The weirdest thing... I'm painting along and my computer is going slow, so I restart and go back to my picture. And for some reason even though the layer in painter is set to normal, it works like a gel layer. I can't draw highlights.
Oh well. At least I got most of the color down.

Painter is weird...
Oh and wall of fire, that's incredibly cool.

my idea behind it was that a spell went wrong, but you may interpret it differently.
originally i planned to colour it also, but i got too lazy.feel free to try on it.

the idea looked good in my mind... but I didn't execute it well enough. The head is slightly squashed to the right side. Its a she. but its hard to tell. I should have added some freckles.
gouache, about 2.5 hours sketching and painting over it.

jeano: cool lighting
hito: i kinda like it... and don't think it's that poorly executed. i agree it's hard to tell it's a she, but who cares. it conveys a nice feeling of "ohhh i really shouldn't be doing this, but it's so tempting... so tempting"!

Please people lets just sketch and leave all the argumentative statements out. I think the signature is just a joke. What ever happened to free speech anyways?

Okay, I spent waay longer on this dsg than I should have... practically all of my Saturday (it was a boring day, nothing else to do, really.) It started out as a studious apprentice, but since I had 'certain' trailers on my mind, it morphed into teen Snape. If anybody's read book 5 they'll know what this was inspired by. Mech. pencil, colored pencil and a little pen.

Jeano,
youre right, i dont want to get into a political discussion, im here to do art and thats why having jokes about homosexuals in your signature is a bad idea. You cant have that and expect people to just scroll past and ignore it. Would you scroll by a swastika? It´s the same kind of ignorant shit.
Surely i could wait for the admins and mods to do their work, but im not that kind of a guy.
Peace.

nothin from me today...but i would like to toss my opinion into the whole signature debate. there is no free speech on an international board, and i for one, am really offended by people making, racist and homophobic "jokes". you're more than welcome to hate or make fun of anyone you like, but do it where no one with an education has to be exposed to it...or the devil will eat your brain...i think...i'll have to check on that last part.

I too agree with you, that signature is not right. I think that if there is something that offends someone then it should be addressed properly. That’s what the "Report this post to a moderator" link is for. But on the other hand do you want some one to freak out because you used profanity or just told a joke. I wouldn’t. I think that’s lame. LETS JUST TALK ART is my point. Anyways ill stop posting in regards to this issue because IT’S NOT ABOUT ART.

Hunger Artist's apprentice roxxx my soxxx. The look on her face is just right.
BTW not defending -- nor deriding -- just adding some context: that dude's quote is from the US cartoon 'Family Guy', its notoriously non-politically correct to be sure. I remember watching one episode aghast at what was being said while simultaneously laughing my ass off... I felt so dirty afterwards I took an hour-long shower (no I didn't).

It appears that everyone did scroll by a swastika; several actually. And if one controversial opinion is allowed, so should another be in turn allowed. Otherwise it is censorship, and I think that is something no artist wants. Besides, is just a joke from a TV show. There is a good adage for this situation: "Forget 'em if they can't take a joke."
PS:Phuzion, if using your piece as my example bothers you, let me know and I shall edit my post and remove it.

I really dont think this matter is up for disscussion. Its not a matter of "free speech" of "censorship" because this site is owned by Jason Manley and he will decide in the end what material is allowed and who is banned. Personaly I wouldnt want to offend anyone, but thats just me, being human.
Walloffire-- thats great welcome to the DSG.

You are absolutely right; the final say is Mr. Manley's, since this forum is his private property.
Anyway, on to the DSG submissions!
Bob Loblaw: I like your style a lot, and your characters give off a lot of personality.
vfxart: The enormous stack of books gives the piece great humor, but it might be stronger if we saw the apprentice peeking from behind it in despair. Just a suggestion. That transparent globe effect is really nice though.
danielh68: Awesome texture and color scheme. Good Job.
Indeed, good job everyone. Sorry I didn't have time to comment on everyone's piece, but good work all around.

I knew there were going to be great submissions today. Really diverse concepts without trailing off topic. silent I love the glow effect. I wasn't sure how to do it on mine. bammer deep perspective with a lot of movement. hungerartist Love the style. Reminds me of the groupboard tools.

Woah, silentbrain nice drawing / painting. The look of concentration on the kid's face is convincing!
I'm bummed, I showed my wife my sketch and she asked if it was some old guy and Saddam Hussein! "No its not," I said, "its supposed to be a wizened wizard and his overgrown apprentice..." Ah well, back to the drawing-board.

OK GUYS..... Sorry it took me awhile to get to this. It was reported to me about QSeptember5's signature. I feel that in the interest of the board and its members that racist/derogatory/homophobic/whatever remarks be left out. But one can excersise their voice here. Phuzions painting is an opinion, a voice about a subject, but in no way is he poking fun/singling out a demographic or race or anything(other then monkey boy George DUBYA). If it said something like white power or ni**ers must die or something stupid like that then it would be removed instantly. But with QS5's signature its not really an opinion about a subject, its using homosexuality in a way to poke fun at something. This is a very touchy subject in the land of forums, but in most cases the real world still applies here, and it is not appropriate. All I ask QS5 is that you change your signature. It has offended people here, and thats not allowed. No need to quit or be deleted. Just change the signature.
awalloffire
November 16th, 2003, 03:55 AM
Qs5's signature isn't even a derogatory statement. At worst it suggests that one can, indeed run in a homosexual manner. Shame on all of us for letting something so trite take the fun out of something so great. Very disappointed. On to the next DSG!

Its not a matter of being trite. Individuals had reported the post saying that they were offended by it. If someone takes offense to it, we have to take actions to remedy that situation. Whether you take it in an offensive context or not doesnt matter, someone did.

I had actually given that a fair amount of thought... I have his features and costume worked out in thumbnails, but while I was drawing this I thought it'd be amusing to have a situation where all you see of this character is this pile of books, some scraps of paper, drops of ink, etc... that is his total existence for say his first year or so as an apprentice...
Faxtar, yeah morphine. Sorry, was alluding to yesterday's DSG... I'm waiting for a kidney stone to pass... so kind of out of it.

sorry to bring up the whole controversy again, but i would just like to ammend my earlier post in saying that i am not pro-censorship, but i do feel that if you want to make a comment about racism, homophobia, etc. do it with art and not with a signature that could be misread by others. I'm all for poking fun at one another because i think it can be a good way to make light of our differences, but there are ways to do it that everyone can enjoy and ways that might seriously offend others and it's important to be selective in how we do it, so that we don't turn people away from this forum. I love the Family Guy, South Park, the Simpsons and other similar types of comedy because they poke fun at everyone and leave no one safe...you can't be called prejudice or bigoted if you make fun of everyone. anyway, nice work on this dsg everyone.
