I'm the project leader of a comic project, Carpe Chaos, that will begin storyboarding and creating comics by the beginning of 2010. My aim is to create a well drawn comic book about alien races (no humans) learning about each other, fighting with each other, allying with each other, and so on. The stories I want to tell revolve around discovery, tolerance, war, and the politics involved when cultures collide.

We need more artists to help us develop concepts for the species, environments, technologies, characters, and everything else in the universe we're developing. We've been working on this project for more than two years now, and while we're an independent project (started with just me and a buddy from college dreaming all of this up), we have acquired a sizable grant to see the project through.

Here is our mission statement:

"To convey the virtues of thought, knowledge, tolerance, planning, diplomacy, determination, and action through quality entertainment; to convey the horrors of violence, rape, war, and genocide, whatever their motivations, through like means; to explore and ultimately expand the generally accepted potential of comics as a medium while maintaining a symbiotic harmony between the writing and visual art; to tell engaging, gripping, captivating, and well-thought-out stories via this medium; to present detailed, exquisite, developed, and consistent visual art; to present well-defined, multidimensional, emotional, developing characters; to almost exclusively use digital means of production; lastly, to build a greater, fully continuous and immersive universe around our stories."

So you can see how we'd need more than just a few people to help us try to pull this off. If you'd like to see some of the work we've done so far, you can visit the project website at www.carpechaos.com and flip through the news posts. If you look back through previous news posts I think you'll get an idea of the type and quality of work we're looking for. If not, click here (http://www.carpechaos.com/gallery2/d/11754-1/PORGFireArms2.jpg) for an example of the quality of work we expect for final concepts.

I'm able to pay $12 per hour (with possible raises depending on the quality, quantity, and efficiency of the work). It's completely digital; our artists upload jpegs to our gallery, post them in our forum, and we give feedback on those pieces so that the artist can go back and revise it as necessary. Some of the design processes go through over a dozen iterations before being finished, which is why I prefer to pay hourly - so the artists are paid for the near-endless tweaks and adjustments we often request for final designs. To give you an idea of the types of changes we request as concepts develop, click here (http://www.carpechaos.com/gallery2/d/11786-1/BlueBeamRainbox.jpg).

Anyway, I'm looking for artists who can commit at least 5 hours per week to the project, though preferably more (20-30 would be ideal). The best candidates are those that can show me examples of past work that demonstrate a good knowledge of general anatomy (since we are designing aliens), and that show off basic technology or spaceship designing ability. Some of the designs get pretty serous because we want to make sure that the they, while science fiction, are as plausible as possible. Any artist with the ability to create professional, production-quality art is especially desirable. If it works out, artists will be given the opportunity to draw comics for the project once we reach the production stage.

If you have any questions about the legitimacy of the project, because you'll be submitting work remotely and I'll be paying after receiving the work, you can ask any of the following people who have at some point or still regularly help us develop concepts, and get paid for it:

Lastly, and I mention this to avoid any misunderstanding at the get-go, I maintain all rights to any works submitted; if you want to keep the creatures you create, this is not the project for you. In many cases, we have the concept in our heads, and we ask the artists to draw them out for us based on a written description. And if it isn't clear, let me say we are looking for 2D artists, not 3D artists. If you're not even remotely interested in drawing comics as a career option, this project probably isn't for you either.

hi. i know that i'm not supposed to reply here in the actual job forums, but i tried to e-mail you a couple of days ago about your project ( which i think is great btw ) and gmail has essentially said that it's not going through. i was a bit confused about your e-mail address and i tried a few different ways of writing it, so perhaps that's the problem. anyway.. i would love the opportunity to submit to your ad, so i can give you my e-mail here kollatt@gmail.com and my home phone in case you are able to contact me this way ( 843 ) 742-7059. if i could make sure the e-mail address was correct that would help me, so any reply would be appreciated. thanks very much. - david hammond
