Guys, Hello.
Just a quick note to say hi and to let you know that my new gallery site is now open. www.mahystudio.com
Please come on down and visit. I have a selection of images ranging from my time as a senior designer with Weta Workshop to my staple at the moment - Wizards of the Coast and other RPG and TCG companies. + a few other bits and pieces.
I'm still in the process of populating the different galleries (especially the LoTR and Narnia ones!) but hopefully there will be something in there to please.
Have fun.
Cheers
Warren Mahy:xpld:

Wow man, great site thanks for the link:) I just have to say that watching you guys from Weta on the "making of" DVD's for LOTR is what inspired me to get into concept art in the first place, so thanks:) Hope to see you around on the forums!

Hope you stick around and post, this site is a great community of friendly, helpful guys who´d love to learn from you aswell. :)
Riceface:
Dude, you win the asshole award...
That´s no way to welcome a new member even if all he had on his site was a single sketch on lined paper.
His site is probably interesting to every member in here. After all he contributed to one of the greatest showcases of conceptart ever released and the very reason why there are so many young artists on this website aspiring to draw and produce art for a living.

HI Warren!
If you come back - can I ask a question?
Oh hell, I'll ask anyway.
On the storyboard with the insert/reaction shot in the smaller rectangle, is that the normal way of presenting an insert? It looks cool and makes sense, just don't think I've ever seen it before. (In all the massive three or four full storyboards I've ever seen :).

Guys. Riceface has a point. I came across as being pretty self interested. I should have said within my first post that I'd love to hear from artists who might need some advice or feedback on their work....if they think I can help that is. My apologies.

MiniGoth,
I think the insert was purely the result of an addition to the storyboards after the first pass. From memory it wasn’t in the original sequence and it needed a reaction shot.
It was a few year back now but I’m not sure why I didn’t make it a normal sized panel and slot it in. Go figure. In saying all that, I believe the major job of a storyboard artist is to help the production crew pre-visualise the product, so if there is any way above and beyond the norm that you can achieve a better result, I say use it. As long as it’s staying on the storyline and not confusing the sequence. AND not standing on anyone’s toes.

Going off like that at a new member is not cool in any case. Even if your first post is a link to your site, it´s the best way of introducing yourself after all. :) The admins don´t like "Hi, I´m new here..." threads filling up these sections though. The perfect way of going about it would perhaps be posting some new work in the Finally Finished section along with the link to your site. Would probably give you alot more traffic aswell :)
Something simple like: "New site and new artwork" would do the trick

BTW it would be really nice to be able to see your work enlarged even more on your site :) love the 100 heads section, even if I believe there are a few heads too few :)

Great advice. Cheers. To be honest I'm brand spanking new to the world of forums so my knowledge of etiquette is somewhat lacking. The mahystudio site builder is doing exactly that! Soon you'll be able to click on the image and get it at a larger size.

Forum etiquette isn´t too hard, so you´ll probably learn pretty fast and common sense is all you really need to get along with everyone. :) If you have any specific questions there is a faq section that covers alot of subjects new users struggle with.
The sections are pretty self-explanitory, with the Finally Finished section being for high-level finished illustrations or concepts. :)

cool work. digging the graphite illustrations.
the site itself is a bit clumsy in operation and design though...

there's drop shadows on some typefaces for no real reason, the navigation is scattered into two parts. there's a gradient on the side navigation which impedes visibility. man, the work is awesome, but then youre packaging it as though you really don't care aesthetically about how it is presented.
keep the diesign simple, let the art be the focus, because its really strong.
welcome to CA 497737

Welcome. There are a lot of different personalities on here. You'll figure them out by and by.
No worries. The site is partly about "Look at me!" just as it's partly about help.
You help us. We help you. The folks in the Critique Center would love to hear from you. You might check into the gallery link at the top of the main page. You can place a gallery of some of your stuff on here and list your web address in that little profile thing the gallery feature will let you write.

Nice new site.
Dunno if you remember, we met at an MTG event in Auckland.
We were in front of your table all day, blocking off your customers. :P

Thought I would jump in here. Have lost my old account, so a new one works!

Yeah, the site only works correctly in standards compliant broswers (so I am not convinced that it doesn't work in Firefox, unless you are using a version before Firefox 2, which it is untested in...)
If you are looking at it in IE6 or below (it appears that Avant is based on IE6 or earlier), then it won't work properly either. I will look into some hacks for it, but my suggestion to you is to upgrade :)

None of those problems in google chrome, but they do appear in an old version of IE, so I think coward is right, its a matter of upgrading:)

Actually checking out Avant it appears to be built on the latest verion of IE, but Grief, your browser isn't displaying the transparent png files properly (the logo and the by-line) so I suspect you might need a later version of Avant too (?)
But yeah, check it out and let me know how you get on. The images on the front page should look fine for you now - just need to work on the other images :)

According to wikipedia IE has alot of problems with .png files before version 7. One of them is broken alpha-support (transparency info).
I´m guessing an updating of your browser will fix it, Grief. :) No reason to not use an updated browser anyways, right?

yeha my IE and FF were outdated and written of papyrus and stone respectively.. i keep away from the microsoft website *cough* not exactly the most legal copy of windows here *cough*
i keep avant updated regularly, but failed to realize that it was dependant on IE also being updated. (i prefer avant over firefox due to some paypal charging issues ive had on various sites, and the ability to zoom out on displayed images allows me to rescale images in the browser which is handy in the critique center)
thanks again folks, site looks much better now

Unfortunatly WoTC didn't like the blood and guts look of the skins, so I had to paint them fur side up. I liked the first pass better myself but what can ya do. Thanks for the comments, may aim is to get more up buy the weekend. :)

All good - cheers for pointing it out anyway - as IE6 and earlier don't have proper AJAX capability (loading parts of a page without it refreshing the whole thing) so I have noticed that I forgot to add that as well. Those with IE6 will have a nicer experience soon!

Wow, great to see this work! I was at the Royal Armouries in Leeds last week at a presentation given by Matt Appleton and Emily Jane Sturrok from Weta Workshop, dont know if you know them or not?
Anyway, i got to see your designs from LOTR in the weapons and armour that was on display, and they looked amazing!
Now you just need to convince Jeremy Bennet to get a site together too! Im another that got into the what im doing after seeing your work from the LOTR on the extended dvds, so im campaigning to get all the LOTR artists onto these forums :yayca:
Thanks for posting!
