I've missed a week and my excuse is terrible - playing SWG! :( :p
These walking mines are made to bury themselves then quickly blend in with the terrain. Their surfaces are slightly sticky, when the wind blows sand will coat the tops making them very hard to find.

Well the "mine" turned out looking more like a keg of beer than anything. I guess that isn't necessarily a bad thing for who ever finds it.
MGH and olsen those are awesome. Very cool lighting.

This is the deadly female Bomb-Bug from the Octhusian Jungle. Its method of reproduction is somewhat peculiar. When its egg cavity reaches full capacity its porous carapace is infused by a highly volatile liquid. It then uses its sensitive antennae to detect ground vibrations from footfalls. When its unsupecting victim gets close enough, it'll scurry underfoot and EXPLODE releasing its larvae and killing/maiming its victim. The larvae then feast on the gobbets of flesh left over from the blowed up victim. Yum.
http://www3.telus.net/badddspellah/Stuff/Bomb_Bug.jpg
Plaf, dig the style.
Once again oDD, I am awed. Mood plus.
Ditto for OLSEN.
I'm soaking in your precision sog_1.
MGH nice palette and light values, subtle and effective.
davi, I can just imagine the herky-jerky motion that spindly thing might carry itself on.

Loblaw beat me to the bug punch! I wish I didn't have to run all the way to the library's one scanner... :P Anyway, I liked the idea of something I saw on a show a long time ago about inserting a tiny camera on a mouse and controlling its motion with direct electrical stimulation to the brain. So, used the idea to make a roach mine. Took about an hour and a half, mech. pencil.
Okay, so my image is STILL not working, despite the fact that I found a home for them... augh! So here's the link to the image.

Year: 2084
Design by: National Bionics Institute
Client: Advanced Munitions Department, Ministry of Peace
Product: Covert Tactical Delivery System
Designed to overcome the two major problems of the classic walking mine design, stability on rough terrain and low speed, this artifical organism supports additional walking modes: suspended (top right) and "rolling walk" (bottom right). Rolling walk, allowing speeds up to 50 mph, is intended specifically for surprise attacks over open ground.
Implanted payload: ultralight tactical nuclear charge, 10 ton TNT equivalent.

Man, some really great pieces tonight.
DV8 - Menacing little critters. Like the emission of steam/smoke. Also, I like the tilted composition angle.
Bob Loblaw - Like the scientific approach. Very creative and well thought out.
brianl - Cool style. I hope you submit more using the same technique. It has a fun retro quality to it.

Need sleep...so today's is quick! The two on the left are just walkers, but you can attach a claymore onto it. Maybe it is even re-usable?
The one on the left...er...the topic reminded me of this one computer game...apologies :)
Cool stuff today folks! Digging the combination of unique and funny here at dsg! :D

hi, i just found the DSG today. i did this humble contribution in about an hour or 2 i guess. you guys do some great stuff!
http://www.chimaeradesign.com/~ccoff/walkingmine.jpg
you don't step on this one.. it senses the enemy by sound, vibrations (detected by the tails), and pretty much whatever else you can imagine, i guess. it can walk forward or jet sideways like a crab.

I did a really simply 50s-design mine. I had a test today, so there wasn't time for anything really involved =(
Tomorrow I promise something a lot more involved.

j1wOn - cool, kinda matrixy bug mine
bob- THE bug mine...
oDD - cool concept.
daniel - love the textue! i could use some...
sog - tight!!
olsen - love the green....!
ayato, that creature rocks! so crisp!
brian - sweet style!
wow. amazing stuff today! dsg rocks...
some great ideas here...
here's my story..."there's an old myth about the northern seas...that of the elusive 'walking mines'....the story goes, that ships are set upon by a strange, unnatural mist, and out of the fog, on all sides, materializes a field of old, rusty mines, slowly moving closer..."
so, the mines aren't old and crusty enough, but i may go back to this at some point and add some muck(!)

MGH : cool!
oDD : nice as always
sog_1 : wish i could do nice and clean renderings like that.
brianl : cool stylee.
moops : ohh yeah! spidery goodness, i like it! cool eerie off-world atmosphere as well.

Man, some great stuff by everyone. But Bob Loblaw...!!!! Damn, that is sweet. I want to see those bugs in a game or something! I can just imaging...shortly after the bugs mating season, the area they inhabit is inundated with pregnant, ready to burst bomb bugs. All of them searching for some animal large enough to provide food for their young.
As a human walking through that area, even if you didn't step on one it'd still be creepy, just hearing these faint explosions every once in a while.
Dunno, something about that design just really resonates with me.

Not sure if this will work becuase im still not sure how to put images on this sight properly. Its realy annoying. Ah well if it works heres the story.
This is the AP/AA-75 'Scatter'. Its a multi target mine with capabilities of neutrilizing personel aswel as lightly armoured vehicles such as jeeps or APCs. Its has a radio reciever and heat imagery to detect low emition vehicles aswel as living targets and is even attracted to human targets when radio transmisions are transmitted or recieved. It can be set to deploy on both heat and radio waves or each one seperatly to choose which targets to specialise in. It is particularly deadly and night when patrols come across a 'Scatter' field as any radio transmitions or heat detection will cuase havoc among there ranks as each of the scatter mines burrows out and begins to follow its target relentlesly until neutronium power cell is depleted (typical neutronium/zinc powercells last 500 years.) making this mine a hastle to clear after wars have ended.
