sure. :)

Lovely brushstrokes on the still life pieces. That kind of simplicity is what I'm after, but, ohhh, it's so hard! Amazing studies and sketches on the previous page too.
November 12th, 2012, 03:39 PM
damn dude, your slaying it lately. loooove those sketchbook pages! very cool stuff lately man!
November 12th, 2012, 06:43 PM
Amazing job on the last two illustrations! The first one is especially well done. She has a killer body and a face to match!
I do feel that the face and upper torso in the second piece isn't at the same level as the rest of the image, it seems unfinished. I think it's missing some greens.
Keep up the good work!
