Is this guy supposed to be some futuristic sand warrior? Any kind of search is feeding me his life story with people and planets I've never heard of.

I would recommend watching at least one of the versions of Dune - there's at least one movie and at least one made for tv mini series. Research is part of CHOW.
All the best,

Ohhh! FUN! I remember Stilgar, it's been awhile since I read the books. I remember them being completely covered all the time. But, I'll have to go back and see what wasn't covered in their caves. Or, I'm pretty sure they were stripped nearly naked when fighting for the title. So maybe that?
Just rambling sorry. Anyone know if I could possibly read the story again online?

Here's a sketch of the style I'm going to go with... I have redesigned the single combat knife, going to give the still suit some tribal embellishment (oz style aboriginie), added a pocho to protect from sand storms (will try to give it aboriginie style comoflage) and as Frank was supposed to have based fremen in part on the Bedouin I will give them a really rich deep blue colour skeme that the Bedouin are famous for which I think will work as a respect to the spice which turns the eyes a similar blue!
That's the plan anyway, lets see if I can pull it of convincingly! I am so exited and full of ideas for this round, if only my painting skillls were up to my ideas... must practice more!!!!

here's a quick sketch I did at work today.. I really like the topic and my idea was to frame it like a moviestill. But I'm afraid I won't really have enough time to finish it this week. Lotsa stuff to do.

October 14th, 2008, 03:22 PM
Pixeltuner - A great looking sketch and I suppose it doesnt matter if you dont get to finish it but... your image is very like the film versions of fremen and although good they have been done. Maybe try to put your own twist on the design if you can.
Try to finish though it has real potential!

thx! To be honest, I'm not that much of a Dune-expert so this is what I came up with after consulting some ref. (mostly from the movie indeed) Getting to grips with the material at hand is key before actually putting your own stuff in it. At least, that's how I approach it. :)

October 14th, 2008, 04:03 PM
Well, this is a sketch and then I tried out some quick colours in Photoshop.
Will tidy this up and perhaps make more of an illustration out of it :) And no... Im not scared of drawing hands or feet but I ran out of time today :geekg:

Foofea: Haha! My thought exactly. :D
And "Spice must flooow".
Pixeltuner niiice! His thigh seems long though and the foreshortening could use more thigh visible behind the knee, er, underneath.
Cowboy surfer nice design! Looking forward to seeing this detailed.
Daray I love the design but I think he would be awfully slim underneath those clothes.
I will be doomed if I pass on this!!
I love Stilgar so much! I always imagined him as this larger than life figure (with lots of facial hair... :^^:).
So here goes the thumbnail.
Not much design yet. Focusing on portraying that strength the character has. Not happy with his pose yet. :(
I need to change his leg some more and make it come more towards us, since i'm heading for a slightly upshot view.
I think I'll also brighten the whole thing more.

hahaha great character, unfortunately (or fortunately) my first impression was dune by david lynch way back in 80s, when muadib spot bad hairstyle....
alternative approach to movie maybe some futuristic islamic/ arabic theme (various jihad reference from paul's vision in 1st novel)! will definitely try this out, been CHOWless for weeks now!!!
"god created Arrakis to test the faithful" (? LOL)
edit1:
my reference, sun tanned/ burned exposed area, arabic/ middle-eastern nomad will probably try tp present two rendering, one under-the-hood, sitch "casual wear" and the other is more "dessert style"...

Wont be able to finish this, have a four day golf tournament starting thursday. Tried to go for the tired warrior type approach, I intended for him to be sitting on some rocks, left arm foreshortening probs. Will finish him later but not before deadline.
Looks good guys, I think either really push the futuristic desert style or go body suit tech. I haven't read the books, but I have seen Sting try to act. The movies great.
EDIT: I chucked some colour at it. Shardana - I have listened about getting things non blurry but this was really quick and basic. Will sharpen it up.
EDIT 2:- back from weekend away and really tired. Tightened it up a little but not enough. eh - totally forgot about the spice eyes. Anyway, I dont think I will finish before deadline. great topic and enteries so far guys.

Nice stuff so far guys!
I did a few sketches and all of them didn't turn out very well until this one. I hope I showed enough of his face. I always pictured Taureg type people when I think of the Fremen. So, it's loosely based off of the pictures I could find over in the Chow inspiration thread, the Earth Alpha.
EDIT: added another WIP, and I tried to fix some things from my first. But, now that it's on here, and flipped, I can see a lot more problems.

OMG....must...do...this.
Dune has been one of my favourite books since I was four or five. Seriously. My dad used to read it aloud to my mom in the evenings, and I would sneak in and listen to them. Then I'd climb the bookshelves during the day and read ahead. My parents thought it was cute and encouraged me.
The movies are so-so. Each one has strong points and weak points. I think there might be a tendancy to go with already establish visuals if you go off of the movies though.

The artists that worked on the original dune movie designs are 2 of my favourite, giger and moebius... So I guess I got a lot of my style influences from them in the first place.

Oh goddamit! I'm just not getting it right.
I tried going with a different pose but it's just awfully stiff.
Hrm! I'll do another few I guess. :/
492422

not so groovy. :(
Decaying Lolita: He looks very young and the broad hips and big eyes give him a slightly girlish look. :)

October 15th, 2008, 12:28 PM

Digtallydumbfounded: the arms seem glued to his sides...adding some space between might make his pose seem more natural I think. :)
MJ_Alcazar
October 15th, 2008, 01:26 PM
Ok, going to try to fit some crits in, don't have a lot of time before I have to go back to class.
Decaying Lolita - I like the design, but he looks like a girl. The hips I think are the problem.
gtgauvin - like the pose, but I agree that the torso is a little on the long side.
Vorace - awesome sketches, I like the bottom one the best.
Foofea - I do like the face. The body is stiff and off balance. His feet need to be more centered. I think if you drew a line down from his neck as his center of gravity you could see how he should be standing better.
Digitally Dumbfounded - I had the same problem doing this, I just had to keep drawing sketches until I finally got the body the way I wanted it, sorta. Don't give up, keep at it!
Ninetales - I like his face.
D-Baker - I believe his legs are a little bit too short. They are also crooked. His left knee is bent at an odd angle and his right seems unbalanced, possible because of the left. I like your direction.

Small update, changed the pose and stuff. He is supposed to be riding one of them sandworm thingies. The scale probably isnt correct, I had trouble with the foreshortening! Other than that, this is just another rough design Idea, but probably the one I will focus one :)

I've really been researching this one, got my copy of DUNE out and also had a very in depth discussion with an associate of mine about the practicalities of a stillsuit, desert people, colour scemes, equipment and so on.
I was thinking of replicating the Aboriginal bushman stance, but I'm having a lot of trouble finding references, all I keep getting is yoga people :[ Might have to take a few of my own when I get home.

Okay, there were a few things I liked about the first try there, but I think that the image is fundamentally unsalvageable, so I'm going back to the drawing board on this one. Had some more spare time to scratch out a portrait at work, just for fun.

Then, Halloween came early to my household.

Lovely reference you got there, gtgauvin!
I havenīt done anything like this in SUCH a long time it makes me ill. So I decided to give it a go. Sketched this one out at work, trying to nail the values and the composition before attacking color and detail.
Indeed, I donīt even know how my Stilgar will look like. I kinda had in mind to unite Dune with Easy Rider... :D Maybe Iīm doing the whole thing wrong way around, but I thought Iīd try to produce a nice illustration - not a character concept.
So letīs see....

Unfortunatly, I've only got a cruddy dial-up connection so alot of the pics are showing up as red x's. But the ones I can see are looking mint.
Foofa - Your WIP is almost exactly what I was planning on doing when I saw the CHOW was Stilgar. Damn I hate being reminded of my rampant unoriginality :)
D-baker - Love'n Stilgars' mohawk
Here's my first shot at it, quick portrait and costume design.

October 16th, 2008, 01:46 PM
Mmm...I made him smile haha...dunno if I should keep that.
Hiipi: nice action. :D
Hungryan: good colors. The weapon in Stilgar's hand looks very heavy, so his stance seems to be kind of unrealistic. Maybe putting the weapon over the shoulder? Unless he's really that strong. :P
Sceptical Saint: Remember to keep your proportions in check. :) The concept is very nice.

GtGauvin: Now that's creative! :D
Lol. Are those backpack straps I'm seeing. Loving it.
So, I rethought some design choices.
493220
Now he looks a bit like an Evangelion/Spawn mixture. :/
Heh, anyway.
I've been struggling so much with the pose and general expression, but here he goes, Captain grumpy. :^^:
Daray: Rofl. I had to google fringe and the imagery I got collided with the mental image of Stilgar I had in my mind made my day. :D Like the new version. But yeah, I was wondering, weren't they standing on the worms? Otherwise he might be kneeling. Those things where QUITE massiv, so I think he couldn't sit like that?
MJ: Thanks!! Yeah, sometimes you just need to keep on working till it fits.
I like your design. And HUGE improvement you made since I last stumbled in here. :)
Hungryan: I love all about this but the cropping! The legs just seem so cut off. Or maybe you could close his legs more? :)
Rest: People, this looks like it's going to be a round of epic quality!! LIke much what's going on here. :^^:
Edit: On a sidenote I just googled Fremen and landed straight on Dougbot'S blog. Damn, you people are everywhere. ;P

From Dune - A description of Stilgar
"The hooded head turned at Paul's movement, opening a wedge of face to moonlight. Jessica saw a sharp nose, one glinting eye, dark so dark the eye - a heavy brow and an up turned moustache."

Did a paintover of my own pic and found out (sort of) what was bothering me in his stance. It looks slightly better now. I'm liking the mirrored version of this better, I have a tendency of drawing everyone left handed, no clue why, so the right handedness looks better. I'm still working on the other pose also, not sure which one I'll go with.
Gtgauvin- like the stance in the reference!

Wow...I've never heard of Dune before, and I'm sure I'll be executed for that. I checked out a couple of Youtubes of the show(?) and it was pretty intruiging! I'll have to look for the movie.

Quick re-visit.
Someone pointed out that they actually stood on their worms, and I remember that yes they did. So I tried it out and I think it might works better. I think I will resize the canvas so that I can get more worm on to the picture - to emphasize its enormous size... hard to make it look REALLY big if I only show a little piece of it.
But yeah baby yeah - imagine Manowarīs Wheels of Fire playing inside his stillsuit!

Small changes, cropping the picture so that there's more cut from the leg (thank you for pointing out that there's something wrong around there DigitallyDumbfounded), detailing a bit more, and changing the angle of the worm-calling thumping thingy, so now it rests on the knee of the guy. So Ninetales, it's not supposed to be a weapon, if I remember right from the books there was something like that there. :)

Excuse me,Foofea but that guy's looks too big for the body...
Judging by the current state I'd recommend u resizing that body...
The drawing is spot on,It's really dynamic and anatomy is great, only that face of his is throwing a great picture off-balance...
Thanks 3vil :) Its still changing as I go over it - its meant to be extreme perspective, but i need practice lol.

I love the colors and the painterly feel Hiipi!
I think that this would feel faster and more dynamic if everything were angled to the bottom right hand corner. Since we read left to right, top to bottom, it makes sense that the angle would point rightwards and downwards to our mind. With him angled the way he is, it feels like he's about to fly off backwards! Which could make a pretty cool follow up piece actually...
Lovin it so far!

Here's what I've got so far.
Some questions:
- does this look too dark (or light, or not contrasty enough) on people's monitors? It looks quite different on the CRT at work than on the LCD at home.
- is too much Gordon Freeman and not enough Fremen?
- anyone have helpful thoughts about his stance? It looked pretty good in the pencil version but that was skewed and I think I screwed things up in the process of straightening it.
kiwigarbage
October 17th, 2008, 12:14 PM
Cool composition Vineris!
As to his stance...I think he's supposed to be walking toward the viewer correct? Try pushing his hanging arm behind him a bit, and pulling his stepping leg further forward. Also, I think that his thighs are too long.

October 17th, 2008, 12:14 PM
Ok.
I'm indecsive about the amount of cape .
494042494043
Wich one do you think is better?
Also, I like how the environment is turning out but not the character. :er:
Or probably the background is to much?
Kiwigarbage: Same here. That's why I try black and white first and will add in color later. :)
Hiipi: To be honest, I liked the first one better. I was the one who said that they where standing on the worms, but maybe yours is a baby worm. :^^;
Now he feels a bit squished by the top end of the painting.
Hungryan: I like how this is developing but I still feel he cuts the picture in half a bit. Maybe you can expand the canvas size a bit above his head?
kiwigarbage
October 17th, 2008, 12:22 PM
DigitallyDumbfounded: Heh, maybe I should take that route next time. I think that the cape to the right is too much, and the cape to the left isn't enough. Try blowing it in almost a spiral over itself from left to right towards that top corner....Did that make sense? I like the style of this one.

Crits!
cowboysurfer - I like the poncho concept! Right now he seems to be mostly leg, and it's weird that his arms end around the same place where most people's elbows would be. I think you need to change those proportions or reference a worm's-eye-view more.
Pixeltuner - the worm is cool, but I'm not sure about the composition all being squished over to the side like that. Right now it's unclear how his hand is holding the knife, but I assume that will change in the final. Good colours.
Daray - interesting design! The foreshortened leg in the second one doesn't look quite right to me.
Vampirehungerstrike - good start!
Foofea - Good action pose! His head still seems too big to me, you need to work on the forced perspective a bit more. :)
UCT - looks great so far!
invinciblewombat - his legs seem on the long side, especially the calves. Pretty good otherwise.
Vorace - sweet designs!
gtgauvin - I like the different design. I think I need to see more before I can say more, though. :)
Decayinglolita - those eyes make him look too feminine, and he could use wider shoulders. More reference!
D-BAKER - awesome design and a very different look! His face looks a bit too flat, though, and the lighting sources seem inconsistent to me.
tim - nice painting style! I think Stilgar needs a bit more work, though. The face looks quite crude and there's no way anyone could be flung up in the air with a grip like that, it's completely unbelieveable.
Hiipi - very nice! I like all the versions.
Hungryan - good colours, cool design. Something about his face bothers me. I think it's either the droopy eye or the fact that the mouth is incredibly close to his nose.
Sceptical Saint - I like the costume design. What're those things on his chin in the second picture? They look kinda scabby.
YihyoungLi - the face looks a bit too filled out for someone living in a harsh environment, and the colours are a bit dull. Very nice otherwise!
vibhas_virwani - I'm not sure the head and suit match up. His neck seems closer to the closer shoulder than the far one, and the tilt of the head seems awkward with the tilt of the chest. You probably want to reference the upper body more!
patr1ot - Welcome! Right now it seems like you've given him some very exaggerated proportions (super short legs, barrel torso), but the painting style looks realistic. I'm not sure that's working out all that well. He could use more variation in value, too.
MJ Alcazar - Nice! Good solid stance. I like the little turban thing. I'd widen his shoulders a bit and give him more neck. Don't forget to use construction lines on the face to help line up the eyes!
kiwigarbage - pretty good! Although his legs look awfully long and something about his right thigh/knee bothers me. Try to avoid using white for highlights (at least for now), and pay attention to where the light is coming from! His face is lit from the front/right, his body is lit from the side/left and he dunes in the background seem to be lit from the back/right. If you're stuck, look for a photo that has approximately the kind of lighting you want and see how the shadows/highlights look.
Digitallydumbfounded - I think the big cape is overkill. I think he could use a slightly more dynamic stance, right now he's really hunched into himself and static. The cape touching the top of the picture looks a bit awkward.
Verehin - cool. I think he might need slightly more neck and a little less leg.
DigitallyDumbfounded
October 17th, 2008, 01:48 PM
Vibhas Virwani: His shoulder facing away from us is too low.
Also, since he seems to have a rather thick armor he'd be slimer underneath. Now, that works with your proportions. No problem but the head would be really large and too far from his shoulder. :)
try probably sketching in his body underneath the armor, I mean above, on another layer. ;)
You should see it then.
Verehin: Uh. Nice one. His arm seems short though. I think because his lower legs are very long in comparison to the thigs (don't mind it too much though, actually looks a bit creepy and interesting). The way his right (our right) foot is angled is a bit extreme, I think. At least I can't do it.
Oh shit, my pasta is boiling over!!
Ok, back. (And yes, I still had the time to type that...)
So, for the foot, I'd tilt it back towards the other a bit. That should do. :)

Right, I need help here. I've only got myself as a reference model at the moment and while I'm quite tall I'm most definitely girl shaped. I've done my best but any pointers on making him more masculine? I don't want to go too bulky because there's rarely the resources for that in the dessert. There's something girly about his legs... hmmm.
Foofea
October 17th, 2008, 04:04 PM

Lengthened his neck and tried to fix the face. I think I may have messed that up again.
Awesome stuff guys!
Hideyoshi - I'm liking it. Maybe bring his left arm back as it would naturally do while walking? I think if you did something like that it would add a little more depth, the rest of it is coming along nicely. :)
RosmaryDarling - the legs are a little curvy, as someone mentioned. The pose should make for a very nice finish. Watch that hand, it looks like it has six fingers at the moment.
Sforza - I like the feel of your piece. However, I'm having difficulty telling which direction he's facing. The upper body makes it look like he's facing forward to the left. And his legs are either too short on that one side, or are face the complete other direction. Like the colors so far, and the expression.
Verehin - good start! Watch his left leg, it's pointing too far down I believe.
vibhas virwani - the design is looking awesome. The head looks great but there's something that looks off, I'm not really sure what it is. Sorry I can't be of more help.
DigitallyDumbfounded - one has too much and the other too little, definitely do something more inbetween the two.
vineris - maybe bring that right hand forward towards us more.
Hiipi - I'm not sure I like the last one. I love the left to right direction, and it gives the idea of movement. However, he seems to get lost up there in the corner. Is there any way you could expand the canvas a little, or bring him lower and a little further back. Maybe show more of that billowing cape and the end of the hooks?
hungryan- I like it so far. The top of that Worm Caller thing is curving slightly to the left.

My latest wip, lol you can probably see that I don't know anything about Dune. I must pick it up someday. :oneye: Crits are more than welcome.
Sforza: I'd try using different brush for background, because the current one confuses the eye. And the colors look a little bit muddy, probably because of pure black. I like the concept!
Rosemary: Make the calfs more bulky, they look girly atm.
Hideyoshi: Love your work dude, and the last update blew me away:asspat:
28thwing: nice thumbs, the second one is probably my fav.

I think I tend more towards the emptier background. And I expanded the canvas. It was a little to cropped in indeed.

i started late but i love dune too much to miss this opportunity - i don't know if i'll finish him in time but i'll try! any comments?
vineris green is an interesting choice for a world like dune but it's a nice contrast to your red desert! i think his left knee patch is too low.
rosemary very interesting pose! he still is somewhat feminine, perhaps broader shoulders and more chin?
digitallydumbfolded i like your dark vision of him! i prefer the "friendlier" version though - it provedes more contrast to the dark character imho. i like the lonely black clad man in the bright desert.
foofea nice action shot! i don't know if the head's shape is weired or if the cloak obscures it too much? and watch out to make both hook-thingies identical!
hideyoshi wow - that's cool! very futuristic but still dune-like. something about the breastpart of the stillsuit makes me think of boobs - sorry....

verehin cool design - somewhat tribalistic? i don't really get what's going on with his right arm.

desert, battle hardened guy, intense look and maybe a few war scars on the leathery face... leader of men, warrior and father? toy with the turban idea but not enough time i guess (excuses) liking a few entries, looking forward to how he'll be "dressed" :yum:
just a reminder: for those not familiar with dune, the fremen has blue within blue eyes, saturation of the spice in the blood stream does that to your eyes, whether they glow in the dark like in the movies/ tv series or not is entirely up to your interpretation :P
edit: also some entries are looking too "water fat", fremen having only a ration of few drops of water per day would be very lean, muscles difficult to develop into looking rippling big with so few water too...

Just commenting on a bunch of peoples work as I have the time to this time around. I haven't commented on everyone as a lot seem to be still incomplete so I don't want to echo what these people are probably already thinking.
Ashab - Really nice concept work there. I dig the different ranges of ideas which all have great silhouettes.
Edujante - Excellent art! I love the style and the humor is really funny!
Katinki -Nice pose and good proportions! I like the turban.
MJ Alcazar - interesting artwork, did you render this with colouring pencils? I admire your technique. Is there a way to create darking value using your material because the image looks a little in need of darker areas.
Vineris - You've achieved a really nice sense of depth which is the strongest element to your image. The silhouette is maybe too basic where the arms and legs look a bit tubular.
h2rra - I really like this, the colours are great and the coat and necklaces are all very cool! It is a real departure from the original design but I wouldn't call that a bad thing.
Hideyoshi - Not as strong as your other work within these threads which I'm a huge fan of. It looks as if you thought about the design of the suit after you had put down the figure and environment.
Digitallydumbfounded - I think you've nailed a great feeling of tiredness of Stilgar in the way you handled his pose and motion.
Foofea - Great action and good choice of BG! If I was you I'd get a selection and scale down the head.
hippi - I hope you finish yours as it is my fav entry so far. There's a lot of great motion and energy in the image.

Jeremy Hoffman and edujante are just fantastic...each is so different, great colour, humour and presentation...I love seeing some variety in here sometimes.

Marco Mazzoni: It looks really good, the only thing thats really bugging me about it is that fremen didn't use reigns when riding worms. They used hooks. Stilgar himself is rather nice to look at though.
