.

[ Pretty open-ended in terms of the look of the creatures, here... ]

[ Niche-equivalent would be the mountain lion... ]

[ Something along those lines, functionally... ]

[ But, something very different (and alien) in terms of form. ]

Didnt really get a chance to finish... i was spending too much time on it for it to be just a sketch. One of these days im gonna really put a lot of time in to ONE piece and see what i can muster up. Its hard to get ample free time. Plus, i want to push myself to work faster.

If I had one regret about this one... its that I didnt use a background :[

Live and learn.

Wow Nightblue, it matches the title exactly! I love :) Especially since it's so easy to cheer for the alien ^^

I made two.. After the first one I decided he needed a mother, in profile. I wish they looked more.. well, like aliens :S

It looks quite big though, from that angle and without anything in the picture for size comparison.

I noticed when I put it away that it looked a bit too much like smellybug's creature (http://www.massiveblack.com/stabby/stabby.jpg), sorry about that. :(

Anyway, around 2 hrs.

Nightbleu: great perspective and bright colors.
Izu: I love the alien.
Ikjhgfdsa: nice one, maybe to photorealistic guy but good aliendesign. Somehow I see a big shiny sting hanging underneath the alien.

For this DSG I made my image a bit more abstract. I like to draw that way sometimes, not really thinking about what I draw (though this time I had to think :) ) and using very clear lines. Not sure how well this one works, I hope iīm not breaking the guidelines by doing it like this.

fughi from yuggoth: Nice, I especially like the prey. Maybe some more difference in value would help.
Hamsta: I think your image is a bit too rough but I like the coloring!
Nightblue: Poor guy :)

goran: Man, you kick ass! Great image!
I did this DSG in the way you asked for :)

NothingReallyExists: Yeah, I agree about the background. I like that sad smiley.
Wykin: Funny! Kind of hard to see though, a bit too bright.
lkjhgfdsa: Very cool creature, I agree on the comment about the guy.
hillergren: I like the angle, especially the "head".
Izu: Awesome!
Tommoy: Very cool creature, the lightning is great.
SaintFuse: Cool, maybe some cast shadows from the creature on the prey could make the scene more dramatic.
brewin: Nice idea. I think you have to give it more depth.

Thanks Mumph, I suppose, now that you've mentioned it, that the empty white background is kind of harsh on the eyes :S I probably won't get in the habit of colouring anything for DSG (beginner therefore very slow... heh), perhaps I should dull the paper somehow...

again, good entries so far.
sorry i cant crit all...

fughi - quite charming i must say, i agree about trying to play with contrast, also try some diffrent textures on the various elements..

nightblue - perfect for a sketch, good desing, good rendering, good story. i love it.

goran - great background, but the alien prespective is off and he doesnt look like jumping on the man.. you lost the dynamic horizental line which gave sense of movement to the picture in the second vers, making him look all still and glued to the image. try reducing the alien cotrast and saturation to convey distance.

nothing - very cute pray, try establishing a lighting source and paint shades from there.. try plaing with contrasts to hint distances.. i hope you dont mind i made a little paintover..
http://i113.photobucket.com/albums/n229/benkashmir/dsg1414predaciousambushbz51.jpg

lkjhgfdsa - very good rendering, not too fond of the alien face, but all his other elements are good.

hillergren - so far thats the design i like most.

izu - a very good alien design and colors.

tommoy - good lighting, great alien.

saintfuse - i very much like it. wish for colors offcourse, the drawing demands it! :)

peg - thats just great. cant find anything to crit except maybe decontrast far edges..

brewin - did a paintover, i took the light source you chose (by the worm shadow) and shaded the worm according to it, also put emphasis on contrast diffrences..

Don't know if it really counts as a sketch after several hours, but hey, what else to do with a Saturday morning?

MikeOB - Before I read your post, looking at your drawing the first thing that came to mind was "Nidoran! :D" lol.. Sorry, looks nothing like it, but for some strange reason there is something "pokemon" about it :S He's cute though :)

Edit: Actually, now that I think of it, so does mine! It has a jolteon butt/body :S *sigh*

Say hi to the jet-propelled squid thing.

Trying to get my head around painter, and not doing a terrific job. Got fed up and switched back to Photoshop. Suggestions, anyone?

Mumph An interesting approach, makes me think of graffiti.
I'm digging the details like the uniform on the alien, the arrows, and how there's all sorts of detail where ever the eye goes.

I think it might be better on a toned background, not such a glaring white.
