Pardon Me..While I go Die...

Seriously Wes. You have something great there. I'd like to know where you are going to be directing your work towards. I would assume you are caught in between Fine Arts and Illustration to pay the rent.

I would love to see a very crisp/tight finished piece.

I can't wait to get my new stuff up. I should have my knew site in Dec.

November 17th, 2003, 01:03 PM
thanks guys

jmascho- heh thanks man. yeah as soon as i get some digital picture of paintings ill post them

stephen- heyyy man, yeah im finishing up school in may...maybe ill end up in LA i dont know yet. ill be out there at some point sooner or later

deth jester- thanks man

joshuathejames- hey thanks man, yeah i tend to work more on my fine art stuff and do freelance concept work on the side and this sort of stuff in my sketchbook. more finished work? yeah its coming, as soon as i get some photographs of it all...keep in mind this is just my sketchbook

jaku- thanks, and yes, unless otherwise stated, everything is drawn from my head or from life. there are only a few that have stuff done from ref

gasmask, rudecorleone,sammy- thanks guys

ericdee- heheh thanks, i dont even drink coffee though

roger, danvd- thanks

gekitsu- well all of these posted so far are right out of my sketchbook which is 8.5" x 11"..letter size. i guess for working on large scale drawings though, the best advice i have is to just tackle it and start working away at whatever youre doing. it might take a while for something to form, but dont give up. try using charcoal or paint or something that you can cover large areas quickly or broadly and then refine from there. also dont get caught up ion little details at first.

fipse, landmate, endregan, donkeyslayer- thanks guys

lungbug- hey man, thanks, your sketchbook thread is looking great, hope to see some more

capt. harlock- heh yeah he does look a bit like ron jeremy. oh yeah those two star wars guys are actually from a picture of me and my friend on halloween a couple weeks ago. im wearing a c3po helmet and a button up shirt and black tie. my buddy doan was wearing a nien nunb mask heh.

metalwinds- thanks man, those two drawings of the girl were probably around half an hour to an hour each..? im not sure...she posed for a while for each

I've been lurking around your posts and sites for a while now and apparently I'm not the only one drawing inspiration. Wes, it's so cool the way you handle value. I'm just starting out as an art student and was wondering if you could give me any helpful pointers in those areas. Y'know what to practice and stuff. And it looks like you use pretty soft pencils as well. What's your standard sketching tool? You really need to add some tuts or something when you update your site. I absolutely love your faces. Sorry to flood you with compliments. I just really love your stuff. Keep it up. I'll be lookn' for updates.

ill try to do another mass scanning binge sometime soon so i can post some more stuff
ill try to scan some of the self portraits, there are tons, so ill probably just scan a few.

zebzfree- just sketch from life as much as you can. as for tools, i mostly just use H,F,HB,and 2B wooden pencils and sometimes a .5mm mechanical pencil. usually just whatever i can find lying around.

atmospheria- i mostly do the traditional stuff and sketches, but i do freelance concept stuff on the side when i get time.

wassup wes,

ive been a fan of your stuff for like a year now.. i actually knew about your site before i knew about this one, i think i followed the link on jon foster's site.. you and coro's site inspired me to join.. you and him have inspired me to sketch a lot more than i did before.. ive seen improvement since that old site.. mainly in your composition and environments, use of abstract design and geometric form and such.. always a pleasure when u post.. thats cool that you listen to hip hop too.. when i hear the song Respiration, i think of a really bleak concrete city under a bright evening sky.. i like your take on it though..
only suggestion i can think of is to push you expressions some more, and gestures.. your gestures are already good, i think you can challenge yourself to push em even further..

Incredible stuff,
i love the composition aspect of all your out of heads sketches...
You got a sense of shading without ref which is really amazing!
How did you acquire it the most? drawing from life?
You finished your school sometime ago right?
the thing is i'm starting art school next year, i don't know what to expect, any tips or advices would be great if you have the time, 'cause i really dig your technique...
Final silly question, what pencils? :p ya know, always thinking the tool make the artist, an illusion to survive your sketches :)

Thx for posting theses, that is partially why i wanna devot my life to art...

I dig all the work from austin, and I was excited to hear you put some song on repeat and work from there, I do the same so maybe im on the right track with my drawing sometime ;)

I would really dig to know what pencils you use soft like 2 or 4B, or hard ones 2H 4H, or a midtone, anything you use for your sketches would be cool to know. Thanks allot for the inspiration and I cant wait to see more :nerd:

wes - your stuff is the hotness.

looking at your art, to me, is like having a group of supermodels walk past you in a crowd - there's so much beauty that is displayed in such a quick amount of time that it's dizzying. When it's all over you know that you witnessed something beautiful but were too small and weak to completely comprehend it. To fully absorb each page I'd have to stare at it for a few hours - a few minutes is never enough.

in other words: it's good stuff.

I also wanted to say that "Black Star - Respiration" is one of my all time favorite songs ever and the artwork that you created through its inpiration goes with it very well. The train is a strong metaphoric element in the song, and I like the way you portrayed how it is moving through an abstract, almost free-forming track.

Anyways, keep growing so you can keep blowing us away.

I think your work is some of the first I saw on CA, but I forgot about it (shame on me). then months later I saw that you needed a room in the austin hotel thread and everyone started offering space in their rooms. then at the workshop people would point and whisper "that's wes9000" whenever you walked by. needless to say, people really like your work, so after returning from austin I had to check out your stuff (again).
yea. wow. you make good stuff, no reference required. even coro said you were scary cause you can paint in addition to drawing. I like to think your user id is wes9000 because you and your artwork are so advanced that both of you are from the future. (conversely, my jokes are so lame they're from the past) -.,-;;

Wes,

after meeting you, you should know that I rarely get excited by art. Most of the time I am just passing by, not noticing the world around me. Your work, combined with your silent personality has changed something for me though. You are a very special person. A sunspear thrusted high into the skies. Someone who will shine throughout the years to come. I envy you for all you have now and for all the things you once will be. I wish you the greatest luck of all on your artistic journey and I'm very proud to know ya.

I remember you from Austin now, and I'm extremely pissed that I missed an opportunity to say "hello" and watch over your shoulder while you sketched.

Your pages look like they grew organically; disparate visual ideas ebb and flow together as your imagination picks them up, turns them around and places them on the paper in a manner that is instantly recognizable and understandable to any viewer. The compositions remind me of Barron Storrey, except that your images are peaceful and natural while his are often alien and jarring.

wes, watching your sketchbook trade hands in the la quinta I knew you had to be someone I'd worshiped on the forums before...

then i found this thread:

http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=21651

(for those that haven't seen Wes' BFA show or his other threads, FRICKIN CLICK THIS)

and I was like OOOOOOOOOH *THAT* Wes!

I remember standing around after one of the life drawing sessions and talking briefly with you about cross hatching and how if you didn't end up doing any demos during the workshop that I definitely wanted to milk your brain for info cuz I so am not where I want to be yet....

and I could have said "by the way, your BFA show was so spectacular I actually considered travelling out there to see it....I was blown away, truly. How I didn't make the connection in Austin, I've got no idea...must have been the heat. :)

you're a spectacular talent, my friend - I'm eager to hear what your plans are - you're a ship with mass and velocity and the denizens of whatever planet you're aimed at are some lucky bastards.

I'd still love to milk your brain. you've got an amazing hatching style (even in pen!! you bastard!! ;) ) and your composition skills are out of this world. I'd love to see a WIP for some of your sketching (maybe there is one, I'll double check, but if there's not... ) I'm just so curious how these compositions fall out of your noggin and fit together so nicely.

thanks for all you share with the community, and it's amazing to see a talent such as yours continue to grow so visibly. Proof of how good the workshop was!! Jason/Andrew/Travis/Marko - thanks for giving us a workshop that even improves the already amazing talent present on this site!!!

(ok, sorry, that's probably WAY too much worship, so I'll stop gushing)

Thank God for the update! I've been refreshing these forever! LoL I really wish I could have seen your senior show in person too. Awesome work, man. I love how you're not afraid to use dark tones to pop out other parts of the image. Truely inspiring. I appreciate the work you do. It keeps my hands up in the air, reaching for the next rung on then ladder. Some of the great talent here just keeps the rest of us pluggin' away at our sketchbooks and you're one of those that keeps me going. Thanks a lot.

I wanted to ask you a question if it's cool with you. I've been in a community college for a couple years studying fine arts and a bit of graphic design. I'm hoping to get entrance into a school here in STL and I'm workin' on a portfolio to send their way. I know a lot of people say you shouldn't send in stuff drawn from your head or fantasy type stuff. Was that true of your portfolio? Do you recall what you sent in? I don't really mess with a great deal of media so I don't have a lot of variety there either. Just curious how your entrance was. Thanks in advance and keep up the great work.

Great work wes, really stunning stuff. The drawings from your head are equally as impressive as the work from refs, awesome skill. What would you say was the most important thing in order to develop that kinda ability with anatomy?

nice update wes. i like all of the images, you handle the pencils really well. all of the stuff from your head is strong and i can tell you are still learning. i like how you are experimenting with ways of drawing i.e. the marko page. the quick stuff is nice, i can see that you can sucessfully project a good concept on to the page in a short period of time, that is where the true skill lies. good stuff man, hope we can see some color soon.

shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit. If you keep on improving at this rate, I'm scared of what your stuff will be like in ten years. I really respect the fact that you do a lot of stuff out of the imagination. It just shows how well you know your stuff. Also, your work really reminds me the importance of gesture drawing as I can see a lot your figures start off with quick gestures (I think). keep it up man

Wow great stuff man. as usual. You are definetely one of my favorite artists here at conceptart. just amazing rendering skills. Give us more!

Kasper_P
August 7th, 2004, 04:32 AM
I guess the only reason you're posting is to please us, cause were not givin you any crits that could help you further... That alone says just how good you are.

I usually say, to the really good artists at CA that they need to make something new and experimenting. Try things out with paint, perspective enviroments and so on. Because almost all im seeing is faces, and persons. Really good rendered and it's unbelievable that it's all from your head. But (always a but :)) Experiment. I believe you could get really far with the awesome skills you already have.

So my best advice is that you try alot of things out.

Great dump Wes, really beautiful and occaisionally haunting stuff. There was a question I meant to ask you and that was what paper to you use for sketching? I've several sketchbooks by daler rowney but i find it very difficult to acheive a very dark tone. I use graphite pencils, hb, 2b and 4b. I've had to go to the extreme of an 8b to get those darks but i lose that crisp look to my crosshatching. Any advice mighty sketch lord?

your drawings are tasty and decadant, like cheesecake but bettter for you ^_^. You are incredibly talented and a huge source of inspiration...I really like the way your forms are all connected to each other by some element so your pages are just this mass of line and value. And its nice to see you kick up the dark darks, its rare to see anyone who has the courage to go really dark in their everyday drawing, but it adds a whole new level of richness to your sketches. Amazing stuff...
