View Full Version : Robot - now with finished video!
The Dark Power

So here's a current project that I'm working on. It's a robot for use as a stop motion animation puppet in a music video I'm making for my brothers band.
It's scratch built out of various bits of junk (the body's a tea strainer, the legs are wood, there's bits of broken cameras in there, old computer parts, action figures etc etc).
I may change the head, not sure about that yet. The other arm will be a giant gun (what else?!)

The articulation all works so the pistons will all move once the thing's animated.

I'm particularly pleased with the hand, which was a little fiddly.

Here's a (very) rough edit of the vid if you wanna see how the robot will fit in (sorry, the aspect ratio's stretched).

Wow! I actually really love that music. Interesting juxtaposition of acoustic folk music with an industrial technological theme.
Your robot is cool. But also cute. Which may not be what you're going for.

Cheers, yeah my brothers band are the worlds only 'post-apocalyptic, quasi-acoustic indie-folk duo', apparently, so the music's quite tongue in cheek.
Their site's here if anyone's interested http://www.wellwrite.co.uk/
Was going for a retro kind of look, so cute is cool.
Cheers!

Cool design... kind of looks like the robot from Saturn 3 mated with Wall-E. In any event, a really impressive piece of work. Can't wait to see the final video.

as i didn't say but i do know: you are killer
i really love it
even more in a clip
excellent
i am not sure but the head is a bit white and this is the only part which has this white maybe you could imagine white knees or feet, i don't know. not sure. during the movieclip our look would not be only on this white head but will have an other white reference . (not sure to be clear)
anyway
good work

Nice work indeed - I love you threads. Thanks for the mold-ones in your last thread, btw.
The only thing that didn't look 100% to me with this robot was its feet, nothing wrong with them but they look a bit to flat. But only a little. ;)
Edit: After wathing the rough vid I have to say you should consider keeping the MS-paint robots, they made me laugh out loud. Kickass! :)

Hey buddy,
Wow, once again you have blown me away. You built that dude from scrap? Now that's inspiring. I am now looking at my old computer and thinking of grabbing that mallet. Heh. And I especially love the hands.. how the hell did you stick it altogether?

Hello mate nice to hear from you again! Thanks, yeah I was trying to find old VCRs to dismantle actually. It's all held together with superglue pretty much!

Here's abit of an update on the robot. I've now attached the head and right arm.

The arm’s a large gatling gun. I’m painting it military looking green to suggest it’s a new addition - the idea is that the robot was originally some kind of industrial piece of machinery which has become self aware (that always happens with robots) and nicked a gun from some military robot.

Need to add details to the neck which is looking kinda bare still.

Cheers dude, added to the feet which contain fuel tanks and a fenced off power generator. I figured if you had a piece of machinery like that you'd want key sections near the floor so you can easily service and refuel it.

The left leg has ladders and platforms so the former pilots could easily get up to wherever the cockpit is.

Woaaaaah.... absolutely love the detailing and the scale.. and the teeny tiny details like the platforms and ladders, fantastic! It also looks naturally worn, like rusted and dirty. And you used super glue? Did you go to poundland to buy a box of it? (Joke) I'm terrible with superglue. Always manage to glue my fingers together or to the thng I'm trying to glue it to. Excellent brother, thanks for sharing!

Cheers Kenny, you're very kind. Yeah it's mostly super glue with a bit of hot glue gun thrown in for good measure! I managed to knock it off the table and smash it into bits whilst filming it the other day, but thank god it was easy enough to glue back together!
Sorry it's taken me so long to get back to replying to all this, I have been working on it though so the time's not wasted!
Thanks for everyone's comments and happy to say the robot is now (more or less) finished!
Here's a short trailer incorporating some of the shots I've finished so far and some pics. There's more info on my website and blog if anyone's interested http://www.thedarkpower.com/blog/?cat=14 http://www.thedarkpower.com/robot2.htm

Anyway, here's some vid of the stop motion shots involving the robot and another showing the model itself.

Finally got round to finishing off the video for this. Sorry if this is the wrong spot for this post mods as I realise it's mostly an animation project at this point, but here goes.......
Bit rough around the edges in places, but I'm mostly happy with it.
