Right now I'm a junior in high school and I'm really considering becoming a mutlimedia artist. I've always been a really good drawer and have been drawing since I was young, but never considered it as a possible job. To me it was always just an elective class and something fun to do. I've been practicing a lot lately, and have been seeing steady improvement.

My question is, what is it like finding / maintaining a job as a mutlimedia artist, and what kind of schooling is required? I don't want to go to an art school and spend time and money only to find that i can't get a job. :(

thanks

"Multimedia artist" is such a broad term as to be utterly useless in terms of giving you specific advice.

But in general, finding a job in the arts is not easy, but people who really want it manage. To paraphrase Randy Paush, all the barriers to your dreams are there to stop the other people; they won't stop you if this is really what your passionate about.

welcome to CA

start a sketchbook and get some of your work uploaded. its a good place to show your explorations and get feedback about what directions you could use to direct your work to where you want it. for further critical analysis of a specific work and how it operates post a finished image in the critique center. you'll get honest feedback of what works and doesnt work and how to fix it.

as far as what youve said, well here's the thing: don't even worry about finding a job. if you enjoy art and want to pursue it, then go for it. time in an art school will not be wasted if you are honestly putting effort into bettering your art. yea i know thats cheesey, but its true.

part of your education will be how to present yourself professionally. you will hopefully be outgoing and alert enough to make social networks with people working in the field as you do your studies. i mean heck there's countless professionals on THIS site. get your work up and don't be shy about asking questions. the more you speak up and grow as an artist, the more attention you'll get.

as far as maintaining a job, that really depends on your work ethic and the job situation. i can't say anything with certainty about the future, its obscure like that. weird, i know.

explain more about specifically what youre interested and ideally what sort of job youre looking into, maybe you already have a company you'd wan tto work for etc.

if you type it, people will read it.

Thanks for the replies.

Ideally I would like to get into the game industry for concept art for environments / characters, 3d modeling, storyboard. I'm not really sure what all there is to be honest.

I'll try to upload some things I've been drawing.

EDIT: alright i hope this works, its my first time uploading pictures

I drew this one in MS paint, no tablet, all mouse. Doing it in front of friend so no effort on the letters.

Drew this in ArtRage free version, took about 20 mins

WELL, then. That's a whole different story. You want to be a concept artist, eh.

Ok, you start to draw. Draw everything around you. Draw it constantly and pay attention to buildings and lots and lots of people. Then you start experimenting with colour and media. Then you may or may not want to go to school, but you don't really need it to become a concept artist, it just might help if you're so inclined. What you really need is to draw, every day, all the time, and really well. And learn all about art..Oh and you're probably going to want to start drawing your own characters.
