Hi
After few months of visiting this page, I have decided to join you. Well I have the same desire as all of you do, but don't know how work on my self to achieve it. Here in the Czech Rep. it's quiet hard to find somebody who would help you out with this kind of artwork, or school that would support me. Right now I am studying product design, cause I think it's the closest I could get here. I think this is a great place to get advice and find the right way to go. I'll post some of my later work and will see what you think. I'll be happy for anything you'll tell me about my work, so please critique my work. I'll appriciate it. :yayca:

To the last two pictures: The sculpute is my final highschool project. As you can see it's one of my scifi abstract designs. The second thing is a guide book I have done as a part of the project. It's in a paper (first part) and digital form in flash (second). Hope you like it.

Since all the teachers told me I will not make it far with those drawings in first post, I had to start with the traditional studies. I know I need it... so here are some of them.

WELCOME.

Are these copies? Or are they from your imagination? Either way most of your tech stuff is a great way to get your lines down efficiently. I think your drawing skills are strong enough to move on to some real studies.

Keep on drawing!

Those tech stuff things are my imagination, I like to draw these a lot. My teachers aren't really happy about that but that's ok. I am trying to study anatomy and things like that, those study drawings are from my figure drawing class. I'll try to work harder on those. Thanks for the comment :)

Well yeah I know... I am slow, need to pick it up
Anyway here is some new stuff, like small thumb line sketches of air crafts, the important thing was perspective for me. At the end are some studies of eyes. What do you think? Please comment my stuff, anything is wellcome.

So... still nobody is commenting anything but that's ok :), I will not give up. Lately I have been working on some star fighter designs to get better in perspective and marker technique. Also I have been learing anatomy, basically skeleton first and some muscles. I did many drawings to this theme, but I am going to post only one of them since the others are the same. In this one I used the wooden figure to see the pose, and than did some drawing in like bones and muscles by memory. I know the head suck and some other things as well but it's just a start :). Hope it's getting better

Whops I forgot... so this is from today, I have used the knowledge of skleton and few muscles that I learned this weekend. First I drew the skeleton pose and than drew in the muscles and other things. Basically the same thing I did before with the Mr. blue muscle, but with a real model. What do you think?

Hey, so here is what I am doing in these days. The first term is getting to an end, so I have to get my school stuff done first. Than I will start where I have stoped in my CA training :) We have to do many studies of body parts and here are some of them. Feel free to criticise my drawings, I will appriciate it. :yayca:

The way from school to home takes about 4 hours, so I did some drawings to use the time in a good way. The lines aren't perfect I know, often because of the bumbs on railroad :). I did some skeleton studies, here are some of them.

In the last post, some of the skeletons seem to have weird proportions.
You have some great rendering above though, and some amazing design, just keep at it, and don't be discouraged by your teachers. Also, keep doing the anatomy studies, they will help you if you want to go into the concept art industry.
Good luck.

Hey, so here is some more stuff. I know it's nothing detailed, but that was not the point. I just tried to practice the quick drawing and shape. I also tried to come up with some new shapes tan those before. I have put this here so you know I didn't stop drawing :). School keeps me busy. And also most of the drawings have been done whlie traveling in train. So the quality is not good.

Hey, so... I am trying to stop playing world of warcraft and do more drawings. This is what came from my trying. I think that the shape is much better from before. But I guess it will be better if somebody else will judge it. Hope you like it, and wish me good luck with not playing that damn good game.

Hey so here is some of my life drawing classes. The first one is from the last week, and the last one from today. I have to say that the second drawing is really bad... especially the face part. I did it over and over again and than I have ren out of time so it end up to be like this.... I have to pracitce more those heads. I have some more pics, but I have to find the scan first. :yayca:

So most of the work for my school is done, but still not all. Anyway here are some quick sketches, nothing detailed. I have tried to do some anatomy drawings, especially faces. I did more of those, but I guess one example is enough :). Than I did some more ships to practice perspective, and right after that some robot's parts and robots it self. The last picture is just a try for a soldier. I know the head is too big and amrs too long. I did this kind of a picture for the first time. Anyway feel free to tell me your opinion or what else should I draw. I would like to know what you think. :yayca:

Take a magazine, and draw every face in it ;)

4 hours to get to school?
Do you do that every day?
Respect dude :p

You need to try use the confidence you have with those marker drawings & use those on the faces, people...

Practice some mouths, looks like you haven't really mastered those.

And what paper is that you guys draw on A1? that's pretty sweet :p

Ok, a magazine sounds like a good idea :). Till now I was drawing only a 3D head model on the posemaniacs web page. 4 hours every week or two, that would kill me if I had to do it every day :). I hope that my face sketeches will be better after some time. I need to get into it. I'll focus on detailes onece I'll be able to draw the whole head properly, but thanks for the hint. The paper we are using at school is a huge paper roll. It's pretty big actually :).

Thank you wery much, I am so glad you like the ship designs :). I love machines of all kind. I can't draw it for my school tho since my teacher doesn't like it, cuase in his opinion it doesn't work and so it's useless. I am happy you like it, as an industrial designer :), that means a lot to me.

Yes I do attend an art school. My major is product design, but that's just a name of our art studio. It depends on the students what they want to design (and what they are capable to do).

Hey Fregy,

I read your post in my thread, and that's funny, I did a lamp for my final project as well. It was retractable so it would expose more or less light depending on how much you expanded or contracted the shade. Basically like those light switches where you can adjust the brightness of the light, except mine was manual.

Art Center is a really excellent school, it's definitely my school's "Rival" school. They do really awesome work.

maybe since your teacher doesn't like spaceships since they're not practical, do cars or motorcycles or some kind of already-existing vehicle?

I might try some cars designs, but I didn't do it yet since I think it's much harder than a space ship. I wanted to learn the basics of perspective by drawing spaceships. Now that I kind of know, I might try. Tanks for the idea :). Altho I have to finish the lamp first, the deadline is close. :yayca:

Here are finally some of my designs. I think that the improvmenet in perspective thanks the tutorial is pretty big. I still have to figure out the line thicknes to add some more depth, so it doesn't look so flat. I don't know why but in the last picture I like the drawing more than the rendered picture. Hope you like it, I am going to use this kind of technique in my other space ship drawings as well.

No nápodobně :) taky jsem tady ještě čecha nepotkal. Nemají to rádi, takže makám doma :). Zatim :yayca:

Hi
These posters were made for a club celebration in a scifi theme. I wansn't told what exactly they want. Just that it has to be 15 pieces of A3 paper format and has to have something to do with future. So I made up some sights and abstract scifi objects. I used markers to do the shading and later on added those black spaces in photoshop. It has been quiet difficult for me, since my focus of drawing was mainly at machines it self, not enviroment or characters. I did my best for now tho. Tell me what you think. I hope you like it.

March 24th, 2009, 02:18 PM
Hi dude, sorry for saying you suck at figures, you obviously are not avoiding the subject. I'm going to try to be a little more helpful. :) Talking about the guy in the chair:

1)His foot is square. Actually the whole lower leg is stubby. You scrunched up his feet and legs because you ran out of paper, which is no better than just cutting them off. Plan ahead, think about composition. You don't have to use the edges of your paper, you can draw a border and work inside that. Don't indicate anything too darkly, work over the entire figure until it fits in the composition and is the correct proportion. Use the negative spaces to help you draw. Lay the foundations for a solid drawing.

2)Don't forget you are creating a work of art. Don't slack off on what the model is sitting on. Not saying you should work on it as long as the figure... but you shouldn't scribble it in either. :)

3)You are way, way too concerned with contour! Which I understand, I am fascinated by the millions of curved surfaces that make up a person... but it is not nearly as important to creating a solid drawing as form.

In the beginning stages of drawing, after the composition is worked out and your figure fits the page, you should concentrate on form. Instead of drawing loose, messy strings to indicate the edges of the body you should be drawing big simple forms. They don't need to be blocks and spheres, but they need to be much simpler than what is going on in your drawing.

I don't know if you've seen this, but I love Kevin Chen's figure drawings, and seeing how he breaks the figure down into forms.
http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=1432

You should also look at this if you haven't seen it.

Hope this is helpful.

Hey

NEED HELP HERE: PLEASE SOMEBODY TELL ME AN ANOTHER STEP IN CHARACTER DESIGN AFTER LEARING ANATOMY

For last week I have been studying human anatomy. So far I kind of know the whole sceleton and muscles, except feets and hands. Will keep working on that. I did most of the drawings from memory, but sometimes I needed to take a look to make sure it's right. I also used a couple of pics from posemaniacs. I made up some of the poses to try put the muscles on. What do you think? And please tell me the next step.

This is an assasin cog, I tried my best with the tablet. This is kind of my first digital painting I really tried to finish. Still a lot of things to learn and do.

I did many small sketches of different cog guys. I picked this one to try out.

Not bad.
1) The highlights are a bit disturbing and illogical as the material seems to be rusted, scratched and dusty. They shouldn't be so sharp and shiny.
2) Work a bit on line weight. Make the line wider where it touches the ground or where it is in shade. (check that Design Sketching ebook)
3) Use different way to express perspective than lowering the opacity. This makes it look like two separated objects. Reducing details or changing the lineweight would make it more natural.
4) More shading. Focus on volume first than on a texture.

Still realy nice post, definitly better than my first computer sketches.

Fregy, I peeked through your SB, and I admire how much work you're doing! Very cool to practice as much as you have! Where you seemed shaky with human anatomy and proportion, I see the details are getting smoother, more assured. The same goes with your machines! I also noticed you're putting more variety in the styles of your machines, so that's great!

Keep up the good work, you're definitely getting somewhere! How are you doing with character design? To direct yourself some, perhaps gathering references of things, people, whatever you can to give you an idea of what kind of character you want to make. You can use what you collect to formulate some paper and "mind" sketches before you go to town with the character creation! Of course, I'm still a baby at this so I hope to practice what I preach. :P

Someone may have already told you some info, but I wanted to encourage you further. :D

As for your digital art, there are some things to consider:

Think of your light source(s) before you start just painting. This may go for ambient light as well. Now, you might just have a generic background lit in that last picture, but since I see a cast shadow down there, that means there is definitely a light directed at it from above somewhere. Just be sure you get an idea of where that light is, find references with similar lighting, then you can really flesh out your work. :D

This goes for your shadows and higlights as well. I see sparkles all over that awesome cog. But are they where they "should" be? Not sure! Also, the flames up top. They need to "glow" more, but if they do, is the flame light brighter than that other light that is casting the shadow? It will influence how your cog is shaded!

I also agree about the perspective--rather, the distance of parts on the cog. While the idea of fading into the ambient colour is right (as far as I recall), one thing that makes the hind parts look "apart" from the rest is that they look far away. Or the air is REALLY thick, really dense! ;)

Use the shadows, where light won't hit the hind parts because the front parts are shielding them. So, you can darken the hind legs and such a little more because it's not getting as much light! That kind of thing. The change of line weight is also a great idea, plus even line colour.

Pardon me for the length of this post. I saw how much you were working over time on your stuff, and I just wanted to acknowledge it, encourage you! I hope you're doing well. Good stuff! ^_^

Sorry for not replying sooner. Got to busy by drawing the cog. First of all, I got Intuos 4 L, the activ part is about A4. And it's definitely better than Intuos 3. The size is more practical than the older version, and working with it is much easier. Actually if you would like, we can meet so you can try out on your own, because I am going to come to Plzen in few days. I guess nothing is better than Cintique... , and I guess the intuos was worth the money, at least for me. To be honest, I was about to discuss with you the tablet before the DTD exame, but I did not for some reason...

...By the way, nice Škoda design, what did Pelikán said?

Congrats, A4 size is IMHO the best one, big enough not to be limited and small enough to make it easy to work with. I'm damn sure you'll use it to make some gorgeous works. I'm looking forward.
Hey! I would really appreciate chance to try your tablet, unfortunetly I'm leaving Pilsen on Wednesday (the 1st of JU) and returning the 13th so it depends on your arrival.
As for the skoda design I'm not sure about Pelikans opinion as I sent it via email... but I'm not very happy with the result myself.

Fregy great stuff. I don't have too much to say about what you are doing as a few others here have said it best. Just keep drawing as you seem to be on the right path and listen to your teachers, yet stick to your interests. I have met many a pro or read interviews where some teachers in their past seemed to be against in some ways their interest in doing art in the comic book field, video games, film, etc. Yet in the end the students did what they wanted. I have been lucky to have supportive teachers in the past with doing the type of art I wanted to do. Still respect and take all the information you can from any teacher as what they give you could very well help you with where ever you want to go with your art.

cool stuff, going to echo everyone else and say your machines are looking pretty good. you were asking about the next steps in character design and i would suggest costume and clothing, it will take you far. ca's own references forum has some great threads to get you started. you can also work on giving them some expression and character too.
and now that you have access to a tablet it will be interesting to see what you do with colour! good luck :)

Hey, I like your figure drawing stuff. The robot designs are cool. Some of your figures seems kinda stiff though. Check out this (http://conceptart.org/forums/showpost.php?p=1798617&postcount=22) post. It might help with that. Good luck with the structure of man DVDs. After a while you'll be able to start drawing the human figure from your mind just like the DVDs says.

Ok, so I still try to learn more about human anattomy and figure. Now I am working on the head. It's kind of harder than I thought, I am able to draw basic head with it's proportions from my mind. But I still need to work a lot on making it look like human beeing. Any comments are very wellcome. What next step should I take in impoveing the head part? I guess I'll start to do portraits and stuff.

So, after a long brake I post something new. I didnt stop drawing tho. I was studying the anatomy as I said, and I thought it might be boring just post the same things over and over again. So since I finally know the muscles and their location I started to work on poses. Here is a bunch. For better practice I did some studies from pose maniacs and those poses with a red dot have been done with no refference. Any comments are very wellcome. :yayca:

Work from today. I went throught some tutoriasl about how to draw gesture drawing. So here is the result of my learning. The first pictures are done with refference from posemaniacs, the second are done form my mind. Any comments are VERY wellcome. Thank you. :yayca:

So as I said I looked up bunch of tutoryals. I think it helped me a lot. My focus was dynamic and action poses. Anatomy and proportions will be added later, once I ll be able to do good action poses. So, the plan so far is to practice the poses and move on to an another pose tutorial. :yayca:

all the pics were done with no refferenc

Great Anatomy Studies you have got going on in here (something I am starting myself).

Personally I don't think there's anything wrong with them, at least as far as I can tell. Just keep at it and more people will start commenting eventually.
What I would recommend is maybe starting to do some more detailed sketches, really focusing on one area, such as hands (for example), then start looking into the finer details of their structure.

Keep up the good work.

So, another figure practice. I did it in a class room, hiding it so teacher doesnt get mad that I am not paying attention. :yayca: Went throught another tutorial, head as I said before. Here is the result... I still need to practice a lot, this is with no reff I am trying to memoryze everything by endless practicing. I really like the sense of motion i get from your figure drawings! the poses you draw really feel like they're moving and not just standing there. Though some of the more still-poses seem like they're floating a bit, but that's probably just because there's no background :P

very nice sir :D

Hey there, I can see a lot of sketches here, nice work but I recommend you to practise some working with charcoal on white/brown paper 100x70cm - It reall helps, you can focus on pose, anathomy and general overlook.
About faces? Dont give me wrong but you should stop drawing expressions and instead draw some precise head anatomical studies (grammar/vocabulator mailfunction?) and then go up to the harder stuff. First head construction, skull, muscules, skin, lightning. Then expression. And I encourage you to take your sketchbook everywhere you go draw a lot your friends and random people(better if they don't know about it - face expression will be more natural). That's all from me. Keep on working :D

Nice amount of studies. It looks like your getting down the form and volume rather quickly.

Thank you for the reply in my sketchbook. To reply back: Thank you. I do draw lots, but I feel like I can draw even more. I don't come to a three hours a day, like you do. I have a main focus which I study upon: Anatomy. Right now I'm tackling hands. But furthermore I just draw what I feel like. It has to be fun and a learning experience at the same time. The studies are from George Bridgman: Link to amazon (http://www.amazon.com/Bridgmans-Complete-Guide-Drawing-Life/dp/1402766785/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1269452398&sr=8-1)
