Dead Space just came out today. It's supposed to be like Event Horizon meets Alien meets Carpenter's The Thing filtered through Resident Evil 4.
And it's getting great reviews on Metacritic (http://www.metacritic.com/games/platforms/ps3/deadspace).
Anyone besides me getting it?
Oh, and I'd just like to mention that the creatures in the game's official concept art (http://www.destructoid.com/elephant/photo-m.phtml?photo_key=58387&post_key=100742) look scary as hell.

It looks interesting. I don't know if I'm going to buy it, but if a demo comes out for the PC I'll definitely be giving it a try.

I went to pick it up at the local Best Buy yesterday and they said they wont be getting it until tomorrow. God damnit.
(Tomorrow.. I will have my hands on it... the time to play it however, not so much. I'll sleep better knowing its there though... :P)

I kinda wanna get it, but at the same time I'm a big vagina when it comes to horror games
It wasn't until like 4 months ago that I finally worked up the balls to play Doom 3 haha

I'm the same way. I mean, I had trouble playing half life 2 for christ sakes. I'll probably get some diapers and tough this one out though.

I can already tell that when I play it, I'm more or less going to be doing this:
<walk 2 feet>
<quicksave>
<get scared by a steam vent or some piece of the place falling down>
<quicksave>
<walk another 2 feet>
<quicksave>
<think I hear something, fire blindly into that direction and run into the corner I just came from>
<quicksave>
<walk back to where I was, hear some form of breathing>
<quicksave>
<walk another 2 feet>
<quicksave>
<monster jumps out> "OH SHIT!"
<fire blindly>
<miss>

I talked with 2 people who are playing it right now and they say it is awesome. Definately one of those games to play in the dark.

Probably ravenholm, but it was damn near every part of it when shit would come around the corner and make me spill my nasty :( Parts that stand out include those houses on the highway where there seems to be a headcrab zombie everywhere you wouldn't expect it. I guess the thing is I hate when things 'startle' me. I love getting freaked out/scared while watching movies, but not when stuff just 'pops out' at you.
But as previously stated I'm a huge pussy when it comes to games. think mesh (seen below) with less screaming.

My approach is different:
God Mode Activated.
Infinite Ammo Activated.
All weapons.
And then just use whatever resembles a portable nuke and spam it while enjoying the scenery, the movieclips and the particle effects of every room's content getting evaporated into a fine mist of blood while I walk in.

I think that by far the scariest part of the Half-Life series is the bit on the stalker train in Episode 1. I've played plenty of games with zombies and freakishly mutated things and yet stalkers are pretty much the only enemies that really creep me out in any video game.
...and that's why I love them.
I can already tell that when I play it, I'm more or less going to be doing this:
That's basically how I played the first Half-Life.

Just got it a few hours ago. The hype it's getting as one of the scariest games of all time? Well-deserved.

Yeah, a lot of the impact comes from the shock factor. According to dev interviews, the game will have plenty of those sadistically timed so you'd never expect them.
And I would love to see mesh play dead space. His doom 3 run had me in stitches.
Ninjacat - glad to hear that. I'm quivering in anticipation now. How far are you into it?

I'm still very early in the game. I just finished Chapter 1.

I just got this for the PS3 a couple of days ago. This game is great and by great I mean pretty fucking vile. The creature designs are sickening in the best way possible. This is why it pays to design monsters with great silhouettes and it only gets better when you see them shambling, flopping or dragging themselves close to you and you see that the designs are all distortions of human anatomy. A lot of which are very inventive. What's not to love about headless corpses with skin stretched from their legs to their open rib cages to form crude wings?
I love the environments as well. All the subtly morbid ribbed structures, the cold hospital lights and bits of scattered debris make almost every area unsettling. While survival horror games typically all barrow from a cliched slasher motif of grit and strobe lights, the open areas in this are quite refreshing, and even beautiful. I loved the ships bridge with the huge open glass blister looking out on to the meteor shower. The gardens were great as well. I'm on chapter 6 and I hope the diversity in the game's environments continues to surprise me.

Actually, that was the impression I got from the game so far. Definitely not a bad thing, from my experience.

I'm at Chapter 7 right now. I don't think I've seen "Boo!" moments utilized so well in a game before. Oh, and the boss designs are killer.
Also, whoever designed those goddamned speedy creatures in Chapter 9 officially earns kudos from me. Congratulations for freaking me out on numerous occasions.

The inventory system is all right. It does add a sense of urgency and panic to the game, but trying to refill your stasis or whatnot with a horde of freakish monsters on your ass is pretty annoying.

Shooting limbs off things is terribly satisfying. I only wish I could turn around more quickly; It never fails that when I chase after a fleeing baddie as soon as I think I got him a pair of claws slowly hover over my shoulders...

I saw a commercial for a cartoon....I think it was a prequel to the game. Has anyone seen it? It looks decent, though I haven't played the game yet so I dont know if the story would be wasted on me or not.
