That being said, do we only request certain pieces to be appealed and not our entire portfolio?
REDiceT
April 8th, 2010, 10:19 PM
I got my sister to do it :/
Just be as polite and formal as possible and avoid asking for lost causes. Get your friends (especially those with art experience) to look at your portfolio and ask them if you're not sure which pieces should be appealed for. The most important thing I've learned is to look at your portfolio from a fresh eye - an objective eye - before sending that letter.
In my opinion, the Presentation portion of the portfolio is highly subjective and, assuming you got 2s in some pieces for that while getting 3s for others, it is worth a shot. Sections like structure, proportions and perspective have less leeway so only go for those if you are truly sure it was "unfairly marked".
What ended up happening for me is that not only did I get the marks I requested for but I got more on top of that (EDIT: That said, I also didn't get more marks on things that I knew, for sure, was a lost cause. My animal drawings are laughable.) Despite the strict portfolio process, the markers were human after all! :)
Good luck.
Oh. D:> Well okay, I guess this is where my English essay skills come in heh heh. *planned for an English major before lol ><!*
Thank you for the advice! I'll have my friends look at it *Angelaaaa~* and maybe I can grab some teachers too!
@ Fraction/Angela: THANK YOU ANGELA!! I think i will need your help on this one!! I'll see you in class tomorrow~!
@ Adidawg: I think that's the idea. ><! It'd sound kind of selfish if we asked for our entire portfolio to be re-evaluated.

Received my score sheet today. 60/100. The passmark was 59.
But still no change on access Sheridan.
I should receive an offer right? I hope they don't reconsider.

Which program is it by the way?
Probably just wait a day or two, or e-mail them about it?

I found out I got into the animation program last week (huge happy/dorky grin) but haven't gotten my scores yet, probably because I live in the USA and it'll take longer to send. Hopefully I'll get them today, I'm curious to see what I got.
Anyways, extremely excited to start school here!

I know! This makes me crazy and mad at them!
I emailed them about it, and Jennifer Crane (Admission Specialist for the Bachelor of applied Arts) replied that today (friday) is the final day of offers of admission. I just don't get it. If I passed both, how hard is it to change my status, why keep it to the last day, last minute. I'm from Montreal and this is a huge thing for me as I have to start planning the move as early as possible.
It really has been a torture for the past couple of days... you know how it feels.
I don't even want to imagine how hard the wait must be on the waitlist!
For those on the waitlist, keep strong!
Edit: I applied to Illustration btw

Hi guys, I came back for questions again. ><
Someone before had told me that I needed to schedule a meeting before asking for an appeal? Is that true, or I should just send a letter?
Who do I direct the mail to?
Also, should we provide photocopies or something of the piece you want re-evaluated? I'm not sure how the score-changing process works here, but I'm guessing if they want to change the score, they'll need to see the picture? (Unless they have copies of it... somehow?)

Hey did you request the "Admission Decision Review Procedure" from them? I called them earlier today and they sent me that attachment.
According to Step 2 of the procedure: An applicant must submit a request in writing to the Registrar within ten (10) working days of the date of
the original admission decision.

Just sent admission a mail because i just woke up and it's obviously too late to call...Ain't night shift fun.
I'm starting to think they make "out-of-province" applicants wait on purpose(from quebec too).

The thing is they didn't even check my cegep transcript untill today! I had to call them and ask what was going wrong. She called me back in like 40 minutes saying that i met all the requirements. I suppose they leave the quebec transcripts for the very end, because...??? they're different from ontario ones? i don't know.
you definately should call Sheridan. You will speak with Jennifer crane (you can dial the # which corresponds with person's name). She is very polite and easy to deal with.

I'm guessing they don't work on Saturday to Sunday, so I'll have to wait till Monday to call. By the way, where can I find the correct number to call? Is it in the access sheridan site?
Also, does anyone know whens the deadline for appeal?
And, do I hand in the letter and resubmissions in mail or can I give in person?

Hey Mello, I hope you're still online!
I emailed information.sheridan@sheridanc.on.ca today, and they gave me a rather quick reply and attached the outline for the appeal process. Looks like they're working on weekends too?
I hope this excerpt helps answer your questions:
"An applicant must submit a request in writing to the Registrar within ten (10) working days of the date of
the original admission decision. For purposes of this policy, applicants are deemed to have received the
decision ten (10) days after the date of mailing by Sheridan to the address contained in the applicant’s
application form. The letter must state clearly the reasons why the appeal is being requested, the facts
that the applicant considers to be relevant to the admission decision review, as well as any previous
attempts to address the situation."
This is step two of the appealing process.
Step one asks you to contact the Admission's Office to ask why you have been declined first, and when you're not satisfied with their explanation, THEN you can write them a letter.
EDIT: I should really think before I post so I could stop editing a million times. xD
QUESTION! This year's minimum to make the wait list is 2.81 to a 2.98. If my mark is changed to be high enough to make the wait list (assuming it was high enough to be admitted like the others who have been wait listed and got in) would I get in as well? Or would my mark have to be changed until it makes the minimum score for admission? (2.99+?)

A while ago when I got accepted to art fundamentals, I got a letter which said to register for a "Discover Sheridan" academic information session on April 24. For the people who are already in Sheridan, is this just like the Open House they had back in November where you get general infomation then tour the campus or is this session different? My father thinks it's a waste of time if it's the same thing, but it says it's exclusive for "successful applicants" so should I go? Is anyone else going?
I guess if I go I could bring my portfolio and ask the faculty what I can improve on, but the travel distance is a problem...

Anything 'Discover Sheridan' would just be a tour sort of thing, probably very similar to the one you already went on. There won't be any profs there or anyone who could give you feedback on your art.

Your teacher's job is more so to make sure you aren't thrown in to an industry you aren't at all prepared for. Being preemptively rushed into a program you aren't ready for isn't going to help anyone in the long run.
That being said, if you truly believe your evaluation was unfair, it doesn't hurt to call. If the worst case scenario is being told 'no' a second time, you wouldn't have lost anything. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. :)

Hi Folks.
I posted info on the upcoming public information session at Sheridan in the lounge forum, but I figured that there are probably some Fundi's students here who will benefit from this so I've put the info here as well....
This Wednesday April 14 we'll be holding an info session about the Animation Portfolio Workshop in the Art Fundamentals Department at Sherdan, Trafalgar campus.
We'll be in room A-107 from 11am to 12pm.
Vince Peets the Director of our program will be giving the presentation , and we'll have some former Workshop students on hand with successful animation school entry portfolio's for all to view.
This will help some of you to get an idea of the type of portfolio that's getting a student into Sheridan these days.
All are welcome.

Hey Mello, sorry for the late response! I e-mailed them with my hotmail account. :>
As for calling them to ask why you have been declined, I think it's a good idea to try anyways. There really isn't anything to lose; it might even give you ideas on what pieces you should appeal for. And it might help you for next time too. :>
Plus, you can always ask for appeals on criteria like "believable character" and stuff. When I look under their criteria, some of it just kind of strikes me up as subjective.
For me, I have a sort of weird situation... in my case, my room drawings' line quality was actually a mess, but they gave me a three. However, the line quality on my character were MUCH cleaner, but they gave me a two. I wanted to ask them about that. :9 If you have some odd comparisons to something like this, you might want to ask them about this too?

There's a lot of dislike for res, but I've been in res three times now, because I really like the closeness of it, and meeting new people every year. It's expensive and annoying at times, but I still think the experience is worth it. I met a lot of great people this year, and there are 24+ aged people living in res. Currently I'm 23 so I doubt 24 will be a big deal at all. You will meet a lot of people from residence if you get involved in the events res puts out, otherwise it will be difficult.
The drawback is the majority of people in res are around 18, so relating to people can be a bit difficult sometimes, as well as people experiencing life outside home for the first time at a younger age.
So while res does have its downsides, there are plenty of good things to say about it, as well.
edit: and I've just noticed res discussion was quite a few pages back...but better late then never

Sorry to worry you, and yes, I e-mailed them, asked them how much longer we have to wait, and that was their response.
That's really weird... maybe it's because my English credits haven't been turned in yet (my school is not semestered) so they're making my take this test, but that still wouldn't make much sense since I'll be getting the credits by the end of June.
And if I remember correctly, the purpose of this test is to see how good your English skills are so they'd place you in the appropriate class for your level? But if that's the case, everyone else should have gotten something like this?
Now I'm a little unsure lol. Are you sure you haven't gotten the language assessment e-mail they sent to your Sheridan mail? My other friend who is going to be in fundies this year has gotten this, and so did my sister... but my friend who has gotten into animation didn't get this e-mail.

Yes I'm positive that I didn't get such email from them. Did you by any chance accept their offer to fundy because I didn't. If you did accept their offer to fundy then it would make much sense since fundy doesn't specifically require an ENG4U credit but ENG4C can pass while Animation only requires ENG4U. Again, if you did accept their offer, then my best guess is that they would require you to take a test to see how well your English is in comparison to other people who applied (because people who are applying to fundy are widely ranged from both ENG4C or ENG4U while ENG4U only for animation, less range). If you didn't accept their offer to fundy then you definitely should call them for clarification. :[

don't quote me on this but if i remember correctly, last year my friend changed offer from fundy to animation D:
My guess is that they would allow you to since it would've wasted their time to be reviewing portfolios of people that wont even going.
once again, it'll probably help if you contact them :)

hey, I have a quick question. I'm filling out a scholarship application for Sheridan... it's asking me for "Total books/supplies cost". Any idea around what it'll be for Art Fundamentals? I can't really find an answer anywhere, figured I'd ask.
They usually give you a giant bag full of supplies for Fundies dont they? I usually put 500 as a default book/supply cost. I dont know how many supplies you have to buy for fundy but in animation nothing is supplied so spend spend spend yay.

Hi Adidawg! I got my letter today, and it looks like I'm doomed to going to fundies this year haha.
I didn't expect much; in my letter, I just felt like I was clinging on to straws, and I think they found me out, though they did raise the score for my character rotation.
There better be some hot fundies guys!!! >:U Anyways good luck to you, and I hope you had better luck!
Also, I'm applying for OSAP, and they're asking about a course load and how much % I'm going to be taking? Since I'll be a full-time student there, I assume I should be writing 100%?
Just needed some clarification on that! :C

Hey! I'm really sorry to hear that :(... what do you mean by they found you out? Did they say they did? What else does the letter contain? (sorry for asking too many questions. I'm just really anxious to know about the letter).
I'm not sure about writing for OSAP because I didn't apply for it.. sorry!

Haha it's okay! I'm sure it'll be just as fun. :>
OH, what I meant by "found out" was that maybe they read my struggle to justify myself and decided to just put me out of my misery HAHA. In short: I wasn't able to persuade them because I couldn't persuade myself.
The letter just explained how even though they've changed my mark, it wasn't high enough to get in. They also say what criteria they've changed. Attached was my new scoresheet.
It's okay, I'm asking all around about OSAP on FB too. xDD I'll get an answer somehow~

The classes in illustration are typically three hours... for things like life-drawing or painting.
Lecture classes sometimes run the full three hours depending on the teacher... sometimes the lecture is shorter and you can either stay and work for the remaining time or go home.
Some classes involve work periods where the teachers will visit each student in the class one by one and approve/critique roughs for final illustrations due the following week. Some students stay the full 3 hours, others leave to go home and work after speaking to the teacher.

When I was accepted to sheridan I didn't start looking for a place until June rolled around. From what I remember that was early for many of the landlords renting rooms.

You'll have plenty to keep you busy... don't you worry. If that's not enough you'll have drop in life-drawing classes 5 evenings a week and a saturday afternoon pose too.

That sounds cool, is it listed on Places4Students? Unfortunately, I can barely afford anything over 400 dollars/month (LOL), so I'm probably going to have to settle for a basement room 897283947 minutes away from school.

If you can find people, you can easily split the costs of an apartment suite and it may not even hit 400 dollars per month. I managed to get a place with a few fellow animators and only one person had to pay over 400 dollars per month (for the master bedroom), and it was 10 minute walk from school too!

So you're suggesting to look for a place that's like $1200/month and split the costs or something? I don't know anyone going to the school, I guess I'll have to try in my second year. Thanks for the reply!

Fundies started out pretty crowded... especially in the life-drawing studio. Maybe there was just over thirty people in there in September. That number quickly decreased by a lot toward the end of first semester. Then in second semester there might be 15 people per class based on the number of drops and the number of people who just didn't show up.

It was rare when I got in for someone to get in straight from high school.. but I'm not sure what things are like now. I remember my teachers saying there was some really strong work this year..
Workload is pretty intense.. even though it's like 21 hours of class per week.. if you don't HAVE to have a job - don't.
Until 3rd year, it's pretty much all art. I'm quite sure you can view the curriculum on Sheridan's website.
Supplies needed vary depending on the instructor and the course.. going through fundies gets you set up with a kit that becomes quite useful with some items and totally useless with others - you obviously will not have since you're coming straight out of high school.
Last year they included the CS4 in our tuition which is awesome to not have to stress about.
In your first two years, spend the extra money and get your hands on as many different materials as possible; experiment with traditional and non-traditional media. You just never know what you'll fall in love with.. if you don't try, you'll never know. I'm speaking from experience here!
Have a great summer!

The Clarkson GO station is in Mississauga and you can take that to Oakville GO and then take a bus or walk up Trafalgar to the campus.
The other option that I know of in Mississauga is the 24 South Common Mall bus to Sheridan. I took that in my first year. It was brutal and I didn't enjoy it at all, though.

Are the apartments you're talking about the ones directly across the street? I'm living in those now but have to break my lease early and the only way out is to find someone else who wants a place to stay and refer them to the landlord.
So if you haven't signed your paperwork yet would you be willing to do me a favour? The lease would start in August so you would have a month to get settled. Our apartment is one of the better ones in the building, in that it has a working dishwasher and additional shelving that most of the others don't have.
If anyone is thinking of moving into 1297 anyway I would be indebted to you if you'd take my place off my hands :asskisser:

Apart from all the jibber jabber. I'm glad to say my housing situation is settled. I'm starting first year in Visual and Creative Arts in the fall. My expectation is to transfer to Illustration the following year.
I don't know if I'm crazy but I really would like to know if Illustration students have managed to arrange an internship or study aboard internationally at Sheridan. The program webpage says they do anyway.
It's been a goal of mine to work or study in Europe or United States. The schools I had in mind were Parsons NYC, University of the Arts London and Parsons Paris. They accept int'l students from Canadian institutions like ACAD, NSCAD, OCAD University, etc
I don't know anyone from Sheridan who has done this. I wanna know if anybody has tried or ever thought of trying?
Studying in a foreign country for a short-term seemed like an excellent way to earn credits towards a degree, get international contacts and integrate with their society. I know a lot of students who would take an MA degree aboard. I might do that too! But first... feedback ^^;

Plenty of Illustration students go out of Canada for their co op all the time. I know quite a few people that have done so including my boyfriend who moved to New York for a summer to do his co op at Nickelodeon Magazine before they folded the following year. The best advice I can give you is that if you want a good co op then don't just rely on the co op office. Do research and contact companies on your own that you would like to work for starting around October in your third year. My boyfriend started contacting Nickelodeon around then and was asked to go to their office in New York over the Christmas break. If he had waited till February like most students seem to do then he would have had no chance securing his internship with them. The only thing he relied on the co op office for was help getting the papers he needed to be able to cross the border to go intern in the states for a summer. Some students didn't bother with the papers though and just said they were going on vacation. So some made it through fine and others had to turn around and were sent home to try again another day.
Alishka: Hey, do any second/third/fourth year animation students know how many electives students have to take?
They have to take one breadth course elective every semester and then two in their last semester. So that's 9 total. Same goes for the Illustration program.

Haven't posted here in a while... just wanted to pop in to say I got into the Illustration program! I was going to take Art Fundamentals, but got a call about a month ago saying I got a spot :) Can't wait to meet you all in September!
I also got a nice little apartment in Oakville with my boyfriend. Moving in less than a month :)

The only thing he relied on the co op office for was help getting the papers he needed to be able to cross the border to go intern in the states for a summer. Some students didn't bother with the papers though and just said they were going on vacation. So some made it through fine and others had to turn around and were sent home to try again another day.
Whoa i'm going into third year illustration and want to go to the states to intern... Thanks alot for this!

I know there was some kind of out of the country co op scholarship he ended up getting for the summer too. Really helped out with rent (It was amazing for us to go live in New York for the summer but it was SO EXPENSIVE!) I'm not sure if they still offer it, but you should talk to the co op office about it. I believe he had to write an essay for it but it wasn't anything too difficult.

Sigh, it's that time again.
My friend and I been looking endlessly for good places to stay in since the beginning of summer. All the apartments anywhere near Sheridan has been full since June (which is weird since my roommate found the place on August last year) and the signs show they're not opening spots. Places4Students renters has been slow in replying as well.
Does anybody have any room left for my friend and I? PM me if you do or if you know of somewhere which does. We're both going into second year animation.
Thank you.

Question for the illustration folks, is that orientation thing important? Cuz i'm likely to not being in town yet.
Also, i'm not familiar with this scholastic system so do we have to pick courses or do they make your schedule for you?

Grats on the room find! Orientation isn't really that important, I wouldn't worry about missing it. When you're in first and second year, all your courses will be predetermined, so you don' have to worry about it yet. In third and fourth year, you will pick your general electives from a small group of courses that fit the rest of your predetermined schedule.

From what I heard from classmates thats an annoying uphill battle, but some people did get some of their electives counted. If you already went through a Bachelor degree program they pretty much accept them, but if not they get pickier.

Hey! Thanks a lot for the insight. I know it'll be a long while till 3rd~4th year but I'll definetly keep it in mind. I'm so excited to travel aborad. ^^;

Yeah you will, most classes start and end early, so a back to back class would give you 5-10 minutes to actually find your way around.
And actually looking at your schedule you dont have any conflicts, since the back to back classes are in the same room (and com&rhetoric gives you ample time to go from classroom to lab)

Doug Donald is the man; he will make all your wildest dreams come true. Best teacher I've ever had, hands down.
Stan is also the best life drawing teacher you can get in Illustration, take advantage of this!!! If you want extra in-depth critiques, just ask if he can look over your life drawings at the end of the class, after everyone has left. Not only will it be tremendously helpful because he gives excellent feedback, he truly appreciates it when students take initiative and show interest in art. If you are female, however, he may make passes at you in a harmless, old man sort of way.
Also, Claire won't really be your teacher, she will come in a few times to do lectures during Julia's class, Conceptual Process.
With pretty much all of the teachers, what you give is what you get. If you work hard, have your work done at the appropriate deadlines and contribute to discussions/critiques, you will find most of them to be wonderful instructors.
If you show up late all the time, make excuses, and are super lazy, and have a big ego, don't be surprised if your experiences are less than pleasant. You reap what you sow!
Hope everybody is super excited for the upcoming year! : )

@Alishka: You're under weekly view, click the other checklist to see it under the other view not sure what its called but it'll tell you your lab teachers as well as your group of teachers for lectures, i think you have the same schedule as one of my friends xD We'll probably be in the same lectures for mon and tuesday, possibly.
@varroa:i remember reading somewhere(probably this thread) that someone got called in for an open spot the first week of school while being on the waitlist, so your best bet is to probably wait for a call at this point since they'e already made the decision to put you onto the waitlist.
Are you hoping to see the directors of animation to see if they can move you out of the waitlist and onto the enrollment list? I don't know how well thats going to work...did you apply for illustration or fundies?? If you did you could always take those until you a)get a call or b) just do illust/fundies for a year and get in next year, if you went in with high portfolio scores you should be able to get in next year as well.
I know it sucks you didn't get in due to late payment but...thats just the way school work x_x

There are computers available in most classrooms, it is not expected of you to have your own. You have access to all the machines and programs you will need (and much more powerful than you can likely afford).

I have missed the Arts Fundamentals deadline for Fall entry and I know that Sheridan offers a Continuing Education Certificate in Fine Arts with the courses outlined here:
http://sculptor.sheridanc.on.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/InterestItemDisplayView?storeId=10051&catalogId=10051&progId=116
Do you know if there is any overlap between the two programs? Would I be learning pretty much the same things?

About the CS5 suite, can we install it on more than one computer legally?
And I mean 2 of my computers, I have a desktop and a tabletpc.
On a related note...do we have to use Photoshop absolutely all the time? I'm more of a painter guy.

I'm pretty sure they give you a choice or something.. Joe Morse (?) during the open house was showcasing artworks by students. One of the students apparently PAINTED most of his projects, and Joe said how he tried to get the student to experiment with photoshop and "this is one of the results" as he showed it. So I'm sure PS and Illustrator will be taught but not necessarily required. I wonder if we'll be using some InDesign and Flash, I didn't install them yet. Already drew some stuff and now I'm playing around with photoshop's content aware fill right now, fun stuff!

There are no restrictions on how many machines you can install it in, at least nothing to prevent you from doing it, no clue if the EULA says otherwise.
No one will make you use Photoshop or painter or any other medium else for projects, outside of mandatory ones in media, painting or computer classes which might specify program/medium for a project.

The orientation at the gym was crazily uncomfortable, sitting on the bleachers, but Joe's info was more interesting (although the chairs were really high).. Sorry, complaining about seating. I'll be officially moved in with my keys and everything on Monday, SO EXCITED for school on Tues! By the way to those who don't check their schedules often, mine changed like 3 times since last week, so be sure to check it the day of your first classes just to make sure everything is correct. Also, is anyone picking up their OSAP next week?

That orientation was interesting. I got a free gift called for the book store for jokingly complaining about having the projector's fan blowing heat on me where they said it was suppose to be cooler.
The art kit was much bigger (and heavier) than I expected.

Trying to refresh my memory.
I remember a tall asian guy answering some question (?), a girl in a blue dress with glasses, a girl with a cake on her shirt, some girl with red shoes.. I overheard a girl saying she owned one an Apple monitor.. There was one girl with light blue Converses, and another girl who had black/grey/white Converses that matched with her socks? I think all the asian guys wore glasses that were there. ANYONE?
Laura, did you at one point sit beside.. a pale redhead girl on your left and a guy to your right.. in the life drawing room? Glasses? I don't recall a purple dress.
Edit: I feel like I'm posting too much.. I'm the type that Joe mentioned, one who pretty much LIVES in a computer or something, haha..

awww man! there was a meet up?
I feel completely gutted! I wish I visited the forums more often to figure it out. I spent my orientation standing in lines and wandering around the place looking for my friends. I had no such luck; I happen to know someone who works in Campus Security but that's hardly a kick to my semester. I wanted to make more friends with illustration students.
I signed up for a photography club but I'm wondering why there aren't any pc/video gaming club's? I remember when I was in fundies 3 years ago, there used to be a bunch of us in the pitt after 6 o'clock playing Gamecube or Nintendo DS.
We had massive Mario Kart, Super Smash Bros tournaments! The rules were simple, show up and play.
None of this is will be going down this year? How boring!
and the Illustration club is only open to 4th years? I'm going to be very frank. I was tremendously underwhelmed.
So underwhelmed I felt rebllious enough to pick up that pen then sign my name under the "form a new club" option. Why I didn't do that is another mystery.
amarryth
September 19th, 2010, 07:45 AM
The Illustration Club thing is not actually supposed to be up there. Because we have to fund raise for the Grad Show, we had to be an official "club", they were not supposed to put that posting up, nor the one for Council. Sorry we look so snobby... it's really not the case!
If you are interested in getting to know more illustrators, there are a few 3rd years running Sheridan Self-Publishers, I know I saw a sign up in the pit. It's been around for a couple years now and I know the girls that are running it are great.

Well I am currently in my first year of illustration. I barely got in last year but I did. Looking around at my classmates work...we are all a simliar level. I haven't seen anyone that has blown me away with thier work yet. Peaking at your artwork..and comparing it to others in my first year..I think you'll have a chance.
Also..ever single person seemed like they wanted to be a concept artist. I thought I did too...then the head prof of illustration said "Everyone wants to be a concept artist, but the truth is, every video game company only needs less than 5" It crushed my dreams alittle because as much as I love video games and art together, it would be extremely hard for me to get a job. So I'm more open now.
I think as future people make portfolios for this program, don't be set on one thing you want to do yet. The way the program has worked so far for me, it lets me know what my boundries are, and where I can cross them to improve.
Hope this helps!
:)

The caliber of work that you produce depends more on you than anyone else. The tools are without a doubt provided here... whether you choose to take them for all they're worth is completely your choice. I don't know of anyone that has had to go to another school after this program to become an illustrator.

I used a 11 x 14 portfolio.
-mainly because the first part is only 8.5x11 but the second part can be any size. So I had larger drawings/paintings that I scaled down to 11x14.
I used a labeler to have my student number and name on each drawing.
