Hey all. It's been a long time since I post any concept work, and so Im making this thread for that reason.

You might be thinking why red Gorilla? Well, my sketchbook is red, and when Im finished with it(which will be by the end of december, i'll be doing 10-20 pages a day), I'll draw a cool gorilla on the last page.

So here's what I've been up to the last week or so. :) Enjoy!

Man, I really have to rescan these cuz they look a lot better in real life. I'll have to tweak certain things.....

What do you guys do to your scans so that they come out looking exactly like the real thing?

lavhoes
November 14th, 2003, 08:35 PM
Usually do the Photo options, and not the Document options, and then tweak it in Photoshop.

Really depends on your scanner, though. I think these scans are fine, especially to house the fucking awesome concepts they contain.

Nucleardan
November 15th, 2003, 12:01 AM
I usually scan it directly into photoshop and hit up the levels option. Just a little thought, and it does depend on your scanner.

Oskar! Yeah, it's all looking good! But yeah, when you scan, deffinately scan in as a color photo, or black and white photo. Post more! C u around duuuuude. ;p

empyrean
November 16th, 2003, 06:45 AM
Yeah definitely hit up the Levels under Image > Adjust > Levels in Photoshop. Slide that middle slider to the right a little to darken up the mids, for example. Just play around to get it where you want on the auto-preview and voila, you're good to go.

Love these concepts, I'm really excited to see where you'll be in 2, 4, 10 years. Keep hammering away.

Hey Ink do you use references when doing the hands?

A

I.was.ink
December 17th, 2003, 07:42 PM
Not really. What I do is look at the way other artists draw hands, and then I compare it to my own hand, and the way it moves and looks.

Then I go at it, and hopefully I draw it correctly.

Thanks again so much everyone. I appreciate your kind words. :)

I need to get the ball rolling on some painting, so I did this study in painter following kincepts tutorial (http://www.conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=13511).

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/sketch/portrait%201.jpg

It's got tons of problems, the colors are off, the proportions are messed up, and it just really doesnt work, but you got to start somewhere right? So this is the first of many studies. I just bought this book called portraits (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/ASIN/071483839X/qid=1071544434/sr=2-1/ref=sr_2_1/103-9712276-5253425) and it has some of the best portraits of people from around the world. I suggest everyone get a copy(only 14 bucks). So with the new book Im going to try and do at least one study a day.

Plus, I gotta spruce up my painting skills to destroy mcm in the Thunderdome! ;)

Crits and comments are very welcome!

Good stuff, ink...I mean davi :p . For torso studies, I recommend Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth. It has quite a large section on it ( along with showing how it connects to the legs, and the major muscles), and I learned a loot more about drawing torsos by just copying down his drawings.

Wow, cool stuff there, I.was.Ink. I especially enjoyed reading your adventures at Art Center and envy you greatly! ^.^ Keep on posting!

Earlier, you were asking for advice on scanning pictures to show more details. Someone once told me to scan my pictures at 600 DPI, and THEN shrink it down to whatever dpi I want (like 72 dpi for web viewing). It's worked for me so far, but I've only tried that since I got my new scanner, so maybe it's just that this scanner is better than my old one ^.^;; I hope this helps.

I'm happy to see the number of characters you're doing out of your head man, they're looking great - keep it up.
One bit of critique though:
Your drawings from life seem to have a spontaneity/confidence that seems a little lost in you imaginative characters. You might want to try to bring them together a little.

Iwasink, havent really said Hola in a looonng time. I remember when you were dead set on getting into art center. I've beenw atching your progress since then, and I just want to let you know its inspiriing to see your excitement about drawing and your overall improvement. Make sure you keep posting regularly like you said, cause its always awesome to see these. I haven't picked up my sketchbook in a long time, but this has made me want to start again. :chug:

How often do you sketch from life? I've never actually tried that cause I just think people would get freaked out. Maybe people are more oblivious who's watching them than I think.

wow you've really improved an amazing amount since whenever it was I first started frequenting this site. Good job! I just hope I'll get there some day too. Keep posting, this stuff is like gold. I love the conceptual stuff, especially all the costume design/ robotic stuff you've been playing with. Your style makes it clearly "read-able", which is something a lot of people struggle with, I think. Environments are cool too, lets see some more of those.

thanks for the kind words and comments fellas. Makes me feel good :)

Here's some figure drawings I did during my second term at Art Center. We studied different techniques from the masters including Tiepolo, Michangelo, Matisse, Egon Schiele(one of my faves), and the list keeps on goin. These drawings were done towards the end of the term when we were looking at Expressionism and Egon Schiele's work. The teacher wanted us to exagerate the figure a lot, and eventhough it was tough at first(cuz im not used to it). I ended up loving it and incorporating it into almost everything I do now. We did do a lot of the classical stuff, but I'll have those tomorrow.
So enough with the talkin, here it is:

(I forgot to mention, that we were only allowed to use line)

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig56.jpg

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig57.jpg

Same thing, just working with the male figure

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig58.jpg

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig59.jpg

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig60.jpg

The thing that made this technique very fun was that the point of the drawing was the experience. We weren't going for likeness or realism, but the emotion and attitude of the pose and the person. Unlike other drawing approaches, each drawing should be a new experience. You shouldnt know what lines you're going to make and what its going to look like until you do it. This made it very liberating and fun. I suggest everyone try it. And if you dont know who Egon Schiele is go find out, cuz he rocks!

One thing Ive been toying with is to group values together. Im usually trying to narrow it down to 3 values. The darkest, the lightest, and an inbetween. I make weird and odd shapes out of what I think these values are, and because I do, I find my drawing to be much more interesting, and when I get it right, it looks more realistic (at least I think it does)
These are drawings I did recently. I tried being more analytical, and painterly. I sorta got the hang of it, but I'll keep practicing.

then i saw he was one of your faves. wicked cool man...you've captured some of his insanely cool line work. i am very impressed. my efforts to do the same were fraught with peril and appeared to be the work of a one eyed infant. i lacked confidence - it looked like timidity, yours are strong and oh so cool.

Mindcandyman:Why dont you try it one day? Will you get to experiment later on, or how do things work at the atelier?

Well fellas, heres another set of fig drawings where we drew on toned paper with ivory white combined with charcoal(I used conte). The purpose of this exercise was to use the tone of the paper as the middle ground so that you only drew the darks and the lights. It was tough at first, but I liked using this method a lot.

First off are the more sketchier and faster poses(5 mins. I think) and for some reason I like these a lot more than my longer poses. I think its because I like the fresh look of the fast ones, but at the same time I like the more precise touch to some of the longer poses. I guess I'll just keep practicing until I find the middle ground.
Anyways, here u go:

http://iwasink.visiblesurface.com/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/fig76.jpg

Mmm...I just recently did some of my first black/white on gray paper drawings. It's really fun. Yours are great! You obviously know the figure and how to render it well...a very solid and confident feel with all of them. I'm really digging it.

Did you use both black and white conte? Or just conte for the black and white charcoal? Either way, very confident work. Bravo!

Refrigirator & Josef: thanks

fukifino: I used black conte and ivory nupastel sticks. I sanded one side of the stick to a long point and used that. But Ive used the white charocal pencils and those work just as well. The trick is to get a smooth and long tip on whatever u use. that way you get a nice line variety.

At the atelier they approach the life drawings in a more drawn out way...which is good but I don't get the quick gestural qualities that you get. I may need to go to some other life drawing sessions to practice this sort of thing.

Thanks for the encouraging words everyone. It means a lot!

I've been really busy with school and different projects that I haven't been able to update this thread. But after the long wait here it is. First Ill post some sketches I did in my sketchbook. In my sketchbook Ive slowly started to think about design and layout of the pages. As of last week or so Ive started to think more about composition of the page and design the page as opposed to just having drawings in it. One fault I know I have is that I tend to stick to my own cruches when I draw. I almost always start out with the face. I was talking to wes9000 once about how he starts his pages and he says he starts out very loose and gestural. So since I ten to tighten up, I'm going to be approaching things that way.

Oh yeah, some of the drawings are done in mechanical pencil, hi-tec-c pens, and a combo of both. I'd like to hear comments and crits. Also things you see I need improvement on. Anyways.....ON WITH THE SHOW!!!:)

dako: For that drawing I drew on grey canson paper with Conte 1710 2B pencils. For the highlights I used ivory nupastel and sanded the tip down to a point. ( a tip for drawing that way is to let your paper be the middle value and dont let any of your darks and lights come to close together, but rather let the color of the paper make that transition for you)

For one of my classes we were drawing facial expressions and dealing with emotion. So we were given a list of emotions and we had to take pics of someone making those expressions. I chose my main man Alec! Whose one of the funniest guys I know.

After drawing him this is what I came up with.
I used woodless pencils and I drew on printer paper. (I especially liked drawing on it because it was suuuuuuuuuuuper smoooth and my pencil glided really well over the paper)

AmadorL> Thx. The class was an oil painting class, so it took me about 12 weeks of classwork and homework to be able to paint that. oils are fun...:)

gabo>thanks for the compliments senor. About the nose thing, yeah I do that as a landmark and for design purposes. Also, I'll draw the underplane of the nose as a little triangle in the beginning stages to help me out (as a landmark) for position and perspective. Oye, las rueditas esas del pulpo se llaman omoplatos? no sabia. Es un estudio que hice del pintor Gustav Klimt, quien ahorita me gusta mucho.

xia> thank you. The lighting was sort of an accident, but it did give it a dramatic look that I like a lot.

heres some quick gestures in my fig drawing class. Im more about designing figures these days, as opposed to copying exactly what's up there. There so many people at my school trying to do that, with formulas and exact analytical theories that all their drawings end up looking the same. So Im trying to be different, along with a couple of friends of mine...Alec and Andrew. Enough chit chat, here you go.

They're either 1, 2, or 5 min gestures.

Holy crap dude you are a machine.

I knew you were hiding the GOODIES!!! Man that SP is really good, you have learned so much from even just your classes.

Yeah making a canvas is fun :). I have never painted a master copy. What does the original look like, is the assignment to copy it exactly as it is or reinvent upon it?

Your gesture drawings are amazing, so much contour and definition. Just beautiful what can I say. :) You have the ability to give emotion with your expressive contours.

Heya I.was.ink - remember me? I have been very busy recently and somehow missed your thread. You have come a looooong way. Your figures are amazing. I like the energetic lines which - at least to me - come out very confident, just as if you always know exactly where to put them without having to erase. Just great. Some of your figure constructions remind me of Egon Schiele - coincidence?

Keep working, Art Center seems to offer you the time of your life!

Thank everyone for stopping by and seeing me grow. Im finally free from the clutches of school for 3 weeks(I just finished my 3rd semester). I have learned so damn much and I cant wait to put it to good use. I have so many great classes next term that I cant wait to dive into. Throught out the term I learned how to paint in acrylics, learned about tons of artists, and Im loving every part of it. For a while in my sketchbook I was having a rough time, and just wanted to stab the hell out of it :nohope:, but I worked through it and found a very good solution to my crappy drawings and frustrations. So I'll start off by showing you guys some sketches, that Im not to happy about(Im actually not going to show a lot more, that I think are just flat out CRAP!) at the time, but they were necessary for me to do in order to find a clearer route.

These are all drawing from my old sketchbook. What Im doing is keeping a sketchbook per term, so that when school is over I can look back and see improvement.

What was happening to me was that my drawings were losing life and structure. So I tried something one of my teachers told us to do in class all the time, and what do you know, it worked out great. He always told us to be fast and loose in the begining(drawing very lightly of course). This gives you a starting point, and since we tend to start off with the details this breaks our nasty habits. So since that day Ive been trying it and it has helped out a ton. I forget sometimes and my drawings will get stiff and boring, so I try to stay away from that at times.
What im working on now is
-exaggeration
-precise lines(Every line and shape has to count for something or else, its just pointless).
-Feeling and emotion behind a drawing
-why? I ask myself that all the time, why does the character look that way, or why am I drawing this. I apply it to all sorts of things really.
-Touch. Touch is something another one of my isntructors referred to. Its as if we can actually feel the person or object we are drawing. Say...
Egon Schiele, he was great at it, cuz all of his drawings were full of life. The linework itself was full of emotion and touch.
-Design. Ive been reading some books on composition and design and now Ive come to realize how super important it is. It comes before anything else in a drawing/painting.
-Anatomy....i get sooo confused at times...:nohope:

anyways, sorry for my ranting...
Ill post paintings, figure drawings, and drawing from my newest sketchbook for this term soon.

cya and thanks for looking:D

Holy Moly I.W.I.! These are greeeat! Dont be hard on yourself, I see no crap here! Your gestural figure studies are awesome because you draw the figure in angles that imply curves rather than fiddling with getting the curves just perfect, it gives them a new intensity that I dont think would be there if you just tried to super-render your figures down to every subtle variation in the form. I enjoy your sketchbook pages too, even though it seems like they are random interactions between your brain and hand, they seem somewhat composed, like you were'nt thinking about them, and thats how your brain and your eyes like to see stuff arranged in the page. I think the subconscious element of the sketchbook is why so many people gravitate towards the daily sketchbook forum...not to see uber-finished, polished stuff, but for some insight into how really great artists think when they aren't thinking about it, if that makes any sense. Anyway, I digress, great stuff and very insughtful!

Dennal Floss:Thx. I want to incorporate a much looser line quality into my drawings, and then combine that with a more academic line and hopefully get the best of both worlds.

Opp...I just finished this assignment for my color theory class and decided to post it.
For the assignment we are supposed to use only two complementary colors plus white to make a painting. So I used painter and went at it and this is what I got (we had to use ref).
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/ct.jpg

this was my pallete:
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/blueorange.jpg

The purpose of this was that in real life there aren't many saturated things in everyday moments. As artists and designers we tend to exaggerate saturation so that our paintings come out looking nicer. By being limited to only 3 colors, you get a less saturated image, but closer to what it might look like in real life.

The hyena is great - why did you choose to do it in Painter instead of traditionally (which would have been my first "natural" attempt)? And did you create the palette first to color pick for your painting?

Thanks for sharing!

Jester:hi, I havent heard from you in a while, and yes you're right I am in my second year of art center.Time goes by really fast. anyways, I chose to do it in painter, cuz I had other assignments to concentrate on so I couldn't really spend the time mixing with real paints, although I think I'll try that later sometime because I know that I'll learn much more from doing it with trad medium. I did create the palette first.

My TD entry. Although Sliverslash challenged me, he didn't sumbit an entry. :[
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/sketch198.jpg

There's a project I'm working on for my intro to illus. class where we had to fill a 30"x40" foamboard with 4"x4" thumbnails of what depression and anxiety mean to us and how we have experienced them. While sketching and looking in the thesaurus for different words relating to depression, I came along the word disorder which reminded me of when I was a little kid the kids would make fun of my big ears and that would make me depressed.

So here are some studies based off pics I took of myself exaggerating proportions and especially the size of the ears.
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/sketch199.jpg

and here's a quick rough I did(gouache) in my sketchbook of what the illustration is going to be like.
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/figure%20drawing/sketch200.jpg
So the kid/person is depressed because of his deformity(or at least that's what I thought I sorta had when I was young) and above him is the idealized/perfect ear.(ironically it's my ear, that I once was made fun of).

A sketch based on this metaphor:That tree of a man, scratching at the roots with his twisted claws. He wants in.

i like your model drawings, but why aren't any of them complete figures?

In your faces i see a lot of disproportional stuff, like ears and jaws to far back, short noses, back of the head missing. Your life drawing are a lot stronger, less errors.

Don't be afraid to do these things, i'm sure you know how ears are places, how jaws line up with mouth etc. So if you watch this every you draw a non ref, non life head you will do this automaticly after a while.

In my rendering class, we're working on a graphite piece. I'll explain what the whole thing is about when I post the finished version, but for now I'll show you guys the wip. (We have to use refs in order to get a photorealistic result)

Ink, when I see your sketches it's very plain and easy to see the planes - when I try drawing people myself, I only see round forms, no planes and have great difficulties to think them "round". I wonder how you do it.

Is that little sketchbook a moleskin? The de-saturated scans look really antique and nice.

In your graphite photorealistic pic - what are the scissors stuck in? Is it a feather?

liam: thanks, rendering scissors is kinda fun. :)

jester:When drawing I try and emphasize the planes so that form reads. What I try to look for is the corners, and I can usually tell when they're there cuz of the light. If the value changes, that means that theres a plane change, and its easier to see wherever there's highlights.
Yup, the sketchbook is moleskine. I love their sketchbooks, especially since you can paint in em, and you dont get bleed through unless you get the paper really wet.
There's a piece of bamboo balancing on the tip of the scissors and a feather on one side.(ill explain the whole thing, when I post the finished version)

hey man, awesome stuff here.
that scissors render turns me on (something about photorealistic graphite renders just gets me going ^-^) and is awesome, what are you using for the background? one of my teachers at uni toldme about 'graphite powder', apparently you can pour it onto the page and then rub it in with your finger, is that what you use?
also how do you get the edges so crisp and clean? (curious as im trying to go for photorealistic feel for some of my life drawings)

the only thing... i demand more creatures ^-^ (jk thats just my creature fanboy talking ^-^)

looking forward to your next update, and really looking forward to the finished render

hopefully meet you in san fran

CArttonfox: You're very close with the graphit powder guess. What I did first was, get my line drawing transferred down onto my board. Then, I covered the whole thing with frisket film and cut out my shapes. Peeled off the bg and then took an Ebony pencil (which is the darkest value you can get in graphite) and growned it down, with a sand paper pad onto my board. Then I took a makeup applicator(little soft round pads) and rubbed my powder into my board. It took me like 2-3 hrs. just to get it right, and its still not perfect, but its as good as its going to get.

Since you've requested some creatures, creatures it shall be. :}

Zebsfree, Bojee, SokThx, I'll be posting the wip later on today.

Ryu I go to Art Center College of Design in Pasadena and I just started my 2nd year there. One of the things that I value the most in my artistic improvemnt was figure drawing. I learned a tone from drawing the figure and I still learn a ton. So if you're not drawing the figure yet, I'd get on that asap. As far as painting goes, I'd start off with oils cuz they're easier and less frustrating that acrylics(they were for me atleast), and it's not that they're easy and you'll be able to get great at in a week or so, but It's all up to mileage. Just work hard and paint/draw from life every single day. Surround yourself with teachers and people that will help you with all these things. Great instructors were, and still are, a key to being your artistic improvement.

jester HI! I dont know the Slaine comics you speak about, but please show me what you're talkin about. The picture doesnt show it cuz it's kinda crappy, but the shirt and pants are flat because I wanted the flat quality of them to contrast with the rendered parts. It was just something I'd think I'd try, and well, it was fun. I'll post better pics and closeups later.

Here's some w.i.p shots.

Started roughing it in with some gouache.
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip.jpg
But when working with gouache, the colors started to get too muted and I couldnt get any saturation out of them...soooo, I switched over to acrylics.

Here's a pic of what the drawing looked like
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip2.jpg

I think I was about 75% done with the ear in this pic
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip3.jpg
I started with the ear first because I wanted to establish a finished section of the painting and base everything else off of it. I was also scared to start on the face...:P

In order to get a clean edge on that border, I used frisket film. So here's a pic of me pulling the stuff off.
There's many brands of the stuff, but for those of you that dont know it, its a transparent low tack paper that you can put over a piece, cut out a shape and remove. I cut it with an exacto knife, using a brand new blade. You have to be careful, cuz you can cut the board, so just cut deep enough to get through the frisket film.(hope that ansers your questions cartoonfox)
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip4.jpg

Here's what it looks like with if completely off, covering the boy, and the border.
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip5.jpg

I painted the black using an airbrush to get a smooth even black surface
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip6.jpg

I then had to cover the whole thing with frisket to cover the black and cut out the border to paint it red. What I should have done first was paint the red border, then put frisket on top and cut the border's shape and paint the black. That way I wouldnt have to recut my shapes. Whoa...that kinda sounds confusing....sorry.:blahblah:
A pic of the finished border
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip7.jpg

I established my darkest darks in the face first.
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip8.jpg

Slapped some basic colors where light hit his face
http://www.visiblesurface.com/iwasink/Art%20Center/earwips/earwip9.jpg

Finished the face

What it looked like before I added the linework to the shirt and pants

pretty cool stuff, ur skills are coming along nicely, i really like the guy with the big ears too, as far as your sketch book though im kinda confused as to what you are going for as most of your stuff is just life drawing, im not sure if you want to be a concept artist but if you do i suggest taking what you have learned and get better at design, as of now you got really strong skills but your design skills are lacking, id practice that more if you want to be a concept artist. I think these whole boards actually really lack that. Keep up the good work.

I.was.ink
October 24th, 2004, 04:46 PM
Thx Gasmask.

You're right about my sketchbook. Lately Ive been busy with illustration assignments that take their sweet time to finish, cuz instructors want to see sketches one week, then value studies, comps, and finished illustration. This makes it a little hard for me to just explore a whole lot in my sketchbook, so I resort to drawing from life. Which isn't a bad thing, but I know I should put more effort in drawing from my head.

As far as design skills, what do you mean exactly? Design referring to the characters? I know that's one area I have to work on.
Page design?
Creatures?
I think I know what you're talking about, but its always good to get a different take based on other peoples pov's.

I do like conecept art a lot, but I think I like illustration a bit more. I like the idea of working on a piece for a certain amount of time to get a nice finished piece in the end. What I love about concept art is that you get to design more imaginative scenes/characters, and that really wouldnt be happening very much with illustration.

Thx for the crit and suggestions. Got any more?

October 24th, 2004, 05:12 PM
yeah man, i think your illustration is comin along nicely, i could totally see you having a gallery some day and i know its hard to explore as much as you would like in school with HW and stuff but yeah if you want to do characters, the life drawing is the best for that, now just take what u know about that and look at lots of outfits from all over the world and get inspired by them to design something cool, like look at different outfits from different time periods, take what you like from them and deisgn a character that way or the animal life drawing is great for creatures, even space ships and such, cause things i nature alreayd have stable design so it can easily apply to say, drawing a creature with 6 legs since you know that already works in nature it will work in design, or silouette shapes like say a beatle, could easily be a siloette shape of say a space ship cause that shape in nature already works, think in 3's cause most things in nature follow that, in terms of say, legs body and head, 3 can also mean, big shapes secondary shapes and minor detail etc. its hard to explain but i hope i made sense lol

Hey!

Nice pen sketches and gestures!

But, notice that style you are working in on those gestures. It seems that a lot of people studying in that part of the country turn out figure drawings that look verrry similar to the next guy's. Keep what works with the approach but, intergrate your own voice into the drawings!
