I'm thinking mainly outside the world of concept and illustration.

This Is Malcolm Liepke. I absolutely fell in love with his work.

Here are a couple links...

OMG!

I had to come back and post. His work is spectacular. Some of the faces remind me of leyendeckers stuff so much.

Did you see the prices he would sell some of those paintings for? Very well deserved though...

Thanks once again JTJ.

Do you have any more?

Nice links, guys. Joshua, that was a great find. I was just flipping through Ryden's book the other day and loved his work. If you pick up a copy of Juxtapoz you will see a host of artists trying to follow (a little too closely) in his footsteps.

You probably all know him, but he's to amazing to not mention.

Shawn Barber.
www.sdbarber.com (http://www.sdbarber.com)
This Guy is a teacher at Ringling School of Art.
Check out the FAQ section on his site, lots of good stuff we all need to hear there.;)
He's an illustrator, but I think the title of "artist" definately applies.

Mike Hussar.
Mike Hussar is another guy. He paints some fantastic pieces. check this out. http://www.laluzdejesus.com/shows/previousshows/2002/hussar.htm
If you live in the Pasadena Area, there is a few pieces of his hanging in a coffee shop off Colorado. The place is called The Equator, it's in the alley where Jake's is.

Great thread! :) I want to say thank you especially to Joshua for posting the links to Malcolm Liepke's works ... I never knew about them until now, and frankly, I've fallen in love with his work too. And Mike Hussar's stuff rock!

Anyways, my top fav contemporary artist has to be Katsuya Terada. The following are some pieces he made for X-Men Unlimited and Hellboy, and some from his various artbooks:

http://www.catsuka.com/interf/insolite/terada/terra_xmen_unlimited.jpg (This one's pretty big.)

Yeah, Skip Liepke is pretty sweet, as well as many of these other people. Here's a few people:

http://www.shannonassociates.com/artists/swearingen/fs/1.jpg
http://www.shannonassociates.com/artists/swearingen/fs/7.jpg
this guy is Greg Swearingen. I am mighty impressed with his work, especially his colors. His originals are every bit as immaculate as his prints, too. Cool stuff. You can find him on shannonassociates.com

This guy's a fine artist named Claudio Bravo:

Paints everything from the life, and it shows! See his work on http://www.puc.cl/faba/ARTE/AUTORES/BravoObrasI.html

everyone needs to at least see these artists:

Morgan Weistling(morganweistling.com): he is above and beyond one of the best fine-art painters on the planet. Hes the youngest person ever to win the prix de west, which hopefully everyone knows about. Regardless of subject matter, hes a genuis.

Daniel F. Gerhartz: Another amazing painter. Study with schmid for a while. Now he can outpaint him any day of the week.

Harley brown:harleysworkshop.com) Hands down the best pastellist in the world.

Richard schmid: He's a phenomenal draftsman, but looking at his stuff gets old quick.

John Asaro: great loose painter, amazing colorist.

There are many more, but these few are really gifted people. Its not concept art, or fantasy or comic stuff. This is just good ol' fashioned fine art at its best.

In all fairness, Liepke and Kobayashi are comtemporaries and shared a studio for many years. Liepke always had a higher profile because of his illustration work, but it's more of a Picasso/Braque type situation than a simple case of imitation.

Norman Rockwell is my homeboy. Where did you see his originals at?

lyon
April 22nd, 2004, 10:41 PM
I think that Coro and I read from the same book.

Awhile back there was a traveling show on Norman Rockwell called "Pictures for the American People." The show came through the Phoenix Art Museum and I went to it a half dozen times. There is a book from the show that has some of the best reproductions of Rockwell I have ever seen. They are done directly from the paintings. Comletely amazing. Most of the time you see Rockwells paintings reproduced, they are taken from printed Saturday Evening Post covers and they are terrible. Seeing the real deal is hard to describe. I also had the good fortune of living by one of the best unknown museums in the country when I was in Utah. The Springville Art Museum. They had 27 Rockwells and 3 Bouguereaus at one point and the museum director let me and 2 others paint from the paintings for a week. It was like revelation from heaven.

Other great contemporary artists:

You all know this one, but I didn't see anyone list him
Phil Hale (http://www.grantbooks.com/phil-hale.html)

There used to be a gallery in Scottsdale, AZ that would carry his nudes, done in egg tempera. Amazing.
Robert McGinnis (http://www.mcginnispaintings.com/contents.html)

I am always in awe/envy of artists who can create a whole world like his and make a living from it.
James Gurney (http://www.dinotopia.com/)

Nothing but Norman Rockwell stuff. I believe it's on land he owned and they also have his preserved studio. Kind of barn-shaped with HUGE South-facing windows. It's kind of overwhelming; many of his paintings were huge.

Oh wow, from a fine-art standpoint, its a short list....

Mian Situ- His large illustrative paintings have to be seen to be believed. This guy is tops in the country, and you'd be hard pressed to prove otherwise.

Morgan Weistling-His subject matter is a little sugary, but this guy is one of the best draughtsmen on the planet.

Schmid- Love/Hate kinda thing, he's just damn good tho.

Harley Brown-Definately the best pastelist around, great colorist too.

Dan Gerhartz-Another AMAZING painter!

I could go on and on... but these are some of the best/favorite artists of mine.

I got into problems thinking of any artist I really like. This wasn't a problem 10 years ago when all I wanted was to paint just like Bisley. It's the "I want to paint just like..." phase everyone goes through I guess.

There's certainly a lot of artists that are good at painting, but referenced realistic paintings with an artsy touch bores the bejesus out of me to be frank. Personally I learned to draw so I could do vengence crazed planet smashing battle droids and girls in huge mechaboots.

Basically the only artists that comes remotely close to my preferences of subject and style are a bunch of obscure japanese artists and... well, myself. Unfortunately I can never appreciate my own art, being my own worst critic and all that.

There's a lot of stuff in this thread I like though.

Oh - I thought this was focusing on specifically living artists. These are a few obscure (semi-obscure) artists from back when that deserve some attention.

P.S. Kroyer - amazing painter who resided in Norway .. You can see how he influenced Nerdrum's "daylight" paintings

Ilya Repin - Probably one the greatest Russian painters ever

Ivan Serov - I think he was a student of Repin's ...looser style...

Corneliu Baba - very hard to find info on. Romanian artist who has a somewhat unbalanced body of work..which probably prevented him from reaching higher levels of noteriety. He did some really excellent paintings worth checking out.

Frederick Lord Leighton - If you like Alma tadema you should like this guy

Maxfield Parrish - I'm surprised no one has mentioned this guy. from those awesome old days of Illustration - unique technique and picture making skills. Check em out

Daniel Merriam - He's actually alive! Odd watercolorist - but his paintings don't look like normal watercolors. Fun, whimsical stuff...he has weakpoints, but I think he is a unique talent

If anyone wants me to scan in images and post them, let me know...I have books on all these guys

patdzon - he was my teacher. i graduated last year. he has amazing drawing skills that were probably beaten into him at the China National Academy of Fine Arts. he does so much life drawing he practically had an open casting call for asian people in seattle to model for him. sometimes he's left without a model and uses himself. i think there's at least a couple of him in each painting. those paintings take a long time. i think he told me it took him almost 10 years to complete the 5 huge paintings in the series. i know he worked on other stuff too, but that's a hell of a long time to invest in a project.
