Wish I had started this one earlier - think I may have taken it in an entirely different direction if given some more time.

Coffee break, so here's mine. Not happy with it at all... something I can't get right with his eyes. Ought to use more ref... I tried to present Holmes in a thoughtful pose, as for a formal portrait, but with that intensity his character has.

Down to the last few hours again!

My inspiration came from a painting by Dan Dos Santos. (http://www.dandossantos.com/gallery/illustrations/full_poison_sleep.jpg)

To start, I shot reference and found some on flickr and made a composite reference in PS. Next, I made a drawing on gessoed panel and colored it in PS to experiment. Working from the photo reference and the digital colors I went ahead and painted it up in oils.

Here is my the final, wish I could of spend more time on it, but I'm done with it.
And also the WIP.
Hopefully I'll start earlier next time.

Well, I decided to throw it in here anyway. I did work really hard on it. I just didn't do a very good job with the coloring. I had actually liked the pencil version of it. I see all kinds of things I would have corrected if I had caught them. But, it was a learning experience, and I'll just be sure to do better next time!

GENERAL NOTES:
Some good entries this round!

Onionface’s piece was almost cut, until I remembered that Holmes, among other things, was a master at disguise. So his went to poll.

Darlene Next time we need ¾’s of a character (at least to his knees) and works in progress. Technically, you would have been cut on those counts. If you have wips, please add them to your post.

Yes, edujante's was great!

Edit: Voted for:

Blaise: Great image! An intense and energetic Holmes. And without the usual accessories of the man.

Hideyoshi – Really like the image. As I said before, not really Victorian/Edwardian London, but that’s of little consequence. You’ve reinvented Holmes’s appearance which is what this is about!

Sforza – Smashing! Love the style and the exaggeration, and has a genuine Holmesian feel!

VampireHungerStrike – Love Holmes, but confess I’m not so keen on the girl. You get loads of expression from Holmes even with the top down view, and there’s sensitivity in the way you’ve handled the features. Really nice work.

J.Shamburger – He’s great! A cynical and bright expression, and you’ve got all of Holme’s world in the background. ;)

I see Holmes as an intense and haunted man, much more as Jeremy Brett portrayed him. Wish I could have spent more time on the image, but as usual it was against me! Must sort out those eyes though!

Really nice round and kudos to Mr Madhatter for his reference.

Voted for Poshspice for a beautifully rendered (as usual) Holmes with a face full of personality and elegenace, and for adri n for of a slightly different take on the detective, more brooding and less prim'n'proper, and for the great lines.

Also loved VampireHungerStrike's piece - beautiful colors, interesting composition, and I love what you did with those twisted cobbles.

Votes for
Blaise - theres a sinnister edge to Holmes here and I like it.
Hideyoshi - Very crisp and beautifully drawn and completed
VampireHungerStrike- Captures the mystery of the character and the curiosity of his nature, beautifully finished
PoshSpice - I have envy :p I see what you mean about the eyes - thei right eye seems flatter the bit closer to the nose seems raised but again its stunning and I'm jealous

Hideyoshi: You have my vote. I love your Holmes, especially his face - it's distinctly different from the way he's usually portrayed, but still very much Sherlock Holmes.

Blaise: The vibe I'm getting from your character is more Sam Spade than Sherlock, but I I like the Victorian-Noir style a lot, and as a reimaginging in that context, it works well.

Poshspice: Very classic Holmes, and you certainly captured the intensity you were aiming for.

dirkvandulmen: Yours made me giggle (and wonder what's the story behind Holmes examining fireflies ;)), though I think his face lost some impact from the first sketch to the finished piece.

Looking forward to all the Watsons in the next round!

I voted :
Blaise : Love the angle shot and the light in it.
Hideyoshi : I already said I like yours. Great texture and design.
Poshpiece : As usual... Super great!
J Shamburger : Very funny and excellent character design, the pose is so good, and I like this old school style of illustration.

Vampire hunger strike: Love the pose and the character´s acting.
Shamburger: Love your final...

Voted for VampireHungerStrike, Clochette and Poshspice. None of the others really seemed like Holmes to me.

I think I will be doing my characters only in portrait from now on as I think a lot of the impact is lost with the size reduction to make it fit the voting thumbnails!
I would suggest the same for Clochette!

My votes went to:

Blaise - A nice painting with a dangerous edge. Although there is nothing to specifically tell me it's Holmes he looks exactly right for that setting. Good job.
Sforza - I like him a lot, tall, athletic, pipe... a good Holmes.
Vampire HS - Excellent illustration, tells a story and I love your colour choice.
Jshamburger - The most recognisable Holmes of all. Light humour, well drawn and coloured.

Sorry about my lack of following guidelines. I should have paid more attention to the rules. :) Should I be entering in the future I will be much more thorough. As in, following directions and execution. I'm so embarrassed. :)

I loved Onionface's unique take on Sherlock! Though it's not quite English, it's still really enigmatic.

I also like the one with Sherlock bein' all scruffy and walkin' down the street. And he has a round face in it, but he still looks sharp.

Here's the sketch I used for Sherlock.. I unfortunately don't have anything in between, my apologies. :( *blush*

votes for:

Blaise: super moody, nicely painted! Great take!
Posh: Aly, you constantly deliver, how do you do it?! Very captivating expression on him!
Vampire: great scene, well painted and I have respect for tackling such a forced perspective! The color shift also adds nicely!

Thanks a lot for votes and nods so far! :)

My vote went out to Hideyoshi it was a hard choice there were a few fighting for it. I love your texture, depth, composition, and emotion. You certainly portrayed the grittiness of the time. I love the small details too!

Blaise you were my runner-up. I love the style/rendering, but it read more "gangsta" than Holmes to me.

Good job all around!
