Hey Guys
I have a bit of a problem finishing pictures.
Actually, i dont think i have ever finished a picture.
I just posted a pic in the crit section that is probably the closest to a finished pic i have.
I start drawing, everythings going fine, im liking the picture.
But by the time im half finished i start to dislike it, shortly after i hate it.
Its almost as though i have a fear of finishing a picture!
Has/does anyone else experienced/experience this?
Am i nuts?

It's called self-criticism which is what every artist should have. I vaporized much of my old stuff cuz of the same reason and I believe a lot of others have as well.
This is why you should use all these as sketches even if you spent more time with them, and archive them on your PC (in case of digital art) or somewhere and just continue to draw and improve. Just don't throw them out as they can help you understand your mistakes. I spent over a week on one piece months ago which I now consider a scrap sketch and I still can't produce a piece that I would consider "finished piece".

no, I think everybody has the same feeling as you are, me too.
at first, you have to control yourselves what is your goal and then finish it.
For me, when I think it's finish, I'll never changed anything afterall, never. Unless for the other purpose like for customer or for the other work, so I'll do that again.
It's your mind problem, Get used to it, and you'll be happier
Good luck :)

I used to have a similar problem, except I didn't start to hate it, I just would grow a little bored with it. Once I got it very near completion, I could see how it would look if I did finish it, but I wouldn't have the drive to take it the rest of the way, preferring instead to start something new.
This problem eventually worked itself out though once I picked up more speed. I could finish it before reaching that bored point, or before I got overly excited about new ideas.
You need to work through those times when you hate the art though, as that's when you improve. I find it easier now to do that, because I know it will look better eventually. I've been through a lot of bad stages and come out the other side with something I liked (or could at least live with).

Thanks for your responses guys!
Shinnoki: hehe, i have lots of colourfully worded self-criticism. Thankyou for the good advice.
OTTA : Thankyou for your input mate, your right about the discipline. I am definitely lacking that stuff.
J Wilson: That is what im talking about. Hit the nail on the head. Youve given me hope. Thanyou!
