I am doing some still lifes in a basic drawing class and have some soft, med., and hard Priosmacolor charcoal pencils now. I am wondering what others use? I would like a better scale over soft, med, hard.

Thanks

I use conte 1710 B. You should definitely look for them. I really hated drawing with charcoal until I picked these up. They go on the paper so smooth and easy, like butter!

I use the same as panda. I use 2b though. General's charcoal pencils are too scratchy for my taste.

the contes are okay, and they are the most widely available. The b's are good, but if your heavy handed go hb. Theres the wolffs carbon pencil which is okay, but you gotta go really soft, like 6b. I'm sure theres other good stuff just waiting to be tried too. But i don't think i have used anything better so far than an "old" ritmo. They're will be a few who know what i'm talking about :D But they don't make those anymore, so....

I am going to try to find some Conte's on-line. I have called several local places here and nothing, surprising considering we have CCS here

You won't find anymore 'Old' Ritmos because tinyhands and fredflickkstone have them all locked up in a fallout shelter underneath the Rockie mountains. If the apocalypse comes, they'll still have their Ritmos :D
