Im Moh, and I'm 24 (2009)...Im lazy but I love to create nice pretty pictures.

Anyway, my sketcbook is mainly for characters but will have other designs as well.
I will be updating daily (when possible) and I hope to improve a lot faster this year. So with all your critiques and help im sure I can manage that :)

Main character concept:

Trying different approaches to the armour design and colour... Fail!

Really nice stuff here Mohzart! Really liking those armour studies and those shooter game shots!
I agree with you regarding anatomy, however I believe you might want to watch your perspective aswell. In some places its a bit hard to read and things appear flatter than I imagine you want them to be.
Keep up the good work!

Demon Prince character development

First sketch for my Demon;Just a sketch of an idea of what he will look like; Obviously demonic characters should look evil and blood thirsty. Demons are sort of mischievous so I gave him a bit of a cheeky grin to give him a psychotic attitude.

Its been a while since I last updated.

I wanted to create a character I had in my dream the other day. It was quite odd and possibly nothing that I would design myself.

Here is a sketch of the character. I called him Pow Blader, but he ended up looking like a Syth so I called him Darth Blader instead :)

Some Portraits of the alien follows. Got some inspiration from Frank Frazetta! :D

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c380/mohzart/Wraithportrait.jpg

Ok, here's another Concept for a different type of alien. More thinner and flexible.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c380/mohzart/WraithStealthcopy.jpg

I didnt want him to have armour, so I gave him a sort of a "bondage" type clothing ;) lol Voldo style.

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c380/mohzart/ideaconcept-1.jpg

Aaaaand a quick sketch for the Back design, too.

Wonderful design there man! Especially your mechas/armors, your works really inspire me to train more on drawing that. I find it sometimes hard to design good looking mechas/armors.

Keep on the good works!

Nice forum so far. My most favourite picture is the one with runing guy with red blades. Love the action, looks like he is going to run through my LCD every second. I just had to use it as a wallpaper, like it a lot. Great job :)

Stunning job on the shading and color on this update. Trying feeling the character a bit more before going foward tho. If you are satisfied with the scale and persona of the head, you wont allow for perspective mistakes when you go for the chest volumes...nice job here.

**Colour study**

I'm trying to an accurate colourisation of the umbrella's shade on the character and cant really manage it. It's hard enough trying to find reference materials and cant really experiment in reality right now. No sun, no blue plastic sheet...

By all means please construct me with your criticism.

Im aiming for a post-apocalyptic atmosphere focusing, obviously, mainly on the character and it's design. I was looking at AS WARS and I've sprung up some nice ideas at the start. Now I'm starting to think back to Nausicaa of the valley of the wind's characters, and hopefully get a nice 80s japanese art going on.

wow great man, could u teach me some about ur paint strukture and rutin ? i would like to here how u working progress is...
thx for answer !!!

Hey thanks!
Umm my painting structure is mostly improvised. I dont have a set style or method. I go with the flow and whatever tools I find along the way then I use them if theyre useful to what I'm trying to paint. But I tend to focus on what matters the most to me in my paintings. Like metal textures and clothes, they need different brushes to get the right strokes..If there's anything specific youd like to ask go ahead.

OK since I havent posted anything good for a few days I think I'll post something I decided to do in regards to my character designing AND Lighting. It's a quick thought process and the aim is to show some stages of how I work. Think of it as a simple tutorial :)

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c380/mohzart/1-2.jpg

http://i31.photobucket.com/albums/c380/mohzart/2-2.jpg

I decided to go with a 'smart' looking character. Theres a lot of animes that inspired me to make this guy. Like Zangetsu from Bleach, Vincent from Cowboy Bebop: Knockin on heavens door, Aaaand CP9 Rob Lucci from One Piece.

Hey Mozhart! Some animation skills are really on display! What program are you using to put them together? Your concepting skill are nigh lacking either. Hope you don't mind me popping in! Would really like to see more anatomy studies here too, who are you looking at, Hogarth?

Thanks for popping in! for the animations, I'm using Photoshop :) It's really simple and easy to use. I only discovered it a few days ago so you can see how easy it must be! hehe. As for the anatomies, I rarely show my studies on here because I merge them with my character designs. So basically I study right before I design a character.
I havent really looked at many artists for that subject to be honest... I've only just recently picked up a book on Loomis and Bridgman. But I havent got the chance to study anything out of them... heh...
I studied some Da Vinci back in College though :)

Hey man awesome stuff.

I would like to see a bit more interaction with you characters, as in characters interacting with each other or objects, they're all kinda just standing there with an in your face badass attitude; for example it would be nice to see a shoot out sequence, or some characters battling each other, some every day stuff would be cool to, someone using a computer, a conversation or drinking a cup of coffee. Draw out a story board or some panels from a movie.

I was reading an article about comics the otherday and they said they most of the time the problem with portfolios is that really great artists forget to focus on the more mundane aspects of life in their artworks, like people walking through the park and feeding birds. Portfolios full of "Hero Stances" just dont show the artists full ability to express emotion they said.

Go outside with your sketch book and observe humans in their natural habitat.

I'd also say your pigeon holing yourself with to much anime inspired coloring and construction, but that could also be your chosen niche.

Anyway your artwork is totally awesome, but i doubt you need me to tell you that.

I would like to see a bit more interaction with you characters,

Good advice there. I was thinking about this earlier that I never make my characters interact with anything like you said.
It's probably become a habit of mine as a, concept artist, that I create characters this way for clients. And what clients want is the general idea of the character and to be done in a short amount of time of course. So no fancy stuff is needed since the piece will go back and forth with feedback for change etc.

I will take in your suggestion though for future reference. I'll certainly try out some paintings with more interactions. As for the influence, my work is majorly fed off my own interests, and if it coincides with the clients then so be it. if not ill do my research on the spot and make the change :)

Thanks man! :D

laxon - Youre welcome :)
Joce - Thanks :)

I like the lighting a lot, and the overall feeling is very much like a level in a video game. Some minor crits, more like suggestions i have would be to under-exagerate the perspective for such a low shot angle. what I mean by this is the left and right lines could be placed at a closer angle to the more middle ground lines, and still achieve the effect that everything is tall, and your looking down. One other thing to consider is camera placement, while the viewing point is great on the z,x axis (depth and width), the camera could be placed higher on the y and still achieve the same effect you have currently while being more dynamic. Just my two cents.

Great SB so far man! Keep it up.

UPDATE! BIAATCH WIP!!!!

My version of the last day on earth.

One of the Archangels, Azraeil (AKA Angel of Death), descends to Earth to collect all the remaining souls. There is a choice given to those he approaches, either submit or be taken. There are those who treasure their lives to try to escape death, even when it's right before their eyes, they still...run... Bad move.

Azraeil, like all angels, is created from light and holds his soul gathering blade 'Moute-Rouh'. Once this blade tastes even a drop of blood from a living being, their soul is immediately drawn by it and released to the heavens where they await their first judgment.

you said harsh crits so i'll try.
It looks like you're using the wrong brushes and your approach to lighting is a bit lacking.
I think for the wispy type things you need something very soft and fluid, with dodging properties. If he is glowing you need so use the right tools for that. some options include dodge brush, dodge or screen layer, glow effect on layer...Simply painting with a soft round wont do and be mindful of high contrast areas within the figure. I like the blade. the wings arent working so far, try a feather shape with high spacing.
the anatomy is mostly pretty good just a few things here and there could be adjusted.
the design of the character is good so thats a major plus.
with the environments avoid centered composition, ie symmetrical balance.
asymmetry=interest
You're tackling some difficult things so keep at it, you'll be fine.

So very true. This is the kind of crits I need. I was thinking of starting again and delete this picture altogether. The major problem is the composition right now. I think if I get rid of the smoke/souls coming out of the blade, the image would be more balanced. then my mind wont be so confused and clashing with what needs to be done.
I think I'll start again actually. I'm not happy with this at all :) Only the blade :D

Well, I like the characters nonetheless!!! :) The last one is a bit to narrow around the hip region and the legs are slightly to short, plus the baggy pants makes them appear kinda too straight, so you can't guess the legs' proportions that easy.

I could't have done it any better, but you asked for harsh crits, lol!!! :)

This is really nice stuff man. I'd like to see some backgrounds for the characters, but admittedly, that's more personal taste in art than actual critique. They serve their purpose just fine as is.

You've got a good feeling for a lot of the basics and it really shows. You work well with clothing, too - something I struggle with a fair amount. That "No. 1" above is a really cool character, got a good flow to him.

Please continue posting your work. I'd love to keep up with it.
