well my creature is called a slight walker. it is enourmous in size compared to the largest of animals and is a combination of an elk and a buffalo. the name of the creature comes into play because the creature doesn't make any sound when it walks. instead the creature is able to replicate any sound it hears via the sound scrapers on its head, and projects them through its speaker(horn) on the side of its head.

Concept: Megalith

Alot is still unknown about the Megaliths, but the facts we do know that they're the uncle traveling matt's of the animal kingdom, with no real set migration paths, these creatures tour the continents out of more curiosity, never happy to stay in one place for to long. Takes a great effort to keep these guys out from major populated cities, and steps are still being taken to decease small town and village "accidental destruction"

The good news is that early warning detection and the fact that it is pretty hard for these guys to sneak up on you by their cries that you can hear for miles and the general earth shaking as they pass on by lets everyone have plenty of time prepare for the encounter

Concept: The Mountain Back

Description: The Mountain Back are a species of gentle creature. Lived on the mountain valley, the creature feed on vegetation, (Its herbivore). They have a pattern coated skin on the back which gives them a camouflage advantages even if they are big and often trees only covered the lower half of their body. They are enormous creature that grew a crystal like bones on their fort head, used only in the matting season, the "crystal" glows in to a fabulous display of light show.

note: the idea is very "to the sound" i guess, the file I heard is kindda like a long humming whale kindda sound. so i guess the creature could use a long neck, and there seems to be some bird twitching at the end of the playback, so I think some jungle or in-land creature would suite the criteria :P.

Concept: Sand Screamer

The distinctive sound it makes is due to the chambers within its body that filter out food and impurities and blows out any waste.

Concept: Basswalker
Well I got the name from the bass sound it emitted, so anyway the 2 ear-like part are the bass-emitter, while the tentacles with receptors and small holes are the resonance receivers. There's another 2 different, black tentacles (actually 4, 2 others are on the other side) are the vibrating tentacles that helps to make the low, squirming sound. Apparently when all the tentacles are moving, it'll make another sluggish-like sound too.

This ponderous creature lives on the humid planet Grancanalus located on the outer rim where if there's a place far from the center of the Galaxy, that's the place. This cute little creature is 2 meters and a half tall and feed itself of all the rotten food he can find in all the great quantity of garbage produced and left all around by the few underdeveloped human residents of the planet or by the even more underdeveloped tourists that go there in great number because they find very amusing all of that.

The Giant Stompala lives in the high mountains. Increasing pressures on their environment from human development have caused their range and hunting grounds to drastically shrink. Artist: hillergren

Concept: Coscinotherium
Coscinotherium (“sieve-beast”) are huge creatures, adult specimens reaching a shoulder height of about 8 to 10 meters.

Like some whales on Earth, Coscinotherium feed by filtering plankton from the water using their baleen (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baleen). Coscinotherium, unlike the whales, are terrestrial creatures and instead of finding their food in the sea Coscinotherium filters the waters of rivers, brooks and other bodies of streaming water. They prefer to feed in somewhat rapid parts of rivers and use their powerful limbs to secure themselves to the bottom while standing in the water, facing the current. The short, muscular tail and the support leg, connected to the heels of the hind legs, have evolved for the purpose of keeping the animal steady and secure against the forces of the flowing water.

During feeding, the water passes through the baleen and exit through a number of slits on the sides of the neck. Two tentacles located on the lower jaw are used to guide the flow into the mouth as well as keeping floating debris from damaging the delicate baleen.

The tusks and plates on the back are mostly for sexual display. These huge animals have few natural enemies.

On a joint of their bodies, they're a tough muscles and it's hard to cut into it,of course, this is not their weak points.Sometimes amber can be found on their skulls, this amber will grow along their life years.

The Ancient Aboriginis hunted them for their skull, Which used as a horn (The young tiny skulls) in a religional ceremony and use as a thorne of the king of tribe (The old big skulls) Because the believed that this is a symbol of the brave... this is a symbol of the conquerer ... this is symbol of " THE KING"..

Concept: The Womp

The Womp is a slow moving docile herbivore usually found in packs of 15 to 20 animals. The Womp has some unknown physical property which
greatly lowers the effect of gravity on itself causing it to float much like a slightly weighted helium baloon. It's long front legs are used to
keep it aloft and can be extended or contracted to change it's altitude.

In addition to floating, one of the Womp's defining features is it's subsonic blast emitted from the multiple powerful diaphragms located on the sides and belly
of it's body. Among other uses, the shockwave from this sound is the Womp's main defense against predators. At close range the blast can render most medium size creatures
unconcious. In a pack the combined effects make the Womps almost impervious to attack.

Concept: Bullistics Frog

Description:The Bullistics Frog is a large creature living in swamplands where the dangers are many. They have built up natural offensive/defensive weapons against both attacks from the ground and air, and are captured and/or raised in the captivity by sentient species to use as weapons of war. The large airsack on their throat can hold air at high pressure which is realeased through the vents on their back. The frog, or it's handler can place items in the opening on the front of these vents which then get released at the speed of a cannonball. Each vent has independant muscle structure to allow for controlled pressure release. The Bullistics Frog has large back claws and strong rear legs to avoid being pushed back upon pressure release and to use as defensive weapons when pressure loading is too slow due to immediate danger. They also use the airsac to float rather than having to swim to stay aloft and like to spend their time at rest floating around the deep swamps.

Concept: The Bassoon Beast of Greater Avynthar

The Bassoon Beast is so named for the valves along its neck, which expand and contract in order for the creature to modulate its bellowing. Tubercles on the auditory canal allow the animal to gauge tones keenly. With these modulations, the Bassoon Beast can find mates, warn off rivals, and stake out its feeding grounds. The Bassoon Beast makes its habitat at the edges of jungles, and grazes along the lower canopy. They are very intelligent and it is thought by some xenobiologists that the Bassoon Beast may compose songs, similar to those of whales.

Initially dubbed the Forest Demon by the settlers that first discovered it, thanks to it's extraordinary mating behaviour. The females announce their coming into heat by beating their enormous slab like tails against the ground, to which the males respond with a haunting cry, edged with the rustle of the dead fibrous growths that form their camouflage, and then slowly move across the forest, following the echoes.

I voted for Electric Goat's quirky four-eyed beast. I like the painting style and the concept.

Longshao would have been my second choice. I find the anatomy a little tricky to follow with my eye, but it makes sense, and I also think the choice of environment rounded out the sounds for me.

Jakka has a very solid piece as usual. I dug it a lot but it didn't have that ponderous slow weighted feeling I was getting from the sound. (The sound was mellower than a battle scene seemed to imply.) Jakka's beast is great, but feels too aggro for the sound. (Solid technique, neat design.)

Ahchu and Verehin were good at providing a sense of scale that really felt like these beasts were dwarfing everything in sight.

Kinonato: I liked a lot of the details you put into yours, but the top down view made it seem more like a regular lizard.

Monsi: Great concept, although the tenuous legs and floating body didn't seem like they could make the heavy stepping sounds I interpretted. Daring use of colour too. :)

Freha: I liked your creature, but worried about its longish throat sac getting caught. I particularly liked the body colouring.

NMEZero: You've got an amusing and original concept there. Props. :)

PixelFish: I know this is your first time entering, but I think a more dynamic pose might be helpful. And a stronger light source might illuminate the muscle masses better. ;)

SirJohanna: Nicely polished piece with wonderful colours. My only quibble is that the beak and the teeth seem slightly at odds with each other in terms of design. Particularly since the environment we see is a grassy plain. Excellent work though.

edujante: You already know I dig your style. I find it more illustrative than conceptual, as I would be at a loss as how to turn this into a 3D model, but your sense of humor and style are quite winning.

Sturnus and Mr. Wittman: I think your pieces show technical skills, but like my own beast, we could probably find slightly more dynamic poses that would show off the masses better. Still, if one were illustrating for a field guide, these are perfectly respectable illustrations of exotic creatures.

Nirufadat: Your sea creature has a lot of potential. I'm not sure the tusky thing works as a tusk however. I kept seeing it more like the dragging whiskers of a giant catfish. More polish and looking at references of turtles and reptiles will help you in terms of texture.

Jur: Nice mashup. I did feel a little confused reading your description of how the animal uses its sail to attract females, as it didn't look retractable to me, but rather attached along the spine. Does the sail have functionality and states of Attract - Don't Attract? Do females not have sails? (Digression: I think I'm going to go suggest a Sexual Dimorphism round for Cow, where we have to illustrate a species which has a marked degree of sexual dimorphism. If it hasn't been done already.) Anyway, I like your creativity and use of colour.

Relic: Another creature I'm worried about. Partly I wonder how the heavy weighted bit of his body doesn't tear off on things, get caught or tangled or become a liability in battle. Evolutionarily speaking, one wonders if this is trait that will breed itself out in a thousand years or so. He's definitely unique though.

Lexa: You've got some interesting body masses here and the general shape of your creature intrigues me. I do feel that the green armoured bits feel more along the lines of hoods and manufactured armor, rather than natural plating. Hints of texture would help ease this impression.

Hillergren: The baleen-like structure on your creature is very nice. I like your rendering for the most part, although I'd think some sharper edges might help give it a weighty feel to the masses, and bring out some of the details.

Jhagen: I'm curious as to the colouring choice for the horns. I think some refining of the textures would also be good. Good effort though.

Lakai: Cute! (For a certain value of cute, which I happen to find cute. I digs me eyeball creatures and bulbuous legs.)

Tommoy: Good job developing the promise behind your sketch. I liked it in the initial rounds because it seemed so different than what a lot of us were developing. I'd say tighten up the detail and colouring on the shell to give it the same sharpness the body has.

RealityChek: I actually think I liked the sketch better, because I could see the body masses. (And where you left off sketching, it had this nice illustrative quality to it.) I think your sense of colour is sound, but the jaggy background contrasts so sharply with the soft fuzziness of your beast, and it's distracting. You've got the basis for a solid piece here, and I saw the under-structure which seemed like a good start.

Fractalbot: Without anything next to your creature for scale, he just doesn't seem...big. I dig the back spines though.

PizzaExplosion: I think your rendering of viscosity is great, but this piece feels too murky for me to really have a feeling for the body masses. Furthermore, I can't picture it making the sounds, some of which sound like very heavy footfalls. (Yes, I'm biased towards bipeds, quadrapeds, and basically any-number-here-peds. I just keep hearing footfalls and bellows.) You have a lot of neat details (the ribbing of the body comes to mind).

Schwager: I think my number one issue with this is that it's pretty much like prehistoric boar-type creatures, or in other words, it's a little too close to pre-existing animals/concepts. I like how you tied it in with the Formorians though. Nice details on the ribs.

Lann: You have a nice choice of colour scheme, and I particularly liked the subtle scale patterns on the shoulders. The feet look awkward and problematic, particularly the splayed but very blunted claws on the forefeet. The back feet were less an issue for my brain.

Azathoth: I will always approve of tentacled animals, so bravo there. But I think you should check out some reference for the feet and claws. You have a similar issue to Lann's feet, in that the curve of the claws makes the creature look like they are floating or that the ground is..um...not interacting with the foot. Examine some bird and lizard skeletons and I think you will have a better grasp of how the toes/claws/various phalanges interact.

Markeshi: I really like your phoomba and the linework you've displayed has been delicate and perfectly weighted. That said, I still maintain the head is too big and the neck too long, so your animal falls into the category of Animals PixelFish Can't Help Worrying About. (On the other hand, if this is a known genetic trait, like hip dysplasia in corgis, you could always work it into the concept description.)

Lander: Yours is another case of me liking your initial sketch better. I particularly liked the sort of doubled up wrinkles around the mouth and the texture of the horns in the original.

Zephyri: Love the textures and use of colour. Also the mouth structure is wonderful. You provide a lot of textures that are recognisably different but which still work well together in evoking a forest creature and the habitat which it lives in.

Kishi: I like the markings and colours for the most part, but the redness in the paws seems almost too saturated to me. I know we have occasionally erratic and bold markings in nature too, like on various babboons and puffer birds and whatnot, but it's usually on a part of the body that has a different function than the body parts around it. (ie. airsacs, nodes, sphincters, pustules, etc.) Also I wish I could see more of the head structure, as it looks like he's looking straight up.

Blinckk: The ambience of the whale and its habitat is well evoked with the palette you use. I particularly like how the yellowy light plays off the deep blue greens. But as far as the creatures form goes, it feels a little too fuzzy for me to get a good idea of the masses involved. For example, I couldn't tell if those were nodes on the tail, or if that was light shining out through holes.

Sorry if I missed anybody. Great job all.

I voted for Zephyri this time because the concept of something animate being created from the inanimate was something unique in this round. :)

Wow great turnout. Voted for Longshao good concept, colourful rendering. Of course Jakkas great work just didn't think that energetic creature would make this particular sound. Zephyri nice render, I just don't picture your concept as a creature looks more like a cool constructed entity from some RPG or Magic the gathering. Electric goat nice unique concept but those thighs look a little weak, and I'm not too sure I'm sold on the shell. Just happy to keep participating and improving my skills,
keeping company with this crowd is like having the slave master's whip cracking your ass.

My vote went to Longshao for the uniqueness of the design and the idea of banging it's trunk against stuff to make the booming noise.. love it. Monsi and Jakkas would have been close second faves, especially monsi, I love the idea of the noise being an emitted sonic boom. Nice to see a good number of entries for this round too.. it's definitely something I'll be back for!

Hi there,
first time I'm taking part in this, so I'm pretty excited!

My vote goes to: electric goat
One of my favourite creatures and definitely my favourite piece of artwork overall. I just love the painting style and the open edges. Is this piece done traditionally or digitally?

Some other entries I really liked:
Maxim Verehin - Love the sense of scale of this one and quite a cool creature, too.
Kinonato - Nice creature and very nice execution. I’m quite fond of the skin patterns.
Monsi - Love it! Was a strong contender for my vote... the colours are just beautiful and I’m quite fond of the creature concept, too.
edujante - This one really cracked me up! Love the creature and artwork, but I can see why it came close to rejection.
Lexa - Cool creature and art, really like the colour scheme. I would have liked to see more texture on the creature's back and a bit more attention to the background, though.
jhagen22 - One of my favourite creatures this round that I liked since I saw the first sketch. Nice artwork too, if it weren't for the background/overall presentation.
Tommoy - Very cool idea. Would have liked to see a bit more detail in the artwork… especially the textures of skin and shell explored further.
JakkaS - I have to agree with everyone around here... you are a wicked artist! Love the creature and art, but I don’t think it’s the best fit for the brief.
Fractalbot - Very cool creature and great art, but I don't think it fits the sound that well. Love the colours, especially the spikes on the back.
longshao - Very very cool... another close contender for my vote. I just wish the creature could be seen a bit more clearly.
Zephyri - Another one I really really like and almost voted for. Love the textures and the ancient/fossil-like appearance.

Well done everyone... I'm so impressed!

Jakkas: gets my vote, looked at the image while listening to the sound and it fits perfectly.

Longshao:Great image but you didn't get my vote because your creature is wading through the water, and I don't really hear that when listening to the sound.

everyone elseTop notch entries!! Tough round.

My vote went to Jakkas. A hard decision between his and Longshao's but in the end, Jakkas' design and rendering won it for me.

Jakkas-Thanks man! I painted it in PS with the default chalk brush.

PixelFish- Why thank you!

Azahoth- Thanks for the crits!

OTTA- Thank you!

Schwager- Thanks! All digital baby! PS with the chalk brush.

Nice round!:yayca:

Ahchu - I really like the stone/ground texture of it, but the general shape of the creature doesn't look really new... But great feeling on the picture, I love the lighting. Simple but efficient.

Verehin - Good painting, but I think the general shape of the creature ended up a little bit awkward.

Kinonato - I can see that you really studied the sound, great iniciative. The drawings of the bones were a nice touch to it too... I just found the close ups unecessary, I really think next time you should take'em out so the picture will look clearer.

tonynokills - I can see that you had some nice ideas going on, the eyes popping out of the carapace, but I really think you should try to focus on how such parts would work, the eyes look "glued" to the carapace, you should try to find a way to make it work. Good idea anyway.

Mr.Wittmann - Good idea on the horn creating the sound. But as Fozzy said you should try to show more of the creature.

Agostinuke - I think the creature ended up looking too much like a T-Rex, even the general pose.

hillergren - The "mouth" of the creature reminds me of those old cars, nice touch. Anyway, I think you should've given the creature some material/color variation, great face anyway.

Localfatheaded - I love the expression on the creature's face, but unfortunatly I can' understand how the creature would walk, as I can't see it feet.

OTTA - I think you should've included something for size reference, and the creature paws ended up too human/monkey like for me.

Monsi - I love it! I looks like the creature is doing small jumps, real nice. Great rendering and execution of the piece too.

NMEZero - Good idea on the creature "shooting" stuff with its "scream", great description too with lots of layers of possibilities to the creature. My only crit would be the face, I think i've seen this kind of face lots of times before... Anyway, great creature.

Freha - Interesting rendering and color choice, but i'm not too sure about the double lighting.

PixelFish - I really liked the palette, and the idea of valves. Really nice creature, a strong candidate!

edujante - Good style man, I would love to see you develop this style into something more detailed but without loosing your touch.

nirudafat - It got a nice shape, you should try and polish it more.

Relic - This one reminded and old creature that I saw some time ago in COW, I think the theme was canyon digger... Anyway, good interpretation of the sound!

Lakai - I think some description about it could really help, I don't really understand how this creature works or what are these things on his head.

Tommoy - Cute creature, but maybe you should've keep his body snail like, Anyway, very nice face.

JakkaS - Great concept and great execution, seens like you really gave your best shot on this one. How long did it take?. Great creature and very fierce expression.

Fractalbot - Interesting shape, I love the twisting-muscular structure of the creature, maybe you should've included that in your "sound design", the creature twisting itself to release the sound. Good stuff.

Pizza Explosion - I really like the black tentacles on the creature's mouth, cool stuff!

Azathoth - You've got some good ideas on the creature's face, But i'm not that sure about the general body shape.

markeshi - Good idea on the creature scream and nice style of the rendering.

longshao - I think you really nailed the sound very well. I love the colors on the creature too, the mix between red and green is great.

electric goat - Great cartoony feeling to it, good execution too.

Lander - Very hellish face, good creature but I think the rendering could've been pushed a little bit more.

Zephyri - Very interesting creature, I love the wood texture on it. I could see this creature working in a game like Diablo 3 for example. It looks real nice.

Tough round to decide, lots of entries and lots of good ideas going on. JakkaS kicked endless amounts of ass with the rendering, but my vote goes to longshao for the nailing down of the sound.

Great work guys, inspirational as always.
If I let someone out, sorry, didn't knew what to say!
Cheers!

AhChu: I liked the massive size of your creature. Texture was a good choice too.

Verehin: Your creature looks pretty good within your design and environment. I just would have liked to have seen it worked on a bit more.

Kinonato: Good work on this one. Nice presentation. I only think the color could have been pushed further.

Skinny: I'm so-so on this one. Needed to be worked on more.

tonynokills: I liked how unique your design was compared to the rest. Reminded me of a virus.

Mr. Wittmann: I dug your horn design, but the color looks flat.

MoHog: Not bad. I like the frog-like throat design.

Agostinuke: A bit too much like a T-Rex for me (an existing creature).

Ham-e: Very tribal Bigfoot.

hillergren: Interesting texture, but I didn't like the anatomy. Too cartoony for my taste.

localfatheaded: It's pretty good from the waist up. But where's the legs?

Otta: Good design. Nice detail work.

monsi: Cool style on this design. Reminds me of Sam Keith.

NMEZero: Okay, this one got my vote. I really dug the black and white to color progress. And the design was really cool. I liked the interaction of two creatures to create the sound.

Freha: Not bad. Nice fantasy type of piece.

PixelFish: I liked your design for how the sound occurs. Just wanted to see more work on it.

SirJohanna: Supernatural and cool. I really liked it from the neck up.

edujante: Definitely liked this one a lot. Very cool artwork. I guess in the c.o.w. though detail and expressive anatomy is key to explain the week's topic the best.

sturnus: Nice realistic look to this creature of yours. I really liked it. I would love to see you continue in the c.o.w.s.

nirudafat: Looks like a pretty good start. Needed work.

Jur: Great piece of art. Nice creature.

Relic: An alright creature. Took me a while to figure out what was going on with it.

Lexa: Looks like a start of an okay piece. Needs work.

Lakia: Fun, cool piece. Would be a great animated character.

Tommoy: I could definitely see this creature coming up with the sound.

realitychek: Pretty good. I like the design.

Jakkas: I really love the painting skills you show off. Very inspiring.

Fractalbot: It's an alright start. It's a little simple looking for me.

Pizza Explosion: Looks like something out of a nighmare...cool.

schwager: I like the ridable beast aspect of your creature.

LANN: Very cool horn design on your creature.

Azathoth: Not bad, just needs more work.

markeshi: I like the creature, but I really dug the graphic art style of your piece.

longshao: Great creature and a great composition to your piece.

electric goat: Great and fun piece.

Lander: Nice creature. Definitely could see that belting out the noise.

zephyri: Almost chose this one. Really liked this creature.

kischi: A little rough for me, but an okay creature.

Blinckk: Kinda tough for me to tell what was going on with your creature at first.

Wow, so many entries in this one. Cool ideas everyone!:yayca:
My vote went to JakkaS, sweet render and idea. It really feels the sound could come from something like that.

My second choice was longshao, nice idea here too and well executed. I like the environment you made to it as well.

hillergren you always have crazy ideas, as I mentioned before the mouth area looks a bit like those old cars, and that's pretty awesome. Well defined volumes and fun to see you experimenting with custom brushes. Would be nice if you played more with sharp edges and crisp details, to lead the eye to the important parts more. Right now it all has that airbrushed feel over it.

sorry for not writing something about the rest too, some other day. :D
