hey there, it's my first time posting in these forums. everyone here seems awesome and i'm looking for your opinions on some of my work. this was sculpted out of super sculpey and painted it with airbursh paints. and it stands about 2 feet tall. designed as a a two part to a big battle scene between godzilla and biolantte (his plant like sister) biolantte was also redesigned and stands 3 feet tall. will post pics of her later.

Hi there, welcome to CA!
Great first post, must look pretty awesome with such scale in real life.
Have you more work to show us?
My only crit would be I'm not so keen on the shiny finish but I understand it's probably varnish of somekind for protection :)

Look forward to your next piece!

thank you so much for the kind words. I have ALOT more work to show lol. its amazing how i didnt know about this forum for so long, i'm really out of touch with the whole online thing, but its really cool. And this place is awesome.

i also dislike the shine, for some reason i cant find a black airbursh paint or brown for that matter that doesnt leave this shiny finish. i didnt even apply anything to it other than the paint itself. any suggestions?

Where did you bake a 2 foot tall sculpture o_o'

fritofrito
September 27th, 2008, 07:16 PM
in a furnace at school

lol Lucky. Full Sail makes you bake your maquettes at home, therefore anything bigger than a foot gets owned.

biolantte stands about 3 feet tall, cooked in a furnace, took about 3 months to complete and cost about 400 dollars.

made out of sculpey.

to Godzilla: there are some things you should correct if you make a Godzilla next time: at first: it seems his lower (or under) cheek(is it called like that) is a bit ...uhm....its not straight enough i think....it seems like there is a curve in it...dont know how to say it^^

the other things i see, are the tail: i havent seen any dinasour (or something similar) that could make his tail this "curvy" ....(damn i forgot some words XD)
and the way his feets are....he couldnt stay...

he would fall over his back if he try to stand like this because his butt have mmore weight than his upper body...

just my suggestions^^

the second sculpt is really nice^^ i love the details in it ^^ specially the red glow on his "upper" body^^ it looks like it has a heart or something like this^^

btw. is it a plant? or more an animal?

You must not be familiar with the Godzilla films at all...easily forgivven if you go out and rent them. Then you will understand why these are anatomically better than the original! Keep up the good work frito!!!!

@maddmaestro

i didnt say its bad ;)

but i dont think it should be an artists aim to just be better than others.....his aim should be: be better than yourself ;)

and i dont think he has posted it to just hear : oh wow its really great, PERFECT!

i mean....i wouldnt be satisfied myself if people just say that ;)

i dont think he would be that far he already IS in his sculpting abilities, if he wouldnt critizies every time he makes a new sculpt ;) but lets see what he say to my suggestions^^

anyway....

btw. i know the godzilla films...the older and the new ones^^ and i still like them^^ (even if i dont know all films ;) )

ah btw. i love your sculpts frito^^ i like the atmosphere and the feeling they gave me if i watch them^^ go on with you work ;) im pleased to see them^^

hi there. i see what your saying and it totally makes sense. there were a couple of problems when sculpting the legs that well it pretty much did collapse under its own weight b/c my armature was not strong enough at the legs. so had to fix it and make it straight instead of the trademark curve at the foot so it could stand, the foot on the other side has it. but thank you for the advince :)

but yeah total things i would def take into consideration next time. i guess what i wanted to accomplish was to redesign godzilla, make him look angry but still keeping true to the original, now that i have this design i can take it a couple steps foward next time.

and biolantte is godzilla's sister, cross mutated with godzilla dna and plant dna. redesigned her a bit too.

here is what i used for inspiration in terms of the stace:

oh no worries man, if your an artist and can't take criticism then what are you doing lol. i decided to post my stuff on here b/c people seem to know what they are talking about, are respectful and nice and give constructive criticism which is awesome.

anyway thank you, i'll be posting some more soon.

Wow I'd hoped you had more great work hiding, and boy did you deliver!

Biolantte has left me speechless really, I really admire your dedication to your art, $400 dollars doesn't just drop out the sky!
Keep going man dedication like this will surely bring you 'enlightenment'? :)

Hmm the paint shine, well that's a whole thread discussion in itself
-which paint to use?

Knightmare my favourite from the series. The sculpt looks fab, did you use resin for the blade? Looks slightly transparent?
My crit is on the paint job, overall is great but up close you could really 'sell it' by going in with a super super fine brush a sharpening up those gold lines on his armour. Also just my opinion I think the eyes get lost a little maybe stick a highlight colour on?

Phew essay, overall you got mad skills. More please!!!

hey there! thanks for the kind words, they are greatly appericiated :)

the sword on nightmare is actually super sculpey, i added many layers of paint on it, some clear bronze over the blue, some orange and scarlet and then more clearish bronze, then more bronze then more orange and so worth lol. i'm glad you think it looks transperant cuz that means i did my job, cuz his sword is kinda transperent, orange crystal like thing.

the gold lines i guess are just a personal perf. i totally see what you mean and it was actually like that before, but i really wanted to give it that dirt feel, i dunno if i captured it or not, i kinda think i did, but who knows, i wanted to make the gold look old and i guess worn down. to almost not being there at all. before when the gold just seemed too clean for this guy. but just a matter of opinion. and i totally agree with the eyes being a bit lost in there, will def. look into that.

Yeh I totally get the worn look now, after all this guy's been in a few scraps:)
Great job on the sword!

He has a well designed set of armor, and the colors work pretty well, but the sword does not say giant evil knight bad ass to me. It says orange butter knife, though the hilt looks fine. Oh, the demon hand looks sweet.

hey there here is a ogre that i designed. it is part of a battle display with another ogre type creature that my friend designed.

this is made with super sculpey and painted with airbursh paints.

basically what i was going for was to make this one bad ass looking monster, friggin ripped and just angry as hell lol.

i'm lacking some good pics, but these are decent. put two up some with more dramatic lighting and the other just normal.

let me know what you think.

While your designs are very, very complex (amazing, in that aspect), I noticed that on the Godzilla piece, as well as the ogre piece - neither of them look like they can actually shut their jaws. The teeth are either too bulky, misaligned, or both. I think if you work that out in future pieces, they'd look a lot more believable.

Fantastic Godzilla~!
As for getting rid of the shine from the paint, try Testors Dullcote.

Oh, you are; sick, twisted, in need of medical help, as well as brilliant. That ogre is sooo sickly twisted. His neck looks like muddy tree roots and his sternum is scary as hell. { this is all a positive response, in case you hadn't gleaned that previously} I love your work. I grew up with ziller and I always thought that they could have done a lot better makeing him scary. You fixed him!

Mah ' Crub

ps, I spray a coat of satin or flat laquer over anything that I want to kill the shine on. But you know,,, I kind'a like the shinny! Looks wet, slimy.

Are you planning to cast your sculptures into resin or whatever?
Painting work is also brilliant!
