View Full Version : SUPER Stylised Challenge - October 2008 - Scarecrow

miss.lynette
October 1st, 2008, 11:40 AM
Welcome to the SUPER Stylised Monthly Challenge – Sponsored by 3DTotal.com and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com). Please post all images & questions in this thread.

So what is this challenge all about?
Each month we will select a title for the Super Stylised Challenge, and we'll post some images for you to use as reference. The title is there to be interpreted as and how you wish. All you have to do then is to think up your concept, paint it, and create a final 2D image of this in your own way!

This regular monthly challenge is designed to bring in some great content for 2DArtist Magazine – in the form of final images from the Top Ten and Making Ofs from the top 3 winners – as well as some great prizes and exposure just for you!

What are we looking for?
Funny and humorous entries which interpret the title of the Super Stylised Challenge however you see fit. We’re pretty much leaving everything open for your interpretation and stylisation!! All we ask is that the title of the Super Stylised Challange is instantly recognisable in your final image! All you have to do then is to render your stylised/abstract/cartoon masterpiece and you’re away!

What are the timeframes and requirements?
The rules are pretty laid back: please submit 1 x 2D Final Image. If you want to have a background or include some graphical elements or text on your image, it's entirely up to you. Image posts should be around 800 pixels across, but please work at a much higher res as the top 10 will be featured in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and we'd like the winner's image to be used as the article cover!

There will be 1 challenge per month, with the deadline being the end of the month GMT. A 'VOTING' thread will be created at the end of the month.

For a valid entry, you must make sure your final image is posted in both the WIP thread before the end of the month - 31st October 11:59PM GMT - and then in the 'VOTING' thread before the 8th November 2008. Voting will take place from the 8th November to the 15th November 2008, when the winners will be announced!

We require the top 3 winners to submit 'Making Of' overview articles that will be shown on either 3DTotal or in 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com); these need to show the stages of your creation, different elements and some brief explanation text of why, and how, you did what you did. We will format this into some nice-looking pages to give you some great exposure, and us some quality content. This will serve as some great exposure for you which, along with your prizes, is a pretty cool incentive to get involved!

Everyone has to post their FINAL image in the WIP thread before the end of the month deadline (31st October 11:59PM GMT), as well as their WIPs during the month. You then have to post it (exactly the same final image) again in the VOTING thread. This means there is a very clear deadline: no-one can work after the end of the month and the VOTING thread still exists as before, as this is a nice clean thread with final images only which is used for the judging!

Posting Works in Progress
Each challenge will have one thread that starts with this info and the brief at the top. This is where all entrants post all WIPs, give feedback, and generally laugh at the crazy ideas that are emerging each month!

Please don't start any new threads – just reply to this one already set up!

Prizes!!
1st Place Any 3 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com). We sell lots of items these days, such as our book (http://www.3DTotal.com/book/), Design Studio Press books (http://www.3DTotal.com/design%5Fstudio%5Fpress/), textureCDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/textures/), Shorts DVDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/shorts/), lots of training DVDs (http://www.3DTotal.com/training/), and 12 month subscriptions to 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2DArtistmag.com) and 2DArtist Magazine (http://www.2dartistmag.com).

2nd Place
Any 2 items from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com).

3rd Place
Any 1 item from the 3DTotal Shop (http://shop.3DTotal.com).

We do unfortunately have to limit prizes to 1 book per winner per challenge, due to high postage costs for heavier items. Please note that we cannot offer the 3D Printed models as prizes!

Judging
Everyone who took part can cast a vote of their top 3 in order, and the 3DTotal/2DArtist team will also cast their votes. We will award 3pts for a 1st place vote, 2 for 2nd and 1 for 3rd. Then we will add them up and ship out your prizes!

*This month we have chosen Scarecrow!

Thought I'd get started a bit earlier this time. Trying to go for a kind of baby scarecrow looking around the farm. Still trying to come up with how I want the background to fit in. Maybe some corn or other plants. Kind of thinking about extending the top up a bit to use kind of a fisheye lens to show the farm and sky in there as well. Any crits welcome.

ah, I really liked the idea of a scarecrow and a snowman sharing a scarf... but then when i tackled it, it ended up looking like a christmas card... so i decided to go a completely different style and chuck him on a rollerskate :)

Thanks to rosatron, my lovely coworker for encouraging me to do some challenge stuff. Maybe soon the whole office does one.

Here's the pumpkin head. I might do another version that's darker like how I first thought of at work from the other thumbnails.

Edit: Anyways the final is the one not marked wip and has books in the corner. Not much spare time to do a dark version.

Here's my Initial Ideas. I'm most attracted to the top right thumbnail.

Step 1: I wanted to take a stab at this challenge. I wanted to go on the theme of silly and cute :)

Step 2: I am working more with the character design of the scarecrow. I may make some more changes yet. I am working in greyscale first then moving to colour.

Step 3: Going through and adding more and more details, upping the contrast and making the light source more visible. Also adding more to the little mischievous girl :)

Step 4: Adding more details to the scarecrow, making the arms more straw-like and adding small touches to the face, arms and legs.

Step 5: More, more, more! Background introduced. Experimented with the shadows on the ground.

Step 6: I did a lot between this and my last step. I finished the background and got a suggestion that the little girl was too stiff and straight, so I made her look more like she was running up to the scarecrow and tugging on his shirt.

Step 7: A big change in the expressions, the eyes of the little girl and scarecrow got reworked. I wanted the scarecrow to look more surprised at getting caught moving around :) As a small touch, I also decided to add some rim lighting to the characters.

Edit 8: Added my first touch of colour. I just wanted to lay it down and experiment. I referenced many many pictures to get the right feel for the piece. DeviantArt os a great place to get good reference!

Edit 9: I get the background the way I want it now. I play around with the colour of the girl's dress. I'm having a lot of trouble trying to get a proper design and hue to match the rest of the piece.

Edit 10: Success! I go back to the original purple for the dress, but add some yellow for contrast. I like that now. I pruned the scarecrow's messy straw arms, adjusted the shadows and added a stem to the foreground pumpkin.

All done! This final version I had adjusted the flower on the girl's shirt and the lighting on the dress.

I hope you like!

does the piece have to be funny or humorous in some way? I was thinking about something more on the dark side. also I wanted to know if it was ok to show something more on the graphic side (blood?)

I'll get some sketches and WIPs up as soon as I get them in order.

It's my first time entering into this competition. This is my current WIP.

23/10/08 added final picture. It's called "Freedom?"

Just a note, I'm on holidays for the next week so my final picture will be uploaded by someone else for me - obviously you'll be able to tell that it's mine. I hope that's okay - it's just that I'd miss the deadline otherwise.

Hi Max! We do say that it should be funny/humorous, but I'm happy for you to create something a little more on the dark side - it is nearly Halloween after all ;) Go for it! Looking forward to seeing your WIPs.

Great work everyone! Half the month is over now, so looking forward to seeing the finals appearing in this thread now before the end of the month deadline. Keep up the great work! :)

Here's my initial sketch. I may change it. A bit dark, a bit bloody. I hope I can finish it how I would like.

I'm thinking that I'll imply that it was the scarecrow that did the deed.

Others are looking good.

I'll see if I can get some crits in this weekend.

Here's my work in progress, and a final version. For this, I sketched the work in, colorized in illustrator, and provided various effects in Photoshop.

The story: In the corn fields of Missouri, the crows are transformed under the light of a full moon into fearsome-winged monstrosities. No longer bound by the fear of the scare-crow, they wage war upon their enemy with terrible fury!

I was very tempted to go the lean and trim Scarecrow route, but then I thought, "what if my scarecrow doesn't wanna be all skinny and lanky? What if he packs on the pounds and goes from Ichabod Crane to Brom Bones?" Being ectomorphic myself, I figured my scarecrow would want to be in good shape...so here he is, gracing the (soon to be) cover of Scarecrow Muscle magazine (the October issue, of course).

I haven't added the text yet, but I expect the cover articles to include "12 Easy Steps to Gourd-Iron Abs" and "How to Snag That Sexy Witch Down the Lane."

Research and WIPs attached...still working and messing around with values and textures and whatnot...

Edit - text blocks have been revised and tweaked - levels played with a bit, highlights pushed and pulled. Can't look at it anymore. ;) The final is the last image, past the research. I had fun with this one, looking forward to the final thread entries! :)

Here it is in its entirety and a possible crop idea.

This picture illustrates a woman taking a scarecrow home with the intention of having sex.
I have simplified the background detail in order to make her shadow in tune, and to make the eye of the viewer focus on the scarecrow and the shadow of the woman.
I chose intentionally not to make holes in the cloth of the scarecrow for two reasons. First of all to make him more human and fashion aware, so that he would seem more attractive to a woman. Secondly to draw the scarecrow in a less traditional way.
