Hey CA, hey friends....

It's been over a year since I posted my last thread in this section. So much stuff has happened since then, that I'm still amazed at how many experiences fit into just 365 days.
On the 16th of June our son Adrian was born, healthy, louder than his dad and a true character. For the past three months my wife and I have been watching him grow, poop, burp, laugh, cry, figure out how to put his fist into his mouth and many more things. So many things have changed since then, I crash before 11 pm from sheer exhaustion and wake up around 6 am, because Adrian want's to be carried around and entertained. Also this year, I decided to finally open up the SIXMOREVODKA Studio in Berlin. This has been a long plan of mine that is finally coming to fruition. I always felt the life of an artist or illustrator to be very lonesome, so the Studio is supposed to become an anchor for my social life and a headquater for future operations. Check the end of the post for some Photos.
Marvel still keeps me busy and I enjoy the working relationship more than ever. I found great friends along the editors and management and the work has brought me to a ton of strange places over the past year.
Since the New Zealand Workshop is approaching and I will be teaching there, I just want to use this thread to give you guys an idea of what to expect and to hopefully sign up if you have a chance.

But now, off to the art.

While I was working on THOR, Marvel approached me with an idea for a Variant cover for one of their issues. The asked me to take the pencils of the regular penciller Oliver Coipel and paint it into a cover. They said I'd have free reign with the image, so I did what I could, played around and painted it up. This was a ton of fun and Olivier and I ended up becoming good friends during the process.

Olivier's pencils:

This cover was a collaboration between me and the Inker Danny Miki. It was the first time I had my pencils inked by somebody else. When I got the finished inks back from him, I colored the piece digitally in PS.

I was fortunate enough to work on two issues of THOR for Marvel this year. This was the first time I had to complete an entire comicbook, something I failed doing while I was younger. This was a really outstanding experience, since the deadline was a turbocrunch and I had to work on something that I had never done before. The challenge was great and I completed the interiors for both books in 10 days each.

MAGNETO

This was one of the rare occasions where I was able to tackle some different non-superhero stuff. The Magneto mini-series basically tells the origin story of Magneto during the time of the Nazis. This was a great job that I enjoyed from start to finish.

Still doing my duties on this series. I like the book and the character a lot, loads of moody stuff or graphic narration that one can use for the covers.

Similar to the collaboration I did with Olivier Coipel early this year, Marvel reapproached me for a few more of these.

Congrats on the baby! While I can't imagine what it's like to be making such art on a regular basis, I bet you feel more proud of being a dad? I know that's how I feel. I'm still waiting for all these pics to download, but if there's no drawing of your son, I hope to see some soon. As you can see in my avatar, mine's my favorite muse of late. There's a thread in the lounge called Humorous Moments, etc, and we've been posting alot about family and children. It'd be great if you shared some stories there.

Oh, and thank you very very much for sharing all this!!! I always learn a great deal from your work.

WOW! you sure do make up for a years worth of not posting!
Congratulations on having a child!( He even has his hair done like yours in a way!) One of the best things if not the best thing a person can experience.
Personally, I especially love the part when I look into my 3 year old son's eyes and for that moment, all the bullshit in the world just melts away.

And those thor pencils are mind blowingly good!
Respect to you and thanks for the inspiration!

( P.S. You are aware that we are all quaking in fear of your son's artistic abilities right? I mean, look how talented his parents are! )

i'll probably post again in this thread, just for the sake of ass patting.

It's nice to have stuff like the sixmorevodka studio happening closer to home instead of a gazillion, billion miles away on a small uninhabited part of another continent only reachable by sherpa or halo skydiving.

Hey Marko!
This is one massive update hehe, very interesting to look at. I've seen some of them before, stumbling upon them as I surf around.

Your art is looking good. Very nice use of colours and the compositions are tight as always. I'm surprised how some of them are very loose. Cool to see those go through to print as well and not only the tight renders.

Nice to see the steps of how you paint as well.

If i have to pick something I like the most I must say it's your compositions. They are very strong.

Congratulations on your kid! He's gorgeous! I had a kid as well, on September 7th this year.

Anyways, enough of asspats haha, you'll get tons more ;)

cheers

I just spent about 3 hours looking at all these pieces. Really appreciate you taking the time to do these mega posts, really inspirational to myself and hundreds others here at ca.

My roomie has a poster that looks ALMOST dead on to your hulk walking render, but it has a bunch of post digital jibberish on it. Not sure if it is your work or if someone did a version based on yours.

My favorites are the Centaur/Hercules fight cover, The Howard the duck cover, The piece of thor jumping over top of the frost giant, Hulk movie concept where he is leaping frontwards, and the daredevil secret invasion piece with the lightning going nutty in the background.

congrats on the child again, congrats on everything. Keep it up

Strange how much someone you've never met can mean so much you. I could look at these works forever.

It's ironic how you draw superheroes, when you are one yourself. No, seriously dude, don't just laugh it off.

September 27th, 2008, 06:31 PM
WOW dude, awesome work
your work really is as good as ever,

I could go on and on ass licking your work, and telling u how much u where an inspiration to me back in the dayswhen i just started drawing and even now. but instead of that i'm gonna give u some quick crits.

First off: "im in no position to critisize your work, u are an amazing artist (but hey i'm doing it anyways)

your colours and your brushstrokes look a bit dull, even tho they still look amazing, I guess this is cause of the amount of work u have to finnish in time, altho when i see the covers of your work in my hands (and not on the computer screen) they look much much better, Once again I'm not even close to how good u are, and i'm not trying to diss u here, just telling u that the colours could use a bit more attetion, cause sometimes u do amazing shit with your colours, and sometimes well sometimes its a bit dull, i guess they can use more uhm...variation or contrast... also i don't now if marvel has a say in this or not.

ANYWAYS, don't take it as a crit, its probebly just my eyes

another thing (and this is not a crit but a compliment) I wanted to point out how amazed i am by your skill in composition, its trully mindblowing, the work u have done in a year and the problems u need to solve for every illustration are just amazing, great work.

I wish u all the luck with your lady and your new born kid. He looks adoreable.

Godspeed and good luck with your sixmorevodka.

thx allot for this post i've waited for it for months ;)

(ps: do forgive my poor english :()

as flashy and disgustingly competent as the painitings are, with their screaming well muscled dudes and glowy parts, ill always love your drawings the most. i love every minute of your linework. always have, blah blah blah. great post man. i knew it had to be coming at some point.

one of these days you will be sitting in your studio, and you are going to smell something strange. you will get up to find the source of this odor, only to find me over by that couch, taking a shit on the floor.
"CORO! why are you shitting on my floor?!"" you will ask me.
"so we have a place to make love." is how i will answer you.

A real work of art takes on a life of its own (or something like that). Your son is gonna be a work of art that takes 70 years or so........ (cute wip, though.... shows awesome promise)

Sounds like you're in a very good place. And if I ever make it round the corner from you, I like my coffee with milk and one sugar....

Magneto paintings are flooring. Absolutely stunning.

Also, Ghost Rider pissing is my favorite comic book illustration I've seen this year. As much as I love your paintings, your pencils are where it's at for me.

Truly epic post. Should be immediately shuffled into a prominently positioned sticky for life-long forum enjoyment.

Good luck with the little demon seed!

Always nice with an update from you Marko,
specialy like the Ghstrider pieces and the "off-light" ones.
he sketches and linework are ace as per usual.

The collabs are really good, but I think the ones you do from start to finnish yourself are better.

Brun said that your colours look a bit dull.
I agree, on some occations it seems like they are dull, almost like you put a 10% white over them, in some they are very vibrant though, Im thinking ArtDirection though...

Wasker beat me to it, but you do know your son is havingthe same haircut as you right? There is no way you can escape being called his dad on sight!

Although your illustrations are good, compare to them I actually like your THOR#7 comic better...somehow the character and things in there seems to be more "alive" in there, maybe it's because of the composition, or perhaps some sense of liveness or movement was lost during the coloring process. Anwyay, overall good work.

Well, I guess it's time to have courage and write to you Marko, since I'm a HUGE fan, for VERY personal reasons - I became aware of your existence a couple years ago, just when a great turnaround in my life put me in the way of arts and illustration, where really I should belong... We have some very specific similarities in our lifes (don't take me wrong, I'm not assuming that I know everything about you!), and this fact got me insighting about how life is great when we know our place in the world...
Congrats not only for your work, but for being this supercool person you are, providing us with such a infinite inspiration. Wish I could talk to you someday!
Ich lieb dich you crazy barbarian!

Nice! Collabs are always cool, so I hope there will be more jams with inkers in the future, would be interesting to see what clean guys could do with your stuff such as Dell, Townsend and Vines, as well as more gritty inkers like Janson and Reinhold.

Really interesting to see the end result when you do your stuff over other pencillers as well. Love the Coipel paintjob.

Yeah Marko... looks like I gotta jump on the "I wanna hump your leg in the hopes that some of your artistic ability rubs off on me" band wagon. Jaw droppingly gorgeous work.

Don't know how often you check this, but I recently attempted a chalk mural recreation of one of your pieces. The Thor cover with the blue background. I got about 5-6 hours in on it before, ironically enough, the God of Thunder was wiped out by a light shower.

I made a thread for it, photos can be found here:

Marko Chalk Mural Attempt (http://conceptart.org/forums/showthread.php?t=136880)

I really hope I get another shot at recreating one of your works soon, preferably at a larger show where people can get to see the piece, and not at a small art festival where rain washes it away in a matter of moments.

Keep inspiring all of us!
Eric

Things I love:
The black/white/red Magneto pieces
That awesome Spidey suit
The glowing veins on the Hulk
The kid!

Damn Elwell already said what I was going to say about the latest stuff. Oh well. lol

I will say again thanks for the posting the sketches and some of your WIPs it helps more than you may know. Again you prove to be a source of inspiration for the self-taught guys like me. Congrats on your career and family I wish you the best man.

:wtf: Holy mother of Mosses on a pogo stick jumping around Berlin wall (what is left of it) and singing <<Ich habe keine Lust mich nicht zu hassen
Hab' keine Lust mich anzufassen Ich hätte Lust zu onanieren...>> your post got me so pumped up minute by minute ... you have a cute kid , he has that long hair in the top of the head just like , that's funny , you know he really looks like you , in a few months he will be strong enough to rip that pierce from your nose . There is not much to say about your works that others did not say before me . When i was your last notes of your trip i almost fell from my chair ... so... between 13-15th October you will have me hanging on your leg like a chiwawa in heat.

All the best ...vodka , G.Roman

P.S. I'm sorry i took the liberty of adding a bubble on one of your drawings when i saw it it just banged me over the head like a shovel.

WOW !! I.N.C.R.E.D.I.B.L.E. as always Marko! Can't wait for a Marko's Marvel Artbook. All this pieces are easily recognizable with your style but you're always successful in adding new graphic approaches, different color palette and finding fresher and cooler design. You're the Master.
Congrats for all of them and even more for your son!!

Pretty nice work. I'm working on a book that needs an artist and I think you'd do ok. I can't pay you up front but if the book makes any money I've cut you in. You can use the work for your portfolio. It's a good way to get your work out there.

Seriously though. You, sir, are a badass.

Give us some details on your involvement in the Hulk movie stuff. I've seen a lot of stuff that looks just like the Hulk stuff you posted.

With that extra office space you've got you should start a sperm bank. Just collect from all the "love" in this thread and you're set.

Cute kid too.

Holy @#$! A mini Marco! Heh! that has to be your best work so far!

For the drawn stuff, well, there's only 1-2 I haven't seen printed, and they too rocked my socks off! After a couple of years of following your work, I can definately say that at least between Marvel illustrators, you are one of the few that really deservingly earned your fame!!! I mean, from hunting down your covers before, I now walk in a comic store, and the marvel stand is full of your pieces. It's not only that I love your style, it's that it honestly "works" with some characters so well, it's as if you created them!

I hope that extra space next to the office is gonna involve comics, superhero movies, video games, arts, booze, boobies and babes in general, although that heavenly combination is yet to be concieved....

Anyway, you know you kick our asses up and down the forum every day, and you know we like it! All the best!!!

Congratulations. Your kid is truly beautiful. Henrik told me ages ago that your wife was pregnant, so it's cool to see the pictures.

As for the studio. That shit is dope! I give you 3 weeks before that shit gets less tight and messy though ;)

If you don't mind me speculating the purpose of the other stores. Perhaps, a studio for your wife, an art gallery or a fashion atelier of some kind.

Last but not least, This batch of work is great in many regards. On a personal note though, I tend to miss some of your 'more' personal pencilled art. Still enjoy some of the stuff you did for Dissonance for example.

I understand the reality of doing an assload of commercial work.
Yet I kind of hope you have a batch of twisted Marko mind boggles accumilating in the background.

Rock on.

I cant wait until the day I can acquire some studio space. Its much more comfortable & preferred for me to work where there is allot of Natural Light shining in.
That extra space you have seems much larger that your studio itself. Perhaps a Clothing line/store is in the works. Just a wild guess :)

Jeez! Yeah its a cliche, and yeah I know it has to suck for you that hardly anyone has anything really constructive to say besides, your shit rocks!
Ofcourse I dig your work at Marvel, love the comics you have done there, espescially the Magneto cover, lovely piece!

But, in my opinion where you really shine is how insanely creative you are when it comes down to concepting.
Thats why I absolutely am in love with those Spidey concepts you did,
for some reason no matter how sick the pieces you show in this thread are, they are even head and shoulders above those!

I was looking at those and thinking, why did no one ever come up with that, just like you did with the X-Men.
I think they are bold, creative and different and I hope I am not going to far with saying that
they even should let you do a (fill in superhero name here) "Marko" original.
Let you do the concepting of the super hero in question, the story arcs, and what ever,
because man you do it better then anyone on this planet, even those who originally created them in the first place!

Good luck to you, your life, your son, your wife, and your studio.
And I really gotta drop by and see you studio or lessons with my own eyes, I still regret that I didnt come by
years and years back when you replyed/e-mailed and said I could, I was so psyched about that way back then.
So when I have my own life up and running, and hopefully that is soon, the first thing I am going to do is just that!

Thanks for this post, inspiring as always, I gotta reach my goals like you are doing, or else I am never going to be happy ;) !
So in other words, also thanks for the big kick in the butt, and the huge reminder of what I gotta gotta gotta do!

Marko, you work in the series had been exciting and a great addition to everything going on in the books. Either it be your interiors or your aid in the covers.
Im looking forward to finding out what gonna happen next. Especially after being sent this image from a friend.

Ohh man, it’s so nice to see your latest work. I have been always inspired by your pencil work (the posing, the concept, everything), in fact, it’s what encouraged me to start rendering my sketches and also do a better work when posing my characters and creatures, but now you’re showing more sketches and color pieces and goodness, it’s another giga punch of inspiration to me and surely to many artists out there.
And how about your boy? My best thoughts and wishes for him. Children definitely change our lives in a very special way, I can tell you that by the experience I had taking care of my nephew for several years and also sharing some great and hilarious moments with my two nieces.

And hey, your studio kicks ass! I particularly like the way the colors are placed on the different walls. Framing the window in a brighter color looks pretty cool.

Anyways, keep working hard and thanks so much for sharing your work whenever possible. It’s an honor to have you among us.

Cheers!
